Press Releases
Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will present George Brant’s “Into the Breeches!” Thursday-Monday, Sept. 23-27, in Verser Theatre. Performances will be held Thursday-Saturday and Monday at 7:30 p.m., with a matinée performance on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Set in 1942, “Into the Breeches!” tells the story of what happens when the crew and leading actors of the Oberon Play House go to fight in World War II. Instead of shutting down the playhouse for the season, the director’s wife plans a production of Shakespeare’s “Henriad”—a combination of “Henry IV” and “Henry V”—with an all-female cast.

Independence, Dependence, And Intellectual Disability: From Cultural Origins To Useful Application, Scot Danforth
Independence, Dependence, And Intellectual Disability: From Cultural Origins To Useful Application, Scot Danforth
Education Faculty Articles and Research
American government educational policy and leading advocacy groups commonly espouse independence as a primary goal for young people with intellectual disabilities. An extensive philosophical literature of autonomy has focused mostly on analyses of cognition that achieve individual self-governance. But the loosely defined concept of independence used by disability policymakers and advocates provides a more malleable, social understanding that involves someone actively relying on the assistance of others. The purpose of this paper is to examine the cultural, historical origins of the notion of independence for disabled persons through an exploration of the biography of Ed Roberts, the father of the …

Orchestration tools may support K-12 teachers in facilitating student learning, especially when designed to address classroom stakeholders’ needs. Our previous work revealed a need for human-AI shared control when dynamically pairing students for collaborative learning in the classroom, but offered limited guidance on the role each agent should take. In this study, we designed storyboards for scenarios where teachers, students and AI co-orchestrate dynamic pairing when using AI-based adaptive math software for individual and collaborative learning. We surveyed 54 math teachers on their co-orchestration preferences. We found that teachers would like to share control with the AI to lessen their …

Naac Accreditation And Responsibility Of College Libraries In India, Shantashree Sengupta
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore was established by University Grants Commission in 1994 for evaluating the academic, administrative, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities of Universities, Colleges, and Recognized Institutes in India. Since 1994, all the State Governments have taken stringent steps to accredit the Colleges and Universities in their state. The present paper attempts to be a helpful, suggestive guide for the College Library and Information Centres preparing for assessment and accreditation by NAAC, Bangalore. Instead of restricting only to Library, the paper also aims to be fruitful for librarians by mentioning the possible ways through which librarian can …

Each year we select a theme to help us focus on Ouachita’s essential purpose. That theme is based on our university’s vision, mission and value statements. This year’s theme is: “Vision, Integrity, Service.” Each year, my convocation remarks introduce the theme. This morning, I want to spend a few moments to offer one perspective on the idea of “vision.”

Tutors’ Beliefs About Language And Roles: Practice As Language Policy In Emi Contexts, Marion Heron, Doris Dippold, Necmi Aksit, Tijen Aksit, Jill Doubleday, Kara Mckeown

It has been well established that for all students, but particularly second language (L2) English speaking students, academic English speaking skills are key to developing specialist terminology and disciplinary content in an English as a medium of instruction (EMI) context. However, what is less clear in many contexts is the institutional language policy necessary to guide and support both L2 English speaking students and disciplinary tutors. In this paper, we focus on disciplinary tutors’ beliefs of language and their roles with respect to language support to surface implicit and covert language policies. We argue that in the absence of explicit …

Ouachita Baptist University’s Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Art & Design is hosting “Crowded Spaces,” an exhibit by Arlington, Texas, artist Treslyn Shipley through Oct. 3 in the Adams Gallery in Moses-Provine Hall. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The exhibit features a collection of painted canvases focused on people engaging in social interaction in crowded public spaces. While Shipley said she’s always sought to represent basic human similarities through her work, the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the importance of human interaction. As it led to social distancing and isolation, Shipley was inspired to create a series of …

Visualizing The Convergence Of Metaliteracy And The Information Literacy Framework, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey, Kelsey L. O'Brien

Displaying information in a visual manner frequently enhances clarity. Highlighting thematic elements and their interrelationships can lead to understanding, even insights, that might not otherwise happen. While words describe, well-conceived graphics illuminate in both subtle and overt ways. Synergies between word and image are especially powerful.
The visualization at the heart of this chapter makes connections between two separate but related frameworks: information literacy and metaliteracy. The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education acknowledges that it was influenced by metaliteracy, and in particular metacognition.1 Metaliteracy emerged prior to the development of the ACRL Framework and was similarly designed …

Ever-Present “Illegality:” How Political Climate Impacts Undocumented Latinx Parents’ Engagement In Students’ Postsecondary Access And Success, Stephany Cuevas
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Using the ecological systems theory, this study highlights the significant impact the political climate in the United States (i.e., anti-immigrant sentiments and violence) has on undocumented Latinx parents’ engagement in their children’s education. Drawing from a larger qualitative, interview-based study that explored how undocumented Latinx parents were involved and engaged in their children’s postsecondary access and success (Cuevas, 2019; 2020), this study focuses on undocumented parents’ experiences and processing of the 2016 Presidential Election. Findings illustrate how the explicit racist, anti-immigrant, and nativist narratives then-Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump campaigned under and won forced undocumented Latinx parents to (re)evaluate how …

What We Owe Our Students: The Good Place, Pedagogy, And The Architecture Of Engaged Learning, Shala Mills, Darrell Hamlin
Political Science Faculty Publications
Pedagogy is the architecture of a learning environment. The discipline of philosophy has often operated according to a pedagogy of conversation, clarity, and reflection, certainly since the era of Socratic dialogue in the streets of Athens. We argue that The Good Place occupies that space, re-setting this pedagogy as an architecture of learning through entertainment associated with ultimate matters of eternal disposition. A critical character driving conversation, clarity, and reflection across four seasons of the story’s arc is a philosopher – doomed by their own indecisive flaws – who teaches deep understanding of ethical development through a variety of relevant …

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, has swiftly infected millions of people since it was first identified in late 2019. While much remains unknown about the virus, it is increasingly clear that many survivors (including children and adolescents) struggle with ongoing symptoms for months after they receive a negative test.
The National Institutes of Health recently started using the term “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) infection,” and we encourage its use because the term more accurately refers to the symptoms and complications experienced after the virus is no longer detected via testing.
Many PASC symptoms resemble persistent symptoms …

Wellbeing
This rapid evaluation of core Life Education programs conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in June 2021 is an independent investigation that demonstrates the evidence base underpinning Life Education programs in primary schools Australia-wide. It presents a national snapshot by drawing upon existing Life Education-specific evaluation data, existing ACER student wellbeing data, and accepted best practice in the field of student health and wellbeing education. The project addressed the key evaluation questions: How are core Life Education programs underpinned by evidence-based best practice, and how are core Life Education programs impacting primary-aged student wellbeing outcomes that align …
