It was the purpose of this study (1) to compare the cost of textbooks for grades one through six for the first class school districts in the State of Washington; (2) to establish an ideal textbook budget for optimum learning; (3) to find the useful life of a textbook as limited by durability and need for revision in certain subject areas, and (4) to investigate storage procedures, particularly central storage versus individual building storage, to determine the most efficient use of the basic and supplemental texts owned by a district.

Teachers are being encouraged to achieve competency in improved mathematics instruction through workshops, "in-service training," National Science Foundation Scholarships, Carnegie Foundation Scholarships, and college summer schools. By providing training and sufficient motivation, educators can solve the primary problem in revamping our mathematics' curriculum. The purpose of this study was (1) to define the general areas that help determine teaching performance, (2) to find a way to evaluate these areas as objectively as possible, and (3) to devise a form on which the results can be placed and easily interpreted. The problem was to study methods of evaluating the teaching staff without endangering their morale, without criticism of favoritism, and with a final goal of detecting and correcting weaknesses in the teaching profession.

It was the purpose of this study to determine whether, and to what degree, the quality of instruction of non-English-speaking beginning Indian children could be improved by the (1) elaboration of the curriculum of selected beginning classrooms to provide wider learning experiences for the children, and (2) acquainting the teachers of these classrooms with aids, skills, and techniques judged to be effective in teaching oral English to Indian children and in promoting readiness for reading.

The origin and development of pupil transportation in the United States has been influenced by social, economic, and technological factors. In an interdependent way, these factors have directed and controlled the evolution of pupil transportation. The reason for transporting pupils to school are rooted in the elements of our rural culture and in the social, economic, and technological forces acting upon it. The American farmer, by living on the land he tilled, helped to introduce forms of rural social structure which made pupil transportation inevitable. It was the purpose of this study: (1) to trace the historical development, through various levels, of the certification of professional educational personnel in New Mexico; (2) to note the extent to which the schools of the state had reached or exceeded state-prescribed standards for their educational personnel from 1912 to 1958; and (3) to use widely accepted factors which may indicate whether improved educational levels in the state had accompanied higher certification requirements. In the year 1950, public laws 815 and 874 were formally added to the federal statutes through action by the Congress of the United States. This legislation provided federal funds to public schools under conditions which enabled and encouraged their integration of Indian students. Overall, such integration was advantageous to Indian groups. Since the 1920's the conviction that Indians learned better in the public schools, where there was increased contact with the majority culture, had been growing. The purpose of this study was to determine the Indian or Spanish-American bilingual child's proficiency in the comprehension of antonyms of the English language. The method employed was (1) to devise a test which will give the child an opportunity to indicate his use of antonyms and his ability to recognize common pairs of opposites. It was the first purpose of this study to investigate a considerable group of elementary school pupils with the intention of determining the measurable growth in reading ability during a seven-month period of instruction. The second purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a significant difference existed in the amount of reading growth between the unilinguals of the sampling and the bilinguals. The third purpose of the study was to identify specific areas of weakness in reading and either to make appropriate recommendations for their corrections or to point out the area of indicated research.

(1) Employers in farm related occupations are not assuming the responsibility of educating their employees, (2) the proportion of workers able to secure unskilled employment is decreasing, (3) the numbers of skilled, technical, clerical, managerial and sales jobs are increasing, {4) many rural youth will inevitably enter non-farming agricultural jobs and (5) although their farm backgrounds and experiences are valuable, they will require considerable education to qualify for and advance in satisfactory employment.

The purpose of this study was to compile information (1) on the need for additional qualified personnel in the profession of education; (2) on the relatively untapped manpower of retire military personnel; (3) to become acquainted with the advantages and disadvantages of second careers in education; (4) on existing programs in schools of higher education designed to prepare persons from other areas of endeavor for a career in teaching; and (5) to develop an approach from this study for counseling military personnel nearing retirement and retired for a post-service career in education.
