Minorities are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, post-secondary STEM education, and show high academic attrition rates. Academic performance and retention improve when culturally relevant support is provided. The interface of Western science and Indigenous science provides an opportunity for bridging this divide. We hypothesized that there would be regional (U.S.A. vs. Canada) differences amongst post-secondary students regarding these variables: perceptions of traditional Elders as STEM co-educators; interest in STEM; and self-identity as a scientist. We conducted a short-term longitudinal pilot study of an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional, and cross-cultural STEM course in the spring of 2013. This …

Global Trends In Higher Education Policies, Kathryn Moyle
Teacher education
This paper outlines the current global context for higher education in 2015, as a basis for examining the key trends in teacher education in the first decades of the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to outline the current global contexts for higher education, and to provide an overview of the policies found in teacher education in those countries that consistently produce students who perform highly on international standardized tests such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS. Hospitality Education Assessment: A Case Study On The Learning Experience Of Chinese Students In A 4-Year Program At A U.S. Institution, Rossy Ambe-Cohen
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the learning experience of Chinese hospitality students in a 4-year program at a U.S. institution in order to bridge the gap between Chinese and American education. This study could challenge traditional education and produce more culturally savvy and diverse graduates, in a field as personal and interactive as Hospitality Management, it could also help American students who want to study, work or teach in China, as they would be knowledgeable of the cultural and educational differences. This study used a qualitative approach. The researcher conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with Chinese hospitality students …

They Just Named Me Head Of Retention: Now What Do I Do?, Anne Marie Casey, Richard Nicols

Retention specialists come from many areas of higher education. Some, such as a First Year Programs Director, seem like a very natural fit. Others come from departments not traditionally associated with retention. At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which offers degree programs primarily in STEM fields, the Director of First Year Programs (FYP) had been considered the informal retention specialist of record until late 2013 when the Library Director was recruited to take on the newly created position of Dean of Retention and Student Success. This paper chronicles the ways in which the two colleagues learned about the state of retention at …

Exploring How Transformational Experiences Of Faculty Participating In Global Learning Workshops Inform Practice, Eduardo Hernandez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This case study addresses gaps in the global learning, transformational learning, and professional development literature. Research is lacking on the questions of if and how university faculty members view global learning curricula as transformational learning as a result of professional development and how this transformational learning applies to their teaching of global learning curricula. This study’s purpose is to explore whether university faculty members who have attended global learning professional development workshops perceive global learning as transformational learning and if they do, how they see global learning as transformational, and how this transformational learning informs their teaching.
Research questions were …
