U.S. Undergraduate Test-Optional Policies For International Applicants During The Covid Pandemic: An Exploration Of Admissions Webpages, Sugene Cho-Baker, Guangming Ling, José Sotelo, Olasumbo Oluwalana

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Although the adoption of test-optional policies (TOPs) has risen, there is little research documenting the types of TOPs (e.g., test-blind, test-optional) utilized across higher educational institutions, particularly for international applicants, who have been traditionally required to submit additional application components (e.g., proof of English language proficiency [ELP]). Using the content of undergraduate admissions webpages from 518 U.S. 4-year universities, the current study examined how standardized test policies are implemented in admissions for international applicants. We found that only 2.5% of the institutions explicitly required ACT/SAT scores, whereas 43.1% stated ACT/SAT scores as optional requirements for admissions. Some institutions provided unclear …

Check The Rhyme Y’All; Life As A Shorty Shouldn’T Be So Rough: How Hip-Hop Songs Can Be Used As Pedagogical Tools To Teach Grammar/Culture And Ease Comprehension In A French As A Second Language Classroom, Scooter Pégram

Perspectives In Learning

Language learning can be stressful endeavour for students. To address this, educators of foreign languages often search for new and exciting pedagogical tools that will enable them to reach their learners in meaningful ways. Since both hip-hop music and culture are omnipresent throughout contemporary society in many facets, some teachers are incorporating elements of this ever-expanding and integral part of global pop culture into their lesson plans. This study explores the unique educational approach that is known as a Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE); one where rap music and lyrics can be integrated into classroom instruction and learning. After first introducing …

Public Service Loan Forgiveness: A Historical Overview And Practical Implications For Higher Education Practitioners, Allison Maldonado, Z.W. Taylor, Patrick Ziegler, Elizabeth A. Rainey, Debra Carter, Dana George, Karla A. Weber-Wandel

Essays in Education

Although student loan forgiveness continues to remain in the headlines within United States higher education contexts, relatively little is known about the origins of the public service loan forgiveness (PSLF) program, federal policy that has shaped the borrowing patterns of public servants for decades. Moreover, as one of the largest student loan forgiveness programs available through the U.S. federal government, higher education practitioners would benefit from a historical overview of the PSLF program to provide context, as well as offer practical implications for practitioners working with student loan borrowers seeking entry to a public field of work. As a result, …

“Oh, That’S Engineering?”: Complicating Black Women Educators’ Understanding Of Engineering Practices In Urban Elementary Schools, Brittany N. Anderson, Ginaya S. Littlejohn

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

In most teacher preparation programs, a focus on standards and curricula with STEM concepts, specifically engineering, are largely missing from the teacher licensure requirements. There have been few opportunities for teacher educators to teach, learn, and reflect on the nuanced complexities of STEM, specifically engineering concepts and practices in urban elementary schools. This university-school- community partnership, led by Black women, focused on the early exploration of STEM with high-ability/ gifted Black girls, caregivers, and their Black women educators. In this qualitative study, Black women teachers were able to disrupt assumptions and stereotypes of STEM, particularly in engineering, and identify challenges …

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

The purpose of this paper is to describe teacher outcomes from participating in an intensive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professional learning (PL) initiative for middle school science teachers in the United States. The initiative included intensive summer coursework and ongoing support (e.g., individual coaching, professional learning communities), and focused on enhancing teachers’ STEM instruction and their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), with the ultimate goal of improving student outcomes.

In this mixed method study, we examine change across time in teachers’ beliefs, use of STEM instruction, and PCK. In general, we did not observe statistically significant change in teachers’ …

Advocating For Data Access, Nathan D. Grawe Jul 2024

Advocating For Data Access, Nathan D. Grawe

Numeracy

Participants in the numeracy movement have long recognized that an understanding of the social construction of quantitative evidence holds a place in the center of critical thinking about quantitative reasoning. Often, social construction manifests itself in choices about what should be counted and how. But an equally important choice is what data should be made available and to whom. As the movement matures, numeracy advocates must take their place alongside librarians in lobbying for broad access to basic data related to public policy.

Quantitative Reasoning: What’S Math Got To Do With It?, Pamela Burdman

Numeracy

This keynote address explores the history and role of college math requirements with a focus on ensuring math courses serve to expand students’ horizons, rather than serve as gatekeepers. It discusses the advent of general education math courses, which brought more students into math departments, which ultimately contributed to broadening the scope of the courses to align with more students’ interests and majors, since their purpose was to advance quantitative reasoning, not mathematics skill per se. It also examines several practices to address calculus’ gatekeeping role: revising placement practices and prerequisites, redesigning courses, and updating instruction and assessment practices. Lastly, …

Sitting With The Data: Experimenting With Meditative Thematic Analysis, Steve Haberlin Jul 2024

Sitting With The Data: Experimenting With Meditative Thematic Analysis, Steve Haberlin

The Qualitative Report

While qualitative researchers have turned to non-traditional forms and methods to collect and analyze data, including contemplative and mindfulness approaches to inquiry relatively little has been written in the professional literature about how to specifically use meditation techniques as a qualitative data analysis method. In this article, I describe how I engaged in meditation and used mindfulness to code data and derive thematic patterns during the completion of my dissertation at the University of South Florida. I explore the notion of practicing meditation to foster a creative silence, which may encourage insights and thematic findings to emerge more spontaneously.

Future Library: Hopepunk Heroism, Joanna Pascoe

Heroism Science

Future Library (Paterson, 2014-2114) is viewed through the lens of the heroic imagination and heroism in community. The heroic vision includes an artist, writers, a forest, public architecture, and the city of Oslo. As the project grows, so does its community, across the world, encouraging transformative thinking for all. Future Library is an art installation created by Katie Paterson, described thus: “A forest in Norway is growing. In 100 years it will become an anthology of books. Every year a writer is contributing a text that will be held in trust, unpublished, until the year 2114. The texts will be …

Sociocultural Environment And Agency In Identity Construction Of English Language Teachers, Bharat Prasad Neupane , Phd Jul 2024

Sociocultural Environment And Agency In Identity Construction Of English Language Teachers, Bharat Prasad Neupane , Phd

The Qualitative Report

Identity is an emerging field in educational research focusing on how teacher education programs, training, reflective practices, and short-term interventions impact the identity negotiation of teachers (Gautam, 2018). However, this study reports how different levels of sociocultural environments influence teachers and what initiatives they take for professional development and identity construction. Drawing on Wenger’s (1998) notion of communities of practice and Norton’s (2013) investing, this study sought to uncover the interchange of the development of learning communities and teachers by investigating the life history of four secondary-level English language teachers derived through informal conversations and in-depth interviews. Teachers’ life stories …

Creating Neurodiverse Affirming Spaces In Online Learning Environments, Kailey Bradley

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Neurodiversity is a paradigm that opposes the view that there is one normal view of neuro-cognitive functioning (Singer, 1991; Silberman, 2015). However, implementation of affirming practices for neurodiverse learners in online environments have been limited. As a result of the COVID 19 pandemic there has been increased urgency to provide accessible learning environments in online learning spaces. Within this manuscript, the concept of neurodiversity will be defined with particular attention to barriers and practical suggestions for neurodiverse learners in online learning environments.

Three Experiential Learning Activities For The Online Environment, Brian Mesimer, Jenny Chien, Stanley Hoover Jul 2024

Three Experiential Learning Activities For The Online Environment, Brian Mesimer, Jenny Chien, Stanley Hoover

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Research indicates that counselor education requires experiential instruction to properly facilitate student engagement (Merlin-Knoblich et al., 2020) Specifically, flipped format classes tend to encourage more student engagement than traditional lecture and online asynchronous courses (Merlin-Knoblich et al., 2020). Such activities should be both varied in nature and include proper exposition and context (Young, 2022). Online programs continue to grow in popularity (Snow et al., 2018). However, transitioning on-ground content online can prove daunting for counselor educators and research on online counselor education teaching strategies is insufficient (Dotson-Blake & Glass, 2016; Hale & Bridges, 2021; Li & Wu, 2021). This paper …

Utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence In The Online Counselor Education Classroom, Jill Brue, Jacob Brue Jul 2024

Utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence In The Online Counselor Education Classroom, Jill Brue, Jacob Brue

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created a buzz in education, particularly with fears that students will plagiarize information and their work will not be representative of their own capabilities. Programs such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot are becoming increasingly popular sources for content generation and virtual assistance. Colleges and universities have scrambled to develop policies around the use of generative AI programs for student work. The reality is that generative AI tools will continue to develop, and educators have choices to make about embracing the potential use for this technology or avoiding it altogether. Counselor educators can …

Good Mourning: Existing With Loss While Living In The Anxious Now, Jeff Horwat, Geralyn Yu, Vicky J. Grube

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Abstract:

Absence and loss are part of what it means to be alive. While common, grief is a difficult and complex aspect of the human psyche, often producing affects that mask themselves in different forms such as anxiety, anger, despair, and isolation. Able to bring into form the unnamable affects of our psychic lives (Irwin & Springgay, 2008), arts-based research methods can be viable means to transform the grief into something generative. In this paper, each author describes a project that uses a different arts-based research approach to explore a personal experience with grief. Drawing from wordless narrative research (Author …

An Investigation Of Preservice Teachers’ Engagement In Reading A Novel In Verse, Rebecca Stortz, Janis Harmon, Miriam Martinez, Rashanna Tice, Marcy Wilburn

Literacy Practice and Research

This qualitative investigation focused on preservice teachers’ experiences reading a novel in verse. Initially few participants had read novels in verse and some were hesitant due to previous negative experiences reading poetry. Participants identified a variety of challenges, including the lack of narration, the need to make connections across the short verses, and the need to adjust reading pace. Some participants met the challenges by conducting rereadings and adjusting their pace. As participants moved through the story world, their written responses reflected engagement with the characters and their experiences. They also identified text features supporting this engagement, such as the …

A Study Of Teacher Candidates’ Changing Perceptions Of Confidence Within Writing-Focused Methods Courses, Kelly N. Tracy, Roya Q. Scales, Joy Myers, David Scales, Sonia M. Kline, Amanda Wall, Chinwe Ikpeze, Jenn Raskauskas, Vicki Mcquitty, Grace Y. Kang, Linda D. Smetana

Literacy Practice and Research

This convergent mixed methods study explores changes in teacher candidates’ perceptions of confidence in themselves as writers and writing teachers after completing a writing-focused methods course. Quantitative results indicate that 80% of candidates felt confident or extremely confident as a writer, and most participants (nearly 79%) grew in their confidence to teach writing by the end of their methods course. Qualitative data indicate that candidates’ writing skills influenced how they perceived themselves as writers and that definitions of writing and being a writer vary. The results provide areas of consideration for improving writing pedagogy in teacher preparation and beyond.

Appropriations Of Practice In The Early Years Of Teaching, Samuel Dejulio

Literacy Practice and Research

This study investigates the influence of teacher education programs on teachers’ first years of literacy teaching by following nine graduates of a university-based teacher education program through their first three years of professional teaching. Findings from this longitudinal study highlight the ways the influence of the preparation program can be evident across the beginning years of literacy teaching, but the degree to which beginning teachers are able to appropriate these practices can be influenced by the tensions faced in their particular contexts. The study offers insight into ways to prepare preservice teachers for the initial years of literacy teaching.
