Exploratory Study Of A School-Based Refugee Mental Health Project, Anne Marie Boose Dec 2018

Exploratory Study Of A School-Based Refugee Mental Health Project, Anne Marie Boose

Student Work

Immigrant and refugee youth are in our schools in greater numbers than ever. Educators are required to educate all students to the same standards, even though they have often been exposed to violence and other difficulties throughout their journey to a new home. Many continue to face many on-going barriers as they arrive in our schools. Although this population is resilient and has many strengths, for some the burden of trauma is overwhelming, threatening their mental health and school performance. A small percentage of these students are unable to cope and make devastating, life-ending decisions. Schools with large numbers of …

Teacher Perceptions Of Quality Student-Teacher Relationships, Cecilia Wilken Nov 2018

Teacher Perceptions Of Quality Student-Teacher Relationships, Cecilia Wilken

Student Work

Student-teacher relationships are a critical component of the classroom environment, and are unique for each relationship that exists between a teacher and the students in a class. Within a relationship, different amounts of closeness, dependency, and conflict influence the significance a student-teacher relationship can have on student success. Likewise, mobile students experience school in a different way than a nonmobile student does as they miss the intentional, classwide opportunities to interact and build a quality student-teacher relationship. Since mobile students experience school differently, schools need to respond to the mobile populations’ needs differently. This study explored how teacher’s perception of …

Preparing New Teachers To Engage Families In Early Childhood: Strengths And Areas Of Growth In The Development Of Early Childhood, Preservice Teachers, Jackie Proctor

Student Work

The research is clear that parents and families are an essential component to the education of the whole child. Since this is so well-documented, it is essential for educator preparation programs to have coursework and experiences focused on this critical aspect of education. New teachers must leave educator preparation programs with the skills necessary to engage families. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explain the extent to which new teachers feel prepared to engage families in an early childhood setting. Therefore, this study explored the strengths and areas of growth in each teacher’s educator preparation program in …

Nebraska Educator Perceptions On The Quality Of Instructional Feedback In A Secondary Science Classroom, Megan Myers May 2018

Nebraska Educator Perceptions On The Quality Of Instructional Feedback In A Secondary Science Classroom, Megan Myers

Student Work

The practice of providing feedback to teachers through the process of teacher evaluation is designed to improve the quality of instruction at the classroom level. However, there is a dearth of literature concerning how instructional leaders can best support teachers, and what types of feedback are beneficial to improvement. Secondary science education presents a unique challenge to instructional leaders as it is rare to have content experts represented at the administrator level. Few supports exist for administrators who are not science content experts, consequently lending little assistance to the science specialists in the classroom, aside from available outside workshops and …

An Exploration Of Teacher Perceptions Of Mental Health Indicators Within The Construct Of School Connectedness, Stephanie Jean Drodge

Family Engagement: Finding Parents’ Perspectives, Melissa Frans Mar 2018

Family Engagement: Finding Parents’ Perspectives, Melissa Frans

Student Work

The purpose of this classic grounded theory study is to define family engagement in a child’s education from the perspective of a mother. This study will bring to the surface what parents believe their role is in their children's education and develop an understanding of the gap between what research says that parents should do at home and what parents believe they should be doing at home. At this stage in the research, family engagement is a recommended focus for schools, and Steven Constantino (2016) goes as far to say that schools should establish a relationship with every family. This …

A Phenomenological Approach: Perceptions Of Teacher Evaluation And Future Implications Of Practice, Elizabeth Tonniges

Student Work

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the teacher evaluation process, teacher’s attitudes and beliefs about teacher evaluation processes/systems, and how those impacted the effectiveness of the intended outcome of teacher improvement, resulting in greater student achievement. The Learning Policy Institute’s research cited a decline in the number of teachers exiting higher education institutions from 691,000 in 2009 to 451,000 in 2014 (Sutcher, Darling-Hammond, & Carver-Thomas, 2016). Couple a decline in the number of teachers exiting college with almost an 8% reduction in workforce, and an anticipated future enrollment of students leaves many worried that a crisis is …

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate leadership styles of educational leaders in the state of Nebraska. The research described herein has built upon past research and examined traditional gender roles in educational leadership. Male and female educators, in their respective roles, have shaped and facilitated a school model designed to uphold traditional social roles within the existing contemporary society (Engel, 2015; Goldstein, 2014; Koenig & Eagly, 2014). Educational leadership style norms were established in the mid-1800’s and were founded on traditional gender roles guided by a general set of beliefs about masculine and feminine attributes (Goldstein, 2015).
