Developing On-Line Tools To Support Learners In Problem-Solving Activities, Gwyn Brickell, B. Harper, Brian Ferry Dec 2002

Developing On-Line Tools To Support Learners In Problem-Solving Activities, Gwyn Brickell, B. Harper, Brian Ferry

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

In recent years, research has focused on understanding how learners can benefit from tools that can assist in the development of informal reasoning skills when constructing arguments in collaborative learning with web-based learning environments. A common approach taken by each of these systems is to use support mechanisms (scaffolding) to facilitate student learning through the development of improved reasoning and argumentation skills. The authors of this paper have been developing computer-based learning environments for the past ten years, and have developed several award winning CD-ROM packages that feature a range of cognitive tools designed to assist learning. The development of …

Implementing Generic Learning Designs Based Upon Quality Ict Exemplars, J. Hedberg, R. Oliver, Barry Harper, Sandra Wills, S. Agostinho

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Within the context of an AUTC funded Project: Information and Communication Technologies and Their Role in Flexible Learning, this paper presents an analysis of learning designs using ICTs and how this grounded approach might be a more useful structure to design effective learning environments. The project has developed generic or reusable frameworks for technology-enhanced high quality learning experiences in higher education and this paper will present several examples, of the original design and how the key elements were selected and developed for use by others. As this project is currently developing these generic exemplars of learning designs, the final presentation …

Using On-Line Discussion To Develop Preservice Teacher Understanding Of Classroom Management, Brian Ferry, J. Kiggins, G. Hoban Dec 2002

Using On-Line Discussion To Develop Preservice Teacher Understanding Of Classroom Management, Brian Ferry, J. Kiggins, G. Hoban

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

This paper describes how a knowledge building community (KBC) of preservice teachers used an on-line discussion forum to develop knowledge about the role of the teacher in modern schools. It traces their initial use of the technology and follows the evolution of its use over a three-year period describing the role of the students and university lecturers in facilitating discussion. The paper then focuses on how members of the KBC used an on-line discussion forum to reflect on and share learning experiences as they developed classroom management strategies.

Family Business Research: The Evolution Of An Academic Field, Barbara Bird, Harold Welsch, Joseph H. Astrachan, David Pistrui Dec 2002

Family Business Research: The Evolution Of An Academic Field, Barbara Bird, Harold Welsch, Joseph H. Astrachan, David Pistrui

Faculty and Research Publications

The establishment of a field of study or a discipline with academic or professional standing requires, among other things, a body of knowledge that expands understanding of that domain. This paper looks at the literature on establishing a unique field of study, reviews the foundational research in family business (1980s) and four recent years (1997-2001) of published family business research found in several outlets. We find that family business research is becoming increasingly sophisticated and rigorous. This bodes well for the development of an independent field for family business. Recommendations are offered to further the professionalization of family business as …

Using A Computer Simulation To Teach Science Process Skills To College Biology And Elementary Majors, Aimée T. Lee, Rosalina V. Hairston, Rachel Thames, Tonya Lawrence, Sherry S. Herron Dec 2002

Using A Computer Simulation To Teach Science Process Skills To College Biology And Elementary Majors, Aimée T. Lee, Rosalina V. Hairston, Rachel Thames, Tonya Lawrence, Sherry S. Herron

Faculty Publications

The Lateblight computer simulation (Arneson and Ticknor, 1990) has been implemented in the general biology laboratory and the science methods course for elementary teachers to reinforce the processes of science and to allow the students to engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate the methods of building concepts in science. The students develop testable hypotheses and then use the program to run experiments and collect data. In addition, they research relevant background information and subsequently present their results in a poster during class.

The Estimation Of Polytomous Item Response Models With Many Dimensions, Nikolai Volodin, Ray J. Adams Dec 2002

The Estimation Of Polytomous Item Response Models With Many Dimensions, Nikolai Volodin, Ray J. Adams

Assessment and Reporting

Identification conditions and an improved estimation method for a D-dimensional mixed coefficients multinomial logit model are discussed. This model is a generalisation of the Adams and Wilson (1997) random coefficients multinomial logit and it can be used to fit multdimensional forms of a wide range of Rasch measurement models. The computational demands of the numerical integration required in fitting such models have limited previous implementations to three and perhaps four-dimensional problems (Glas, 1992; Adams, Wilson and Wang, 1997). This paper illustrates a Monte Carlo integration method that permits the estimation of models with much higher dimensionality. The example in …

Using Culturally And Linguistically Appropriate Assessments To Ensure That American Indian And Alaska Native Students Recieve The Special Education Programs And Services They Need, John W. Tippeconnic Iii, Susan C. Faircloth Dec 2002

Using Culturally And Linguistically Appropriate Assessments To Ensure That American Indian And Alaska Native Students Recieve The Special Education Programs And Services They Need, John W. Tippeconnic Iii, Susan C. Faircloth

Disabilities

The American Indian and Alaska Native Education Research Agenda (Research Agenda Working Group, Strang & von Glatz, 2001) represents the most recent formal call for research leading to improved assessments for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students with special learning needs. Similar calls were recorded at hearings and published in commissioned papers in the early 1990s (Cahape, 1993; Johnson, 1991). The disproportionate number of AI/AN students receiving special education services and identified as limited English proficient (LEP) indicates an ongoing need for the research. This Digest briefly reviews the legislation and literature pertaining to the influence of language and …

The Presence Of Contact Conditions In A Magnet School, Nicola Blacklaw Dec 2002

The Presence Of Contact Conditions In A Magnet School, Nicola Blacklaw

Papers and Publications

Following the Sheff v. O’Neill school desegregation case in Hartford, Connecticut, the state increased funding for interdistrict magnet schools to reduce the racial, ethnic and economic barriers preventing students living in Hartford from equal educational outcomes compared to their suburban peers. This observational study focuses on the Montessori Magnet School in Hartford, exploring whether a magnet school environment, coupled with the Montessori philosophy of educating, is an effective ways to foster positive inter-racial attitudes, behaviors, and contact conditions.

Course Content Of Sociology Of Aging And Social Gerontology Syllabi: Interdisciplinary Relations, Paula Newby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The United States is undergoing a major increase in a segment of the population we socially define and understand as aged. By the year 2030 approximately one in every five Americans will be 65 years or older. Because the concept of age is encompassed in our everyday world of social reality, it is a subject matter for the discipline of sociology. Aging is also recognized as a subject matter for courses in social gerontology, which incorporates a multidisciplinary approach with material from social, psychological, and biological areas. This research endeavor constitutes a content analysis of course syllabi found in the …

Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman Nov 2002

Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Addressing homophobia and heterosexism as a teacher raises issues of respect for the intellectual freedom of your students. The central thesis of this article is that these issues are best addressed on the basis of general principles of academic freedom-that is, intellectual freedom in educational and research contexts. Three cases are analyzed on the basis of principles developed by the Academic Freedom Coalition of Nebraska (AFCON). These principles permit advocacy, rather than requiring neutrality, but do not permit indoctrination. That is, instructors may express and justify their own ideas relevant to the curriculum and try to convince students to adopt …
