A Laboratory Excercise In Gas Chromatography For High School Students, Bernard Hermanson Jan 1981

A Laboratory Excercise In Gas Chromatography For High School Students, Bernard Hermanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Gas chromatography is a sophisticated tool for the isolation, identification and quantification of chemical compounds. The purpose of this exercise is to introduce the principles of gas chromatography to first year chemistry students. For the exercise, students inject their own chemical samples, estimate the purity of these samples by counting the number of peaks on a print out, measure retention times for the materials observed, and compare the "r" values to those of known substances.

Six day creation, gap creation, progressive creation, theistic evolution, creationism, evolution, and planetary seeding are terms used to describe some of these views. The contrasts among these ideas, especially between creationism and evolution, have been discussed publicly.

Comparison Of Perceptions Of Major Problems In Science Education, Jack Gerlovich, Robert Yager Jan 1981

Comparison Of Perceptions Of Major Problems In Science Education, Jack Gerlovich, Robert Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Foundation has stimulated much thought, analysis and assessment concerning the discipline of science education. The three status studies of K-12 science education have attracted national attention and study (Helgeson, 1978; Stake & Easley, 1978; Weiss, 1978). Nine professional groups have had committees analyze the results of these studies from the perspective of their respective memberships. The National Science Foundation also awarded another large research grant to the University of Colorado called Project Synthesis. This project, under the direction of Norris Harms, has attempted to synthesize the status study reports and the recent data from the National Assessment …

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis Jan 1981

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science anxiety is a new name for a phenomenon that all science teachers, regardless of experience, are familiar with. Science anxiety is a fear that many bright and capable students have of scientific studies. This fear carries with it a conviction that they cannot, regardless of effort, understand science. Science anxiety is a very effective sieve that keeps many talented people from careers in science. Those science anxious students who enter teaching act as carriers of the anxiety, thereby infecting their students. Finally, science anxious students become members of our community and contribute to the growing climate of antiscience attitudes …

Do Reading Ability And Sex Differences Make A Difference In Science Achievement?, Sharon Wadsworth, Lynn Glass Jan 1981

Do Reading Ability And Sex Differences Make A Difference In Science Achievement?, Sharon Wadsworth, Lynn Glass

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Educators, parents and politicians of late have all been concerned with test scores, especially declining test scores. Much debate has taken place concerning whether, in fact, there has been a decline in the level of student performance or, rather, whether there has been a change in the population of students taking a given test. Many explanations have been tendered concerning reasons for the possible decline in test scores. This study was concerned with science scores from one Iowa high school. Specifically, this study sought to determine if there was a decline in science test scores and to determine what variables …

Potential New Iowa Multi-Use Crops For Oils And Hydrocarbons, Russell A. Buchanan Jan 1981

Potential New Iowa Multi-Use Crops For Oils And Hydrocarbons, Russell A. Buchanan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many green plants contain, on a dry weight basis, more than 5 percent oil plus hydrocarbon that is not concentrated in storage organs. In these plants, oils and hydrocarbons (botanochemicals) are distributed throughout major plant tissues often as the major component of a latex. Although there has been little past interest in processing whole plants for botanochemicals, there is now great interest in these new and renewable sources of raw materials and energy. Various plant species are being regarded as potential "gasoline trees", as possible domestic sources of natural rubber and plastic, as new sources of industrial feedstocks or even …

Quick Crystals, Sil Crespo Jan 1981

Quick Crystals, Sil Crespo

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When teaching about minerals, there is no way that you can omit the topic of crystals. Usually, we either go to our mineral cases and take out examples of crystals to pass around, or we grow our own. The only problem with these methods is that both take time. With the former, we are looking at crystals "after the fact." With the latter, we lost the interest of some students because it takes too long to grow crystals from a solution.

Student Construction Of A Working Solar Collector, Edward Jones, David Roberts Jan 1981

Student Construction Of A Working Solar Collector, Edward Jones, David Roberts

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Student constructed projects may serve as the basis for studies of the advantages and limitations of solar energy. An eighth grade science class at Miami University's McGuffey Laboratory School completed a study of solar energy with the construction of a window unit solar collector. The collector was installed in a south window of the science room in time for use and testing during the winter of 1980. The class activity developed after numerous individual projects allowed students to test variables that would be important in the design, construction and use of such a unit. Students performed a variety of individual …
