Quantitative Reasoning Learning Progressions For Environmental Science: Developing A Framework, Robert L. Mayes, Franziska Peterson, Rachel Bonilla Jan 2013

Quantitative Reasoning Learning Progressions For Environmental Science: Developing A Framework, Robert L. Mayes, Franziska Peterson, Rachel Bonilla

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Quantitative reasoning is a complex concept with many definitions and a diverse account in the literature. The purpose of this article is to establish a working definition of quantitative reasoning within the context of science, construct a quantitative reasoning framework, and summarize research on key components in that framework. Context underlies all quantitative reasoning; for this review, environmental science serves as the context. In the framework, we identify four components of quantitative reasoning: the quantification act, quantitative literacy, quantitative interpretation of a model, and quantitative modeling. Within each of these components, the framework provides elements that comprise the four components. The …

The Effects Of Rewards In Reading Incentive Programs On Reading Motivation, Attitude And Participation In Middle School Students, Brynn Beavers Jan 2013

The Effects Of Rewards In Reading Incentive Programs On Reading Motivation, Attitude And Participation In Middle School Students, Brynn Beavers

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

Literacy is an essential part of the curriculum in education today. Educators strive to influence students to read and gain more experience as readers. There are several reasons why literacy in the classroom is so important to the education of 21st century students. In the workplace today, jobs are requiring that students have a greater ability to read and write fluently (The Time, Learning, and Afterschool Taskforce, 2007). The bar of expectation that the corporate sector has for workers has been raised. It is the job of the school system and educators to motivate, instruct and cultivate literacy in the …

Game-Based Learning In The Social Studies Classroom, Shannon Magnacca Jan 2013

Game-Based Learning In The Social Studies Classroom, Shannon Magnacca

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

This paper investigates if using computer assisted instruction through game-based learning in the social studies classroom increases student achievement when compared to traditional modes of instruction. The paper also determines if the experimental group was intrinsically motivated to learn more than the control group. The students were sixth graders in a social studies classroom. These students participated in a ten day learning period. Students were given a pretest and posttest, as well as an Intrinsic Motivational Survey. The results of the study can be used to guide educators when planning real world lessons that are computer based.

Eportfolios: Helping Students Take Control Of Their Learning, Adam Williams

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

With the addition of new technology to the classroom teachers have many new tools for the student to use. ePortfolios allow teachers to have student take control of their own learning while collecting their learning artifacts. This study looks at the impact of ePortfolios in the learning process at the high school level.

Exponential Kleisli Monoids As Eilenberg-Moore Algebras, Dirk Hofmann, Frédéric Mynard, Gavin J. Seal Jan 2013

Exponential Kleisli Monoids As Eilenberg-Moore Algebras, Dirk Hofmann, Frédéric Mynard, Gavin J. Seal

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Lax monoidal powerset-enriched monads yield a monoidal structure on the category of monoids in the Kleisli category of a monad. Exponentiable objects in this category are identified as those Kleisli monoids with algebraic structure. This result generalizes the classical identification of exponentiable topological spaces as those whose lattice of open subsets forms a continuous lattice.

The Mc-Dagum Distribution And Its Statistical Properties With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Sasith Rajasooriya Jan 2013

The Mc-Dagum Distribution And Its Statistical Properties With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Sasith Rajasooriya

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, a new class of distributions called Mc-Dagum distribution is proposed. This class of distributions contains several distributions such as beta-Dagum, beta-Burr III, beta-Fisk, Dagum, Burr III and Fisk distributions as special cases. The hazard function, reverse hazard function, moments, mean residual life function, Renyi entropy and Fisher information are obtained. Lorenz, Bonferroni and Zenga curves are derived. Maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters and numerical examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed class of distributions.

Examining The Role Of Facilitated Conflict On Student Learning Outcomes In A Diversity Education Course, Sabrina N. Ross Jan 2013

Examining The Role Of Facilitated Conflict On Student Learning Outcomes In A Diversity Education Course, Sabrina N. Ross

Department of Curriculum, Foundations, & Reading Faculty Publications

Building on the Piagetian concept of disequilibrium (i.e., cognitive conflict) and empirical research documenting relationships between cognitive conflict and transformative learning, this article explores the influence of facilitated conflict (i.e., intentional efforts by the instructor to help students reflect on and work through the intergroup conflict they experienced in the course) on the learning outcomes of female students enrolled in an exploratory diversity education course. Various forms of student writing including free-writing exercises and reflective papers were used in addition to two survey response questions to identify sources of cognitive conflict and assess student learning outcomes. Findings revealed that strategies …

Distance-Based Graph Invariants Of Trees And The Harary Index, Stephan G. Wagner, Hua Wang, Xiao-Dong Zhang Jan 2013

Distance-Based Graph Invariants Of Trees And The Harary Index, Stephan G. Wagner, Hua Wang, Xiao-Dong Zhang

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduced in 1947, the Wiener index W(T) = ∑{u,v}⊆V(T) d(u, v) is one of the most thoroughly studied chemical indices. The extremal structures (in particular, trees with various constraints) that maximize or minimize the Wiener index have been extensively investigated. The Harary index H(T) = ∑{u,v}⊆V(T) , introduced in 1993, can be considered as the 'reciprocal analogue' of the Wiener index. From recent studies, it is known that the extremal structures of the Harary index and the Wiener index coincide in many instances, i.e., the graphs that maximize the Wiener index minimize the Harary index and vice versa. In this …

Extremal Values Of Ratios: Distance Problems Vs. Subtree Problems In Trees, László A. Székely, Hua Wang Jan 2013

Extremal Values Of Ratios: Distance Problems Vs. Subtree Problems In Trees, László A. Székely, Hua Wang

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

The authors discovered a dual behaviour of two tree indices, the Wiener index and the number of subtrees, for a number of extremal problems [Discrete Appl. Math. 155 (3) 2006, 374-385; Adv. Appl. Math. 34 (2005), 138-155]. Barefoot, Entringer and Székely [Discrete Appl. Math. 80 (1997), 37-56] determined extremal values of σT(w)/σT(u), σT(w)/σT(v), σ(T)/σT(v), and σ(T)/σT(w), where T is a tree on n vertices, v is in the centroid of …

How Is Teacher Self-Efficacy And Attitude Toward Technology Affected By Extended Intrusive Training?, Gregg Miles Jan 2013

How Is Teacher Self-Efficacy And Attitude Toward Technology Affected By Extended Intrusive Training?, Gregg Miles

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that intrusive training has on teacher attitude and self-efficacy toward technology. Intrusive training was defined as making proactive steps on the part of the Instructional Technology Specialist to introduce teachers to new ideas, information and instruction through emails, social media, small groups and individual training sessions. A four and a half week intrusive training process was implemented with the treatment group and the results were compared to a control group. No statistical difference was found in the attitude and self-efficacy of the treatment group compared to the control group. Several …
