"It's Kind Of Apples And Oranges": Gay College Males' Conceptions Of Gender Transgression As Poverty, Daniel Tillapaugh, Z Nicolazzo
Daniel Tillapaugh
This paper explores the ways in which gay males in college make meaning of gender variance and transgressions from the gender binary as a form of poverty. Using epistemological bricolage, the researchers analyzed data from 17 self-identified gay cisgender males attending three colleges in Southern California. Participants represented an array of racial backgrounds and were between 20 and 23 years old. The researchers posit that three key elements influence these gay males’ meaning making: (1) gender coding and policing, (2) hyperawareness of gender transgressions, and (3) reifying hegemonic masculinity.
The Personal Is Political: Fostering A Culture Of Student Political Engagement, Demetri L. Morgan, Cecilia M. Orphan
The Personal Is Political: Fostering A Culture Of Student Political Engagement, Demetri L. Morgan, Cecilia M. Orphan
Demetri L. Morgan, Ph.D.
The mission statements of many institutions describe commitments to larger democratic purposes, including fostering student political engagement. Hundreds of campuses have sought to reclaim this mission over the past two decades. However, at issue is whether higher education is truly committed to this ideal moving forward; and if so, how to best to realize the ideal. Presenters will help attendees consider the ways to help foster a culture of student political engagement, based on findings from the study, A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy (2012).

Student Affairs Professionals Accruing Social Capital: Examining Bias Response Teams, Lucy Lepeau, J.T. Snipes, Hilary Zimmerman, Demetri Morgan
Demetri L. Morgan
One way that institutions have responded to hostile campus environments for minoritized students is by creating bias response teams. Based on a larger study, researchers use Rhoads and Black’s (1995) conceptualization of student affairs professionals as transformative educators and Stanton-Salazar’s (2011) framework of how institutional agents use social capital to examine how student affairs practitioners accrue social capital when responding to bias incidents. Our findings connect to student affairs professionals’ ongoing development of the equity, diversity, and inclusion professional competency

First-generation and low-income students are increasingly matriculating into post-secondary education. Acclimating first-generation and low-income students to higher education presents unique challenges and opportunities to improve institutional support and services. This program will inform participants about how Michigan State University used multiple data sources to assess, intervene, and support students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds involved in the Student Success Initiative. This program adds to the emerging conversation on using data to understand students and make decisions about student services.
Challenges Experienced By One Academic Mother Transitioning From Maternity Leave Back To Academia, Christy M. Craft, Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson
Challenges Experienced By One Academic Mother Transitioning From Maternity Leave Back To Academia, Christy M. Craft, Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson
Christy Moran Craft
While many scholars have written about the experience of academic motherhood in higher education, with their research revealing a number of challenges faced by academic mothers, none have presented an in-depth view of the transition of returning to work after maternity leave. For this reason, the authors used a narrative inquiry approach to analyze and interpret the first author’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences as she transitioned from maternity leave to full-time academic work as a tenured, associate professor of education at a research university. During that transition, she faced challenges related to the prioritization and fulfillment of her academic work …

Critical Influences On Sexual Minority College Males' Meaning-Making Of Their Multiple Identities, Daniel Tillapaugh
Daniel Tillapaugh
This grounded theory study explored the critical influences on college sexual minority males’ meaning-making of their multiple identities. Twenty-six cisgender males attending colleges and universities within the United States and Canada were interviewed and provided journal responses to specific prompts. Four themes emerged, including: involvement in LGBT-affirming spaces, intimate relationships with other males, involvement in student leadership positions, and ongoing exposure to heterosexism and homophobia.

Trait Emotional Intelligence, Perceived Discrimination, And Academic Achievement Among African American And Latina/O High School Students: A Study Of Academic Resilience, Nick R. Abel
Nick R. Abel
The goal of academic resilience research is to identify factors and processes which lead to academic success among groups of students generally found to be at-risk, including those of African American and Latina/o descent. The present study investigated a possible risk factor (perceptions of discrimination), a possible protective factor (emotional intelligence), and the role of gender in predicting academic achievement (as measured by high school GPA) in a sample (N = 79) of African American and Latina/o high school students attending one high school in Minnesota. Through the use of multiple regression, neither emotional intelligence nor perceptions of discrimination was …

The prevalence of mental health issues and suicidal thoughts and actions among school-aged children and adolescents is a serious issue. This article examines the scope of the problem nationwide and provides a brief overview of the literature regarding the effectiveness of school-wide screening programs for depression and suicide risk. The authors describe a suicide prevention program that has been implemented by the first author (a high school counselor in Minnesota) that combines classroom guidance, screening, and referrals for outside mental health services. This article includes recommendations for school counselors interested in implementing a school-wide screening and prevention program.

A Grounded Theory Study Explaining How Female Doctoral Candidates Negotiate Their Identities As Mothers And Scholars And Persist Unto Degree Completion, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Lucinda S. Spaulding
Lucinda S. Spaulding
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to generate a model that explains how female doctoral candidates manage and negotiate the tensions relating to their roles and identities as females, mothers, and academics within the social structure of academia. Data was collected via a questionnaire, life map, and semi-structured interview from 11 doctoral candidates enrolled in a nationally accredited Doctor of Education (EdD) program in the southeastern United States. The theoretical model produced from this study depicts the development and relationship among EdD students’ identities as females, professionals, and academics and how the roles and responsibilities related to these …

A Conversation On The Need For Women To Successfully Manage Their Multiple Identity Dimensions In Order To Persist In The Doctoral Process, Lucinda S. Spaulding, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Maria T. Spaulding
Maria Spaulding
This conversation focuses on challenges specific to female doctoral students given their multiple dimensions of identity (e.g., wife, mother, daughter, professional, emerging scholar) and the tensions they experience as they intersect these dimensions across the varied stages of the doctoral journey. This discussion is prompted by research indicating many women fail to successfully negotiate these tensions and consequently choose not to begin or cease to persist in a doctoral program. In this session we discuss (a) tensions women face in the doctoral process, (b) a theoretical foundation for female identity, and (c) strategies for successfully intersecting multiple identity dimensions, leading …

Complex Perceptions Of Identity: The Experiences Of Student Combat Veterans In Community College, Shane P. Hammond
Shane P Hammond
This qualitative study illustrates how complex perceptions of identity influence the community college experience for student veterans who have been in combat, creating barriers to their overall persistence. The collective experiences of student combat veterans at two community colleges in northwestern Massachusetts are presented, and a Combat Veteran Conceptual Identity Model to illustrate the ongoing negotiation of identity combat veterans experience while in college is intro- duced. Notable implications for future research and practice in Student Affairs are discussed.

Precursors To And Pathways Through Conversion: Catalytic Experiences Of Born Again Christian College Students, John D. Foubert, Matthew W. Brosi, Angela Watson, Dale R. Fuqua
John D. Foubert
Born again Christians are a significant religious population in the United States, and throughout the world. The process by in which a born again identity is assumed is not clearly described in the research literature. Therefore, we asked 18 born again Christian college students a series of questions designed to uncover what led to their identity of being born again. Responses fell into three overarching themes. First, participants described exposure within relationships to God’s principles. Second, participants noted the influence of introspection and reflection on their lives apart from the influence of God. Third, participants had an active response in …

Christian Academic Motherhood In Secular Higher Education: The Experiences Of One Evangelical Christian, Christy M. Craft, Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson
Christy Moran Craft
Although some scholars have highlighted the challenges faced by academic mothers in secular higher education and others have investigated those of Christian academic mothers in Christian higher education, none have looked at the experiences of Christian academic mothers in secular higher education. This autoethnographic study was conducted to analyze and to interpret one evangelical Christian’s experiences as a new academic mother at a secular university. The results of this study suggest that religious academic mothers working in secular higher education might benefit from drawing on religious-based strategies for dealing with the unique challenges that they face in their pursuit of …
