Objective
To improve cultural competency levels of registered nurses on the Mother/Baby unit by educating nurses.
Background
Demographics are shifting in the U.S. with an increase in minority populations. Research has revealed insufficient education or a complete absence of education, resulting in nurses that are not equipped to adequately care for culturally diverse patients.
Methods
The Evidence-Based Practice Improvement (EBPI) Model guided the development and implementation of the project. A cultural competence education module was developed utilizing resources from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Outcomes were measured using a pretest/posttest design tool, the Inventory for Assessing the …

Retention Drivers Post-Pandemic, Maria Charles, Christina Gonzalez
MSN Capstone Projects
The Covid pandemic influenced the world in many ways that we still witness a need for recovery. One significant concern that remains apparent is the culture change within the healthcare system. This study is directed to cover only one aspect of this culture change but remains to be a very significant topic for the nursing workforce (AHC Media, 2021). Even though we have managed to find a downward trend of Covid cases, the pandemic has devastated nursing retention to well established facilities. There is currently an exodus of nurses in high acuity departments or simply bedside nursing entirely. This causes …
Nursing Instructors Preparing Nursing Students To Cope With Distractions When Administering Medications: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study, Michael Thurman Frazier
Nursing Instructors Preparing Nursing Students To Cope With Distractions When Administering Medications: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study, Michael Thurman Frazier
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic qualitative study was to discover and describe how nursing instructors teach nursing students to cope with interruptions and distractions while administering medication. The hermeneutic phenomenology approach is appropriate for discovering what nursing instructors teach their students about distraction in the classroom, simulation laboratory, and clinical setting. The study’s guiding theory was Kolb’s experiential learning theory. Nursing instructors from associate and bachelor’s degree programs from across the United States were recruited to participate in this study. The participants completed questionnaires about medication administration instruction, expanding on their answers in semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. All participants had the …

Dnp Final Report: Implementation Of An Electronic Clinical Placement System For Improving Faculty Workflow And Accreditation Compliance, Janice R. Hawes
DNP Final Reports
Healthcare today is continually evolving and requires healthcare providers to coordinate and work together to provide quality care. Among healthcare changes is the increasing expansion of technological improvements assisting in mainstreaming processes. In the academic setting, these changes are currently needed to help improve faculty workflow and assist in regulatory compliance. The purpose of this paper is to discover if implementing technology in a clinical nursing setting through an evidence-based practice approach will improve nursing faculty workload and aid in accreditation compliance. The design and methodology for this project were developed using the Iowa model of evidence-based practice, the Donabedian …

Driving Healthcare Access: Mobile Health Clinics As A Vehicle To Address Health Inequities, Ethel Ulrich, Angela Malone, Patrick Dineen, Dana Sanneman
Faculty Works: NUR (2010-2023)
Webinar Description: Mobile Health Clinics have demonstrated an ability to address health inequities while cutting overall medical costs. Delivering care into the heart of a community reduces barriers such as lack of transportation, childcare, and income. Many mobile clinics also ensure that language, cultural and insurance barriers are addressed. Effective communication before, during, and after the visit is key to engaging patients and gaining trust. This panel brings together three different models of mobile healthcare delivery to share experiences and lessons learned: Stony Brook Medicines Mobile Mammography program, Mount Sinai South Nassaus COVID-19 Vaxmobile, and Molloy Colleges Community Care mobile …

As a response to the 2020 global reaction to social injustice, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SON&HS) created a task force whose purpose was to develop an actionable Health Equity Statement that will serve as a framework and guide of our teaching learning processes in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This statement articulates the SON & HS resolute stance against racism and all other forms of inequity and unjust treatment; its dedication to understanding, identifying, and actively advocating for changes in the deeply rooted structural inequalities in our healthcare system and society; and its endeavor to …
A Competence-Based Online Learning Video And In-Situ Simulation To Improve Perioperative Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner Self-Efficacy In Responding To Anesthesia Emergencies, Sara Durgerian
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are broadly educated to the population-based role in which they practice. Further education in subspecialties is essential as more NPs are working autonomously in highly specialized care areas.
Problem: In the Department of Anesthesia at a large urban hospital, perioperative anesthesia NPs lack formal training in the subspecialty of anesthesia, which contributed to a lack of self-efficacy when responding to anesthesia emergencies.
Methods: An asynchronous multimodal brief instructional video accompanied by an in-situ simulation of an anesthesia emergency was developed to increase knowledge and confidence in perioperative anesthesia nurse practitioner response to anesthesia emergencies.
Results: A …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lived Experience Of Students Who Have Failed A Nursing Course: Try Again Or Move On?, Deborah K. Tonelli
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of students after failing a nursing course, resulting in the students either sitting out a semester prior to repeating the course or making the decision not to return to a program at all. The central research question for this study was “what are the lived experiences of students who fail a nursing course?” This study retrospectively examined the failure of nursing students to better understand how they processed the event, gained meaning from the experience, and found supportive measures that were useful in moving forward to the …

Dnp Final Report: An Evidence-Based Hesi Exit Exam Remediation Plan, Nancy Mcclurg
DNP Final Reports
In a small East Texas associate degree nursing program, the average pass rate for the National Council of State Board exam fell and was below both national and state averages for three years. In an effort to identify students who may need extra preparation prior to taking the licensure exam, the college administers the HESI Exit Exam during the last semester of the program. For the last three years, between 28 and 37% of the senior class did not achieve a passing score on the exam. The project’s purpose was to evaluate the effect of a remediation plan which consisted …

Dnp Final Report: Mission Cyborg: An Ebp Project Integrating Hybrid Learning In An Undergraduate Nursing Course, Mary A. Thomas
DNP Final Reports
In modern times it is an expectation of students that technology be incorporated into how they receive their education. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to light how pure reliance on traditional face-to-face (F2F) learning can be detrimental to student learning. Many institutes of higher education had already implemented hybrid/blended learning prior to the pandemic and saw no difference in their NCLEX-RN pass rates. This evidence-based practice project gathered, reviewed, and synthesized evidence in order to determine if implementing different teaching strategies would maintain or improve student performance on both unit exams and end of course exit exams.

Anxiety In Healthcare Actors Post Difficult Topic Healthcare Simulation Based Learning Activity, Sarah Elizabeth Pearce
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Difficult topic healthcare simulation-based learning activities help to prepare healthcare profession students in a manner which is consistent with the experiences they will face in their careers. However, while these types of simulation-based learning activities need to be simulated, little to no research has been conducted regarding the topic of the psychological effect on standardized patients (SP) who participate in these activities within simulation-based learning experiences. The purpose of this study was to provide a quantitative examination, of the anxiety related effects of difficult topic simulation-based learning activities on standardized patients. This study utilized an experimental quantitative post-test only control …

Competing Worlds: The Private Lives Of Women Nurse Students And Gender Equity In Higher Education, Lesley Andrew, Ken Robinson, Leesa Costello, Julie Dare
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020 Society for Research into Higher Education. A longitudinal qualitative study of undergraduate women nursing students demonstrated the profound and pervasive influence of the heterosexual intimate relationship on their university engagement and achievement. Hitherto, the importance of women’s private lives have been underappreciated in the arenas of student equity and retention. The study showed that traditional ideas of gender held within the intimate relationship were highly detrimental to student autonomy and capacity to engage, and that the university’s organisation and delivery of the curriculum exacerbated the situation. Participants made personal sacrifices, which, while enabling continuation of their studies, were …
