Diagramming Academic Equity: Exploring Educator Perceptions Of Using Student Data To Institute Equitable Academic Programming In Public Secondary Schools, Matthew Dass
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
By viewing Adams’ Equity Theory through an educational equity lens, the author intends to demonstrate which data educators feel are most important when designing education plans that offer all public secondary students equitable access to school curricula and resources. Creating equitable educational plans for all students is vital to ensuring students are granted access to the curricular resources necessary to both achieve their respective academic potential, and stimulate engagement through integrating individual student interests into academic planning. Consequently, this study seeks to establish specifically which data points educators feel are most important when instituting equitable education programming for students, and …
Family Engagement In Schools: A Training For School Staff, Noah Brenden
Family Engagement In Schools: A Training For School Staff, Noah Brenden
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Family engagement in schools is examined concerning its benefits, characteristics, common barriers, and how it can be developed. There is a consensus that increased family engagement leads to a better overall educational performance from students. Family engagement literature does well in describing the benefits, characteristics, and common barriers to family engagement. However, to gain a complete understanding of how family engagement in schools can be promoted, further research needs to look at various measures that have proven to be effective.

The Impact Of A Smartlab Implementation On Rural Schools In North Dakota, Tonya M. Greywind
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This mixed methods quasi-experimental phenomenological study investigated the impact that a SmartLab® implementation had on four rural schools in the state of North Dakota. This study featured semi structured interview questions for facilitators, semi-structured focus group questions for students, and a digital literacy pre and post assessment (DLA) that was administered to students. This study looked at student learning in terms of twenty-first century skills, teacher and student perspectives in terms of student learning as well as teacher perspectives on the impact of the SmartLab® on their own teaching methods.
Two facilitators from two of the four schools were interviewed …

The objective is that this training will result in the education of school staff on mindfulness and how to effectively implement these techniques with students, which will have a positive …
Uncertainty In Academia: A Mixed Methods Study Identifying How Value Statements On Plagiarism Correlate With Plagiarism Reporting Behaviors Of Undergraduate Faculty In A Distance Education Program, Laurie Kay Larson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Plagiarism is a growing concern for colleges and universities around the globe. Research has shown that an overwhelming majority of college students today have admitted to cheating at some point during their academic career; however, some studies have demonstrated that faculty reporting rates are not mirroring this trend. While many studies detail faculty perceptions on plagiarism, this study focused specifically on faculty plagiarism reporting behaviors at a predominantly online institution. Additionally, this study identified five predetermined value statement factors derived from the available literature and further explored how those factors influenced and/or impeded faculty decisions to report a plagiarism violation. …

English Learner Advancement In Avmr Structuring, Kristina Bradley
English Learner Advancement In Avmr Structuring, Kristina Bradley
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Add+Vantage Math Recovery (AVMR) is an intensive remedial math program that involves diagnostic assessments and learning trajectories that help teachers identify and work with students who have been identified as having significant difficulties and specific learning gaps in early number learning. When analyzing the AVMR data to see if students can structure numbers as expected for their grade levels in the school district where this study takes place, teachers in the district noted that those who struggle the most are English learners (ELs) and students receiving special education services. While students receiving special education services will continue to experience specialized …

Providing A Platform: An Examination Of How Teachers Utilize And Practice Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Hannah Storm
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
For this study, I posed the following question to guide my research: How do elementary teachers reshape and change curriculum and/or teaching practices when provided the opportunity through professional development? Specifically, the study examined K-2 teachers at two different elementary schools in Minnesota. The study aimed to determine how teachers implemented and redesigned curriculum material when provided optional professional development sessions, focused on educational equity, multiracial/multicultural read aloud(s), and culturally responsive teaching strategies. Further, this study focused on how these teachers successfully or unsuccessfully reshaped components of curriculum and teaching practice in order to be more equitable, relevant, and responsive. …

Touchstones Of Popular Culture Among Contemporary College Students In The United States, Margaret Thoemke
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This report is based on survey research. The survey was sent out to collect popular culture items from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) students to see if there were popular culture items relevant enough to teach to English Learners (ELs) in order for them to be successful. The research showed that there are several genres of popular culture that should be taught to ELs for them to be successful academically and other to have successful interactions with their peers. This report leaves room for further research to be done in the subject as well.
The Important Role Of The Faculty Advisor In Credit-Bearing Internship Opportunities, Allison Goossens
The Important Role Of The Faculty Advisor In Credit-Bearing Internship Opportunities, Allison Goossens
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Much of the research that surrounds internships and other student experiential learning focuses on the student and the inherent benefits that they reap from such experiences. Much of this research is viewed through a developmental lens, examining how students benefit and in what conditions are conducive to the learning taking place. What is not widely noted is the work that the faculty advisors do to help facilitate that learning, ensuring that the experience is held to a high level of academic integrity. Here, the literature around this topic is explored and the importance of the faculty advisor and the role …
Technological Resources Versus Non-Technological Resources, Samantha Sapa
Technological Resources Versus Non-Technological Resources, Samantha Sapa
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study is to help show that using technology as an instructional strategy will benefit students’ knowledge on certain concepts. Improving focus and engagement will lead to increased knowledge of students. This study’s participants included ten randomly selected second-graders. They focused on the concept of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. At the beginning of this study, they were given a pre-assessment (see Appendix A) to show their current knowledge. When this study was completed, a post-assessment (see Appendix B) was given. Comparing the results of these two assessments helped to show that using technology, during teacher-led instruction, benefited …
The Effect Of Summer Vacation On Reading Level, Stacey Klinkhammer
The Effect Of Summer Vacation On Reading Level, Stacey Klinkhammer
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a lengthy break from school, with no formal academic activity, caused a decrease in a student’s academic achievement. Specifically, if reading scores decreased. The study aimed to compare two groups of high school students, primarily in grades 9-11. The study compared those who enrolled in summer school courses for remedial purposes and those who did not enroll in summer school. The study focused on students’ reading skills before and after their school’s summer vacation, which is approximately 12 weeks long. District assessments of student’s ability were the metrics used for …
Assistive Listening Devices In Primary And Secondary Educational Settings: A Systematic Review, Paige Wagner-Skinner
Assistive Listening Devices In Primary And Secondary Educational Settings: A Systematic Review, Paige Wagner-Skinner
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify the scientific evidence available to support the use of assistive listening devices in primary and secondary educational settings. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) makes it clear that it is the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) to modify the classroom environment, as needed, to enhance communicative abilities for this population (ASHA, 2016; Carney, 1998). Each journal article included in this study was published in a peer reviewed journal between the years of 2000 and 2018, written in the English language, and comprised of scientific information relevant to the research question proposed. Experimental …
