Policies That Enhance Learning And Teaching, Shannon M. Chance, Pamela L. Eddy, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe, Jen Harvey
Pamela L. Eddy
Educational institutions often implement policies with the intention of influencing how learning and teaching occur. Generally, such policies are not as effective as their makers would like; changing the behavior of third-level teachers proves difficult. Nevertheless, a policy instituted in 2006 at the Dublin Institute of Technology has met with success: each newly hired faculty member must have a post-graduate qualification in “Learning and Teaching” or successfully complete one within the first two years of employment. The intention is to build teachers’ knowledge about student-centered pedagogies and their capacity to implement them. As a result of this policy (and associated …
The Utility Of Technacy Genre Theory In Technology Education: A Case Study Into Food Technology Teaching, A Turner
Dr Angela Turner
There are many and varied forces that shape school curriculum, but one that is of specific interest discussed in this paper concerns the perception of Food Technology secondary curriculum in Australia. Maintaining and fostering a coherent and accurate perception throughout the food technology career, from school leaver to professional undergraduate studies, is critical for both the evolution of the field of knowledge and the need to keep up with increasing world demand for food technologists and food innovation. Food Technology is a well-established secondary school elective in curriculum offerings, yet a contradiction has emerged between the ‘school view’ of Food …

Both Universal Design (UD) and Green Building Design (GBD) aim to achieve sustainability in the built environment. In Malaysia, the introduction of Green Building Index (GBI) is a reinforcement of GBD agenda although not made mandatory to comply. At the same time, the Persons With Disabilities Act 2008 Malaysia (PWD Act) promotes strongly UD. Both the GBI and PWD Act are in support of Sustainable Development (SD) in terms of environmental protection and social equity, respectively. This study provides a critical analysis of how these two SD instruments are either being corroborated or compromised or complemented through the practice of …

Patterns Of Seated Activity In Sensory Gardens Among Children Educated In Special Schools, Hazreena Hussein
Hazreena Hussein
This study investigated the seated activity among special schooled children and their adult carers in two sensory gardens in the United Kingdom. Seated activity was established whether the seating was used as intended or whether users preferred to sit on other attributes during their learning session. The objectives of this study are to explore opportunities for users’ activity and their engagement with the attributes, whether activity is possible or if opportunities are not being actualised because of barriers. Observation and behaviour mapping methods were carried out alongside the affordance theory. The outcome suggests that the number of users, the number …

Critical Pedagogy Of A Post-9/11 Muslim Memoir, Esmaeil Zeiny
Critical Pedagogy Of A Post-9/11 Muslim Memoir, Esmaeil Zeiny
Esmaeil Zeiny
Traditional education of literature would do injustice to both students and the discipline in this age of globalization. This is the era when teachers should use critical pedagogy to teach any genre of literature. Nowadays, a great number of memoirs form the Middle East perpetuate Islamophobia; yet some of them are taught at schools in the West. Perpetrating and perpetuating Islamophobia, as a trait of globalization, can be seen in some Iranian diasporic writings as well. This paper examines Persepolis: The story of a childhood, a diasporic Iranian memoir that is included in the educational curriculum of some Western schools. …

A Contextual Understanding Of Mainland Chinese Parent Involvement In Their Children’S Primary School Years’ Education, Wuying Zou, Neil Anderson, Reesa Sorin, Karim Hajhashemi
Dr. Karim Hajhashemi
Although parent involvement has received long-standing attention in the literature, there is limited research about Chinese parent involvement, especially, in mainland, China. With Chinese immigrant students’ high academic success having been repeatedly reported, more attention has been given to Chinese parent involvement, however it was restricted to Chinese overseas, or in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It is unclear whether findings obtained accurately described Chinese parent involvement, and can be generalized to Chinese in Mainland. This research attempts to add an in-depth contextual understanding of mainland Chinese parent involvement. Based on face-to-face interviews, this study investigated Chinese parents’ involvement in, expectations …

The Relationship Between College Men’S Religious Preference And Their Level Of Moral Development., Jerry L. Tatum, John D. Foubert, Dale R. Fuqua, Christopher Ray
John D. Foubert
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between first year college men's religious preference (Catholic, Protest.ant, or none) and their level of moral development as measured by the Defining Issues TestShort Form (Rest, 1986). Data analyses were conducted based upon results for 161 in-coming college men. Results of an analysis of variance indicated that those with no stated religious preference had significantly higher P scores (M = 45.2, SD= 16.8) than respondents who identified as Roman Catholic (M = 36.1, SD= J 6.7) or as Protestant (M= 38.6, SD= 17.3). Implications are discussed regarding the relevance of …

Creativity is an essential, but elusive human skill (or set of skills). As humans, we know there is something special about those who are highly creative – we build museums and art galleries to showcase these talents, and love to see our students come up with new and useful ideas. What we sometimes have trouble understanding is what conditions or environments foster creativity, and which ones prevent creativity from developing. And everyone has a theory! The purpose of this research study was to better understand, from the perspective of teachers, what exactly creativity is, and what teachers think encourages or …
Influences Of Theory And Practice In The Development Of Servant Leadership In Students, Jennifer Massey, Tracey Sulak, Rishi Sriram
Influences Of Theory And Practice In The Development Of Servant Leadership In Students, Jennifer Massey, Tracey Sulak, Rishi Sriram
Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.
This paper explores the extent to which the leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities of upper-year student leaders on one private, United States college campus developed as a consequence of their education and experience as an extended orientation leader. Findings reveal that compared to leadership education in the classroom, leadership development is limited by experiences that do not include intentional reflection. We identify key elements in pedagogical frameworks that support and impede the leadership development of students and propose strategies to enhance the learning outcomes established for leadership development.

Master Mentor: Robert Schuellein '44 Leaves A Lasting Impression, Maureen E. Schlangen
Maureen E. Schlangen
Robert Schuellein left the University of Dayton for the National Institutes of Health in 1963. But he never forgot UD and the legacy he started here: With his faculty colleague and fellow Marianist Paul Machowicz ’41, Schuellein helped create the first master’s program in the College of Arts and Sciences. When Schuellein died in 2011 at the age of 91, he added to that legacy — with a bequest totaling $2.5 million for a faculty research endowment in biology.

Black In The Rainbow: “Quaring” The Black Gay Male Student Experience At Historically Black Universities, Darris R. Means, Audrey J. Jaeger
Darris R Means, Ph.D.
This qualitative study explores the collegiate experiences of four Black gay male students who attend historically Black universities. The study utilizes a quare theory framework, an alternative framework to queer theory. Quare theory calls our attention to the intersection of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. Data were collected through a 1:1 interview with each participant and photovoice. This study reveals how the students navigate their collegiate experiences, internalize homophobia, begin to embrace their own sexual orientation identity, and find support (or lack of support) for their sexual orientation identities. Recommendations for practice and directions for future research are offered.

Establishing A National Certification System For Teachers: How Are We Doing?, Lawrence C. Ingvarson
Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)
Any serious policies about teacher quality must address the challenge of making sure teaching can compete with other professions for its share of high quality graduates from schools and universities. Recent research shows that it is the salaries of experienced teachers relative to other professions that distinguishes countries with higher student achievement. Beginning with the 1998 a Senate Inquiry into the Status of Teaching, a string of reports recommended that a professional certification should be established to provide recognition to highly accomplished teachers and that education authorities should structure remuneration accordingly. In 2010 the Australian Institute for Teaching and School …

Challenges To Success In Higher Education: An Examination Of Educational Challenges From The Voices Of College-Bound Black Males, Jameel A. Scott, Kenneth J. Taylor, Phd, Robert T. Palmer, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
In recent years, researchers have devoted much discussion to finding ways to increase the academic success of Black males in K-12 and higher education. Despite this emphasis, Black male enrollment in higher education stands at 4.5%, which is the same as it was in 1976. One factor noted by researchers for the stagnation among Black male college enrollment is their disproportionate departure from high school. Therefore, this qualitative study of college-bound high school seniors discusses four critical factors that contribute to Black males premature departure from high school. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Diverging Interests: Balancing Racial Diversity And Race-Sensitive Policies Across State Higher Education Systems, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, J. Luke Wood, Phd, Dorsey Spencer
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
The United States has sought to racially diversify its public colleges since 1964. Laws have been implemented and court challenges have occurred to facilitate the racial diversification of public universities. Racially diversifying higher education is particularly important for states that have a desegregation agreement with Office of Civil Rights (OCR) for operating policies traceable to de jure segregation. Although many states have used affirmative action to diversify their colleges, as these policies continue to be attacked and prohibited, colleges are abandoning race-sensitive policies to foster diversity. This article explains these diverging issues and offers recommendations for universities that are legally …

The Magnificent “Mile”: Impacting Black Male Retention And Persistence At An Hbcu, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Dina C. Maramba, Phd, T. Elon Dancy, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
A strong body of research has documented the supportive environments of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and their impact on facilitating student success. Notwithstanding the consistency of these findings, recent reports and empirical research have highlighted the problems that HBCUs are experiencing with Black male enrollment, campus engagement, retention, success, and graduation. The purpose of this article is to discuss the Male Initiative on Leadership and Excellence (MILE) and to describe its impact on retention and persistence of Black men at an HBCU. Hopefully, the MILE will inspire administrators and student affairs practitioners at HBCUs to adopt a similar …

The Likelihood Of Transfer For Black Males In Community Colleges: Examining The Effects Of Engagement Using Multilevel, Multinomial Modeling, J. Luke Wood, Phd, Robert T. Palmer, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Research indicates that Black male collegians tend to disproportionately seek out postsecondary educational opportunities at community colleges; despite this, a paucity of Black men actual transfer to four-year colleges and universities. In order to help facilitate transfer for Black male community college students, this article investigates the effects of student engagement on Black male students’ self-reported likelihood of transfer. The implications of this study provides compelling context for institutional practice and future research to help community colleges be more intentional about improving transfer outcomes for among Black male students.

Understanding The Personal Goals Of Black Male Community College Students: Facilitating Academic And Psychosocial Development, J. Luke Wood, Phd, Robert T. Palmer, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Similar to 4-year institutions, community colleges are struggling to find ways to increase the success rates of racial and ethnic minority students in general and Black males specifically. According to data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS), compared to their male counterparts, Black males have the lowest retention and graduation rates among their peers. Given this, using national data from BPS, this article has investigated the personal goals of Black males in community colleges and provided context for how community college officials can use these goals to facilitate Black male academic and psychosocial development. Indeed, this article is …

Applied Learning In Online Education: A Comparative Study Employing Deal Critical Reflection, John R. Fisher, Margaret Mittelman
Dr. John R. Fisher
This article stretches the boundaries of the meaning of applied learning to include online learning activities. The DEAL model of critical reflection was used to obtain student feedback in comparing two delivery strategies of an upper- division online leadership capstone course. Student reflection comments were analyzed for offerings of the course in summer and fall semesters. The fall delivery of the course adopted an applied reading summary strategy which required students to specifically apply their learning to their work and career plans. The DEAL model of critical reflection provided rich qualitative data evaluating teaching approaches and suggested students preferred applied …
