Faculty evaluations can be time-consuming, anxiety-producing (for Bothe the chair and the faculty member), and extremely limited in their impact. But they don't have to be. The expression “the Great Resignation” refers to the trend, largely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, for employees to quit their jobs either because they’ve found more attractive possibilities or because they’ve decided to retire early. Many higher education institutions unintentionally make it challenging for students to raise concerns. Students often feel intimidated by faculty and administrators, yet most grievance processes require students to take the initiative to voice a concern. Adding stress is the lack of clarity of these processes, which can make students feel disconnected and uncertain where to turn. To alleviate the stress of students, alternative perspectives must be considered. This session will provide participants with practical strategies for developing processes that respect the student voice and encourage students to bring forward their concerns. Presenter will discuss the results of a survey which included respondents from the 2020 Academic Chairperson’s Conference on what employees want from work. Results were compared between what employees valued and what supervisors thought employees wanted from work.
