his book came about as a result of The Australian Government Summer School for Teachers program that was announced as part of the 2007–08 Budget Package: Realising Our Potential. The Summer School brought together over 200 academics, teachers and education department officials for a smorgasbord of keynote presentations, workshops and social events that is unlikely to be repeated in this country. English for a New Millennium gives every English teacher an opportunity to share in the richness of that experience. It includes contributions from Catherine Beavis, Ray Misson, Elizabeth Webby, Gabriel Matters and Clare Bradford.

Studies such as PISA that attempt to compare outcomes across educational systems are expensive and difficult to implement. Further, the results of such studies are routinely criticized by educational commentators - particularly when the results are not consistent with their preconceived ideas about the relative merits and efficiencies of various educational practices and systems. This chapter discusses what is done to ameliorate the threats to the validity of PISA in five areas often targeted by commentators and reviewers as sources of invalidity in international comparisons. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS): Concept and Design - The purpose of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens. The article describes how the learning context for civic education is explored in the ICCS survey. It outlines the conceptual framework, the design of the study and the assessment instruments for students, teachers and school principals as well as a national context survey collecting data on the national contexts for civic and citizenship education.

In this article, the author draws on the experiences of doing an ethnography of mas’ making practices in Trinidad Carnival mas’ camps to explore and dialogue with her perception of self as a becoming native ethnographer and her valuing of the perceptions of a member of the community’s view of her role as another colonizer. She addresses the tensions between contestation, arrogant perceptions, and deep dialogue; the various forms of identification that informed the research process; and the various ways in which she positioned herself.
