With the polarization of opinions around COVID 19, chairs and deans must become experts at navigating conflict and creating synergy from diversity, oftentimes while communicating virtually. Four chairs (of Business, Education and Sports & Exercise Science, Social Sciences, and Psychology Departments), and their dean, will share strategies for encouraging the expression of diverse opinions in virtual faculty meetings.

Many higher education institutions unintentionally make it challenging for students to raise concerns. Students often feel intimidated by faculty and administrators, yet most grievance processes require students to take the initiative to voice a concern. Adding stress is the lack of clarity of these processes, which can make students feel disconnected and uncertain where to turn. To alleviate the stress of students, alternative perspectives must be considered. This session will provide participants with practical strategies for developing processes that respect the student voice and encourage students to bring forward their concerns. Group discussions and scenario-based breakout sessions will be included.

Department chairs and other academic leaders were invited to participate in Crucial Conversations training as part of professional development programming sponsored by the provost’s office. This session will 1) describe the logistics of the program including the Crucial Conversations platform; 2) present cohort data, 3) share assessment data for the program; and 4) identify best practices for on-going communication training.
