Whole Number Knowledge And Number Lines Help To Develop Fraction Concepts, Catherine Pearn Dec 2006

Whole Number Knowledge And Number Lines Help To Develop Fraction Concepts, Catherine Pearn

Catherine Pearn

Many researchers have noted that students' whole number knowledge can interfere with their efforts to learn fractions. In this paper the authors discuss a teaching experiment conducted with students in Years 5 and 6 from an eastern suburban school in Melbourne. The focus of the teaching experiment was to use number lines to highlight students' understanding of whole numbers then fractions. The study used a screening test and interview using number lines to probe students' understanding of fractions as numbers. By using whole numbers on number lines first, the interview questions clearly helped many students to connect whole number and …

Engaging With The Profession : Communities Of Learners, Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers

In 2005 the Australian Literacy Educators' Association (ALEA) established a professional learning project focused on the STELLA professional standards developed earlier in the decade by the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) and ALEA. The key question for the project was: How does STELLA provide a framework for teachers' professional learning? The project supported a small group of primary teachers in each of three states and territories: Western Australia, South Australia and the ACT. These groups worked with a mentor to explore the STELLA professional standards, to develop their own professional learning, and ultimately, to share their stories …

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn Dec 2006

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn

William C Welburn

The contributions of William Carl Bolivar, a Philadelphia African American bibliophile and journalist, are considered. Bolivar’s interest in historical documentation shaped his sense of interconnectedness with the collective memory of Philadelphia’s black community. His collecting interests are manifested in his column published in the Philadelphia Tribune, in his contributions to the American Negro Historical Society and other social and cultural organizations in Philadelphia, and in a published catalog of portions of his collection. Bolivar’s network of collectors and associates formed a “nucleus for a larger effort” to preserve African American cultural heritage. Their collecting efforts formed the foundation for black …

Developing Mathematical Literacy, Ross Turner, L Steen, H Burkhardt Dec 2006

Developing Mathematical Literacy, Ross Turner, L Steen, H Burkhardt

Ross Turner

Mathematical literacy has received increasing attention in many countries over the last few years. This is partly driven by concerns of employers that too many students leave school unable to function mathematically at the level needed in the modern world of work. Further, it is increasingly recognised that people can only tackle many of the challenges of modern life effectively if they are mathematically literate in key areas. Planning in personal finance, assessment of risk, design in the home or on the computer screen, and critical appraisal of the flood of statistical information from advertising, politicians and the press — …

The Roles Of Modelling In Learning Mathematics, Malcolm Swann, Ross Turner, Caroline Yoon, E Muller Dec 2006

The Roles Of Modelling In Learning Mathematics, Malcolm Swann, Ross Turner, Caroline Yoon, E Muller

Ross Turner

This chapter illustrates how Applications and Modelling promote the learning of mathematics by developing the student’s mathematical language and her use of tools, and by developing the learner’s capacity to ask and answer questions in, with, and about mathematics.

Modelling And Applications In Pisa, Ross Turner

Ross Turner

Several test items from the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) are now in the public domain. Some of these incorporate elements of modelling. This paper highlights a selection of those items, shows some interesting student outcomes such as gender differences and item difficulty, and poses some questions about the implications of these items for school mathematics.

Is School-Wide Adoption Of Ict Change For The Better?, Katherine Dix Dec 2006

Is School-Wide Adoption Of Ict Change For The Better?, Katherine Dix

Dr Katherine Dix

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in schools is now an intrinsic part of students learning, both inside and outside the classroom. The adoption and impact of ICT on teaching practice and learning outcomes has been a source of keen interest among government policy makers, school leaders, teachers and researchers worldwide. Research in this field has principally centred on pseudo-scientific comparative studies conducted mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom, with a focus on academic achievement. Few empirical studies have been conducted in Australia, or worldwide, that focus on student attitudinal outcomes framed within a design-based …

Reflections On The Use Of Research To Inform Teaching, Marion Meiers Dec 2006

Reflections On The Use Of Research To Inform Teaching, Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers

This article is a response to the AATE statement of belief 'We use research and evidence to inform teaching practice and improve the learning of students'. This statement and the elaborating notes focus on the was in which teachers, throughout their careers, use research for the key purposes of informing their teaching practices and improving students' learning. The author maps the territory of research, including some backwards mapping, to explore impact. There are major challenges for researchers seeking to identify the impact of teachers' professional learning on students' learning. The most significant challenge lies in the need for research that …

In The Balance - The Future Of Australia's Primary Schools, Maxwell Angus, Harriet Olney, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

Research BackgroundIn the Balance is the report of an investigation into the state of Australian primary schooling, based mainly on evidence provided by staff from a random sample of 160 primary schools. Research Contribution In 2005, the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) funded the Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) to initiate the investigation. APPA in turn commissioned a research team from Edith Cowan University and the Australian Council for Educational Research to undertake the study. Research Significance Generally, participating principals and teachers were grateful for the opportunity to ‘have their say’. In their view, too little account …

Greening The Business Economics Curriculum: A Paradigm For Environmental Stewardship In The 21st Century, Asayehgn Desta Dec 2006

Greening The Business Economics Curriculum: A Paradigm For Environmental Stewardship In The 21st Century, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Economic growth depends upon the wealth of goods and services that natural resources provide. Yet, over the years, as corporations pursue hefty returns on their investment, they have been depleting the natural resources so vital for economic development. After the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, however, corporations that once viewed environmentalism as a threat to their survival all of a sudden realized sustainability as a means of gaining a competitive edge; it reduced costs and stimulated greater innovation. When the program of action for the Earth Summit was reviewed in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in …

Computer-Mediated Peer Response In A Level-Iv Esl Academic Writing Class: A Cultural Historical Activity Theoretical Perspective, Li Jin Dec 2006

Computer-Mediated Peer Response In A Level-Iv Esl Academic Writing Class: A Cultural Historical Activity Theoretical Perspective, Li Jin

Li Jin

Very few studies focus on how English as a second language (ESL) students’ agency and their unique histories as an integral part of the social cultural environment influence his or her participation in computer-mediated peer response tasks, particularly in a multimedia-based synchronous communication environment. Considering each ESL student as an active agency with unique historical bearings, the dissertation investigated ESL students’ participation in computer-mediated peer response (CMPR) tasks that used instant messenger (IM) as the communication technology between students from the cultural historical activity theoretical (CHAT) perspective, which views all human interaction as a dynamic developmental process. A case study …
