This chapter investigates poverty and social welfare among China’s minority groups. Focusing on the Zhuang, Manchu, Hui, Miao, and Uygur populations, China’s five largest minority groups, as well as other minorities in the aggregate, this chapter will begin by providing an introduction to the classification of ethnic groups in China. We consider the relationship of this classification scheme to the concept of indigenous populations, and develop working definitions of minority status and ethnic group for use in the chapter. Authors examine the proportion of undergraduate applications, admissions, and enrollments preceding, during, and after Proposition 209 while accounting for the relative growth in University of California eligibility for underrepresented minorities (URMs). They employed standard deviation analyses to measure dispersion of the URMs to non-URMs. Results suggest that "disparate impact" towards URMs persists, the magnitude is large, and affirmative action alone is insufficient to ensure an equitable admissions process.

Effects Of A Rape Awareness Program On College Women: Increasing Bystander Efficacy And Willingness To Intervene., John D. Foubert, Jennifer Langhinrichsen-Rohling

An experimental study evaluated the efficacy of a sexual assault riskr eduction program on 279 college women that focused on learning characteristics of male perpetrators and teaching bystander intervention techniques. After seeing The Women’s Program, participants reported significantly greater bystander efficacy and significantly greater willingness to help than before seeing the program. Participants outperformed a control group. Rape myth acceptance also declined among program participants. Implications for rape awareness programming are discussed.

Seven months after seeing The Men’s Program, a commonly used rape prevention program, 248 first-year college men responded to four openended questions concerning whether or not the program impacted their attitudes or behavior, particularly regarding alcohol related sexual assault. Two thirds of participants reported either attitude or behavior change during the preceding academic year due to the program’s effects or that the program reinforced their current beliefs, with many describing specific incidents of either intervening to prevent a rape, or stopping themselves from engaging in risky behavior.

Problematic behavioral issues involving men have been well documented in the published discourse on college men and masculinities. Yet, empirical explanations as to why these issues persist and what educators can do to address them are largely absent from this discourse. Shared findings that emerged from two grounded theory studies of college men’s gender identity development are presented in this article. Based on these findings, recommendations for supporting college men’s gender identity development are offered.

College Men’S Conceptualizations Of Masculinities And Contextual Influences: Toward A Conceptual Model, Frank Harris

Based on a grounded theory study involving 68 male undergraduates, a conceptual model of the meanings college men ascribe to masculinities is proposed in this article. The participants equated masculinities with “being respected,” “being confident and self-assured,” “assuming responsibility,” and “embodying physical prowess.” Contextual factors that influenced these meanings are also reflected in the model. Using the model as a guiding framework, recommendations for supporting the gender identity development of college men and implications for future studies of masculinities in college contexts are offered.

This paper focuses on the theoretical foundation of second language (L2) learning motivation from a Vygotskian Activity Theory (AT) perspective. In general, previous L2 motivation research adopted either psychometric or sociological approaches, which have not fully considered the mediational process between individual learners and their meaningful environments. Since L2 motivation reflects learners’ histories and sociocultural contexts, it is crucial to approach this from an AT perspective. What Do Students Feel In School And How Do We Measure Them?: Examining The Psychometric Properties Of The S-Aeq-F., Ronnel B. King

The objective of this study was to examine the reliability and construct validity of the Short Version of the Academic Emotions Questionnaire for Filipinos (S-AEQ-F) which is an adaptation of the Academic Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ; Pekrun, Goetz, & Perry, 2005). The S-AEQ-F measures eight discrete academic emotions in the learning context: anger, anxiety, boredom, enjoyment, hope, hopelessness, pride, and shame. Filipino high school students (N = 1,121) completed the S-AEQ-F. Language policy implementation is a complex, multilayered process that produces both planned and unplanned outcomes. Understanding the policy implementation process can be achieved by identifying the agents, layers, and processes of language planning and policy activities, analyzing the layers independently, and examining the relationships among the layers. With respect to deaf education policy, such a multidimensional approach calls for attention to federal, state, and district guidelines as well as to how individuals act as policy-implementing agents when determining appropriate educational contexts for deaf students. A Little Now For A Lot Later: A Look At A Texas Advanced Placement Incentive Program, Clement (Kirabo) Jackson

The Texas Advanced Placement Incentive Program pays both students and teachers for passing grades on Advanced Placement (AP) exams. The program was implemented in schools serving primarily low-income, minority populations. Using a difference-in-differences strategy, I find that program adoption is associated with increased AP course enrollment and AP exam taking. Moreover, the program is associated with an increase in students scoring above 1100/24 on the SAT/ACT, and an increase in students matriculating in college. I find no evidence that the rewards distorted behaviors in undesirable ways. I present empirical evidence that teachers and students were not simply aiming to maximize …

Do Students Benefit From Attending Better Schools?: Evidence From Rule-Based Student Assignments In Trinidad And Tobago, Clement (Kirabo) Jackson

In Trinidad and Tobago students are assigned to secondary schools after fifth grade based on achievement tests, leading to large differences in the school environments to which students of differing initial levels of achievement are exposed. This paper uses instrumental variables based on the discontinuities created by the assignment mechanism, and exploits rich data which include the students’ test scores at entry and secondary school preferences to address self-selection bias. I find that attending a better school has large positive effects on examination performance at the end of secondary school. The effects are about twice as large for girls than …

Research on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) has documented the positive impact of these institutions on Black students. Such research has shown that Blacks experience positive academic and social outcomes and a disproportionate number of students who graduate from HBCUs attend graduate or professional schools. Notwithstanding, over the years, there has been an increase in the number of Blacks attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs) over HBCUs.
