The popularity, power, and availability of mobile devices make them powerful tools in the hands of millennial learners. Many teens and preteens are currently using cell phones and mobile devices daily to communicate. When combined with popular social networking tools, iPods, handheld devices and mobile phones can support traditional instruction. As we develop instructional systems using Second Life and other virtual worlds, learners find droning lectures, stale slide presentations, and instructional methodologies that are 10 years behind the current thinking. This session will discuss and demonstrate learning by doing in proxy-based learning environments using constructivist and social learning theory approaches to teaching in Second Life and other virtual environments. Participants should bring laptops with Second Life to participate in demonstrations.

The author, an educational researcher who has not taught in a school for almost 10 years, agreed to take over a colleague's German classes for a week while the colleague holidayed overseas. The author recounts her experience of teaching in the 'real world' of schooling over these five days, including her interaction with the students and faculty, staff meetings, doubts about her linguistic capabilities, finding out how the school's leaders perceived their role, curriculum.

This session will identify critical factors and challenges associated with utilizing existing resources as well as producing and disseminating personal and classroom web-based video. The presenter will discuss and demonstrate the process of creating and publishing persistent video resources online including technical requirements, norms, and current levels of usage. At the University level, Haskell uses web-based video to supplement instruction and promote student reflection. Utilizing Internet-based video as a persistent resource, Mr. Haskell was able to increase interest, bolster recruitment and participation, and secure school support for his high school percussion program. We begin our presentation with an overview of Google Tools and the benefits of using them in your classroom. We will discuss methods to increase student access to information, decrease workloads, and create collaborative opportunities. With the current economic times, budgets are feeling the strain, as are teachers and faculty in Higher Education settings. With web 2.0 tools, specifically Google Tools, we are empowered to use the technology to decrease our budgets, create a paperless environment, and introduce collaborative learning environments into our curriculum.

This session focuses on what the research says about males as readers and introduces the audience to great boy books and other types of text that appeals to male readers. The presenters have chosen titles from the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards program that are of interest to young male readers. Presenters also introduce and promote Kentucky’s children’s choice reading program, the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards. To misquote George Ella Lyon, the presenters woudl like to get boys to "shake hands with a book."

There is a wide variety of universities, university campuses and university courses in Australia available to those interested in pursuing a higher edu- cation degree. This paper examines the impact of increasing competition for entrance to university on the educational outcomes for students from the govern- ment school sector. Using Melbourne as a case study, the research shows that, over a four-year period of increased competition, entry to some of the more aca- demically accessible university campuses in the city became more difficult and this disproportionately affected the opportunities for university entrance among some groups.
