Book Review: The Role Of Religion In 21st-Century Public Schools, Amy Lynn Dee
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "Jones and Sheffield have collected essays that speak to a broad range of interests surrounding the topic of religion in public schools. From Jones’s commentary on the emotional underpinnings and historical context of the role of God in classrooms of children, to an account of the limitations of the establishment clause, and past a couple of reports on prayer in schools, the work takes readers through a course of chapters that touch upon many of the themes most popular in arguments about religion in school. Twelve unique chapters written by a diverse group of scholars grant the collection a …
Conference Participation And Publishing (Chapter Eight Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Ph.D. In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Two clear marks of a good scholar or doctoral student are published pieces of research (articles, essays, reviews, etc.) and active participation in academic conferences (presenter, chair, respondent, etc.). Especially for graduate students, the research experience can be very isolated and have a minimal impact without attention to such avenues of dialogue and interaction. Also, practically speaking, when the time comes for the job search, a demonstration of such activity often shows that the prospective professor is a real participant of and contributor to the field of biblical studies. We will begin by discussing how to get involved in conferences.

In this edited transcript of a panel at the Society of Biblical Literature (November 23, 2009, Boston, Massachusetts), five Bible scholars give brief presentations on various challenges and opportunities encountered when teaching academic biblical studies courses online in both undergraduate and theological education contexts. Each presentation is followed by questions from the audience and discussion. Topics include: a typology of different approaches to online teaching, advantages and disadvantages of online compared to face-to-face classrooms (for both students and faculty), opportunities for imaginative exercises online, the advantages of online threaded discussions, and the joys and pitfalls of bringing your course into …

Excerpt: "Dr. Alcantara offers us some significant insights that deserve both careful consideration and further discussion. Of primary importance, in my view, is his observation "that the humanities have lost their relevance." He attributes this loss of relevance, in part, to several shifts in educational methodology which have taken place since the middle of the twentieth century. So, instead of being seen as culturally central the humanities have been relegated to a minor role within culture generally and academia in particular. He goes on to observe that Christian higher education can choose this path, which relegates the humanities to a …

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "George Fox University is owned by Northwest Yearly Meeting, which appoints all its trustees. Four-sevenths of these must be Friends, and this relationship keeps the institution close to its parent religious body. This being the case, a high degree of interaction exists between Northwest Yearly Meeting and the university, and this relationship is felt to be mutually beneficial. While the number of Friends students in the traditional undergraduate program has remained between 74 and 145 over the past three decades or more (making up between 4 and 15 percent of the traditional undergraduate population), aspects of Quaker identity are …
“The Grand Experiment:” Modeling Adult Learning With Adult-Ministry Students, Laura Simmons
“The Grand Experiment:” Modeling Adult Learning With Adult-Ministry Students, Laura Simmons
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Adult-learning theory challenges faculty to adapt their teaching to certain characteristics of adult learners, including self-direction: if adults direct the bulk of their lives outside of school, so should they be permitted to direct their own educational experiences. To what extent is self-directed learning an optimal, or even realistic, methodology for seminary teaching? Does it matter what subjects we are teaching? This essay details an experiment with self-directed learning in a seminary ministry class: what worked; what might be altered before experimenting again with this teaching methodology; how it challenges our view of ourselves as faculty to teach in this …

Colleges routinely send teams across cultural and economic lines to serve other communities. The returning from any cross-cultural experience is laced with dissonance. This article hopes to provide paradigms to assist making these trips a more significant educational experience. Using Mannoia 's description of how learning takes place, we perceive that all aspects of the educational experience can become tools for creating learning. Short-term cross-cultural trips have the potential for being one of the most formative pedagogical experiences of a student's college career. The tools presented here should assist them to transform the event into a significant l(fe experience.
Can A True Faith-Based Education Be Delivered Online?, Kaye Shelton, George Saltsman, Jekabs Bikis
Can A True Faith-Based Education Be Delivered Online?, Kaye Shelton, George Saltsman, Jekabs Bikis
Faculty Publications - College of Business
Can a faith-based education be as effective when delivered online as when it is delivered face-to-face? An in-depth look at the early adopters of the online technology reveals that it can be if the Christian university commits itself to developing an online learning community and to interweaving faith principles into crucial areas of its online program. The three key areas of faith integration upon which hinges the success of such programs are the integration of faith into course material, faith integration in the relationships among students, and faith integration in the faculty student relationships. Consistent attention to these three areas …

Reducing The Identity Crisis In Doctor Of Ministry Education, Charles J. Conniry
Reducing The Identity Crisis In Doctor Of Ministry Education, Charles J. Conniry
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
By ATS description, the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree properly belongs to the larger and more diverse family of degrees called “professional doctorate.” This article looks to the praxis-centered nature of professional doctorates as a means of addressing the identity crisis facing D.Min. education amidst the (ubiquitous) influences of the Wissenschaft model, whose hegemony in Western institutions over the last 150 years has worked to sustain an impassable rift between matters “academic” and “professional.” I begin by discussing the challenge that many classically trained theological educators face when teaching in programs that have a distinctively professional focus, such as that …

Review Of James Tunstead Burtchaell's The Dying Of The Light: The Disengagement Of Colleges And Universities From Their Christian Churches, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
The thesis that colleges founded by churches eventually cut the cord and drift into secularity is no longer news in discussions of American higher education. And for that reason, one would hardly expect to enjoy yet another repetition of the thesis, especially one running over 800 pages. But James Burtchaell combines careful scholarship in primary sources such as faculty minutes and institutional histories with unpretentious, witty writing to present a highly readable treatment of the old theme. Many books that follow this thesis focus on the mass exodus of Protestant colleges from their churches in the second half of the …

The Faith-Learning Integration Movement In Christian Higher Education: Slogan Or Substance?, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
The challenge of thinking Christianly in a secular world is a favorite topic of discussion among Christian scholars, especially among those of evangelical persuasion. But what does it mean to integrate faith and learning? The concept is fraught with semantic and conceptual ambiguity. Through a historical lens, Ken Badley delineates the varieties of meaning implied by the integration-of-faith-and-learning construct as a useful first step in advancing coherent scholarly dialogue. Badley includes a compendium of recommended readings.
