The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe Jan 1981

The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Based on the original United States Land Office survey, it has been estimated that 18 percent of the total state land area was once covered by forest. Today, less than 4 percent of the Iowa landscape remains in forest. In essence, Iowa's forest lands have a value underrated and misunderstood by most of its citizens. Threatened with exhaustion of our natural forest heritage, it is imperative that the citizens of this state awaken at last to the necessity of protecting what is left. The appreciation, conservation, restoration and wise management of our remaining forest resource must play a critical role …

Student Construction Of A Working Solar Collector, Edward Jones, David Roberts Jan 1981

Student Construction Of A Working Solar Collector, Edward Jones, David Roberts

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Student constructed projects may serve as the basis for studies of the advantages and limitations of solar energy. An eighth grade science class at Miami University's McGuffey Laboratory School completed a study of solar energy with the construction of a window unit solar collector. The collector was installed in a south window of the science room in time for use and testing during the winter of 1980. The class activity developed after numerous individual projects allowed students to test variables that would be important in the design, construction and use of such a unit. Students performed a variety of individual …

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis Jan 1981

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science anxiety is a new name for a phenomenon that all science teachers, regardless of experience, are familiar with. Science anxiety is a fear that many bright and capable students have of scientific studies. This fear carries with it a conviction that they cannot, regardless of effort, understand science. Science anxiety is a very effective sieve that keeps many talented people from careers in science. Those science anxious students who enter teaching act as carriers of the anxiety, thereby infecting their students. Finally, science anxious students become members of our community and contribute to the growing climate of antiscience attitudes …

A Philosophy For Present-Day Education, James L. Kelly Jan 1981

A Philosophy For Present-Day Education, James L. Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It seems that public education is being attacked more and more concerning the lack of quality education. In part, what is being challenged are the methods of teaching children, governed by an established and practiced philosophy. Many school systems don't operate with a stated philosophy and therefore cannot implement such. Moreover, it would seem unlikely that one could find two teachers, in such a system, who would be teaching with the same philosophical objectives in mind. In short, there is no consistent "practice what you preach" format for teachers to follow in many school systems.

Save Yourself, James Hungerford Jan 1981

Save Yourself, James Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

While arms race political talk is very effective in getting public support for increased military expenditures, such comparisons between Russian and United States educational systems go unheeded by the general public. Science education cannot afford to sit on the sidelines apathetically waiting for another Sputnik to give it a shot in the arm.
