Purpose: Becoming and being a nurse is vaguely conceptualized, so it is important for nurses to understand the defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, model cases, and empirical referents of professional identity with the aim of better understanding the process of its formation.
Method: Walker and Avant’s (2005) method is used to guide this concept analysis of professional identity.
Findings: The analysis indicated that formation of professional identity in nursing consists of three main themes: individual characteristics, becoming a nurse, and professional identity. This article explores our understanding of the concept in relation to the current literature, and a research study conducted …

Accelerated baccalaureate nursing programs have proliferated to meet the demands of the current and projected nursing shortage. While these programs serve an important function, accelerated nursing students face unique challenges related to fast pacing, content-heavy courses, and swift transition into complex clinical learning environments. These challenges, coupled with the realities of a strained nursing educator workforce, are potential threats to learning environments that are supportive of students’ academic tenacity and social belonging. While a clear link between nursing students’ positive sense of belonging and their success in clinical learning environments has been established, there is scant research looking at the …

Pharmacogenetic testing is used to tailor medication recommendations based on an individual's genetic makeup. Increased precision in prescribing medication through the use of genetics leads to a reduction in adverse drug reactions resulting in decreased morbidity and mortality. Due to the noted benefits to patient health outcomes and reduction in healthcare costs, a growing number of Canadian health centers and community pharmacies are beginning to offer pharmacogenetic testing. Previous studies indicate that Canadian nurses have minimal education in genomics; however, there has been an increase in attention to nursing roles in the implementation of genomic health practices in recent years. …

Nursing students experience academic, practice-related, and personal stressors, all of which can affect their learning, fitness-to-practice, and overall well-being. One way for educators to support students’ well-being is to foster their capacity for, and enactment of, self-care. We used an arts-based assignment that required students to reflect on the stressors they encountered and engage in strategies to relieve their stress and provide self-care. The assignment also provided students with a creative outlet for managing the stressors they faced during their program of study. We designed a web-based survey comprised of Likert scales and three open-ended questions to explore students’ perspectives …

Practice-based, or workplace-integrated, learning is a fundamental component of Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model has been implemented widely in a range of contexts over the past two decades as an alternative to traditional faculty-led and preceptorship models. In Victoria, British Columbia, academic and practice nursing partners adapted and piloted the DEU in 2003 as a Collaborative Learning Unit (CLU) model. As with other DEU initiatives/innovations, the CLU was proposed primarily as a solution to increasing demands on student placement capacity and reduced preceptor availability. Over the past 17 years the CLU approach …
