Insights Into Academic Librarian Leadership Using The Bolman And Deal Leadership Orientation Framework, Colleen T. Boff Nov 2015

Insights Into Academic Librarian Leadership Using The Bolman And Deal Leadership Orientation Framework, Colleen T. Boff

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Are librarians prepared to lead academic libraries into the increasingly complex future of higher education? Results will be shared from a survey using the Bolman and Deal leadership orientation framework (1990, 1991, 1992, 2003) to explore how academic library leaders and managers in Ohio and Michigan prefer to interpret and solve problems. Consisting of four frames, librarians can view situations through a structural lens (involving policies, rules and organizational charts), a human resources lens (tending to the needs of employees), the political lens (competing for power and scarce resources) or the symbolic lens (storytelling, traditions and symbols). Research conducted in …

Open Your Research Without Opening Your Wallet, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

Open scholarship promotes sharing and collaboration, increases readership, and amplifies impact. It is gaining traction as institutions, professional associations, and funding agencies encourage or require broad sharing of research results. Yet many authors believe that the only way to open their work is to pay publishers thousands of dollars for the privilege. Luckily for us, that just isn’t the case. Come hear about a range of ways to open your research without paying for the privilege! Lunch provided. (Limited seating, RSVP to jwertzbe@gettysburg.edu)

Reframing The Academic Research Library In The U.S.: Perceptions Of Change From Library Leaders, Victoria L. Stuart Nov 2015

Reframing The Academic Research Library In The U.S.: Perceptions Of Change From Library Leaders, Victoria L. Stuart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During the past five years (2010-2015), U.S. universities experienced a simultaneous downturn in financial support along with rapid changes in technology and increased demand for accountability. Academic libraries, among the most central and visible units in the university system, were often at the forefront of financial cutbacks and increased pressure to demonstrate both unit effectiveness and closer alignment with the overall institutional mission. Little research existed to document academic libraries’ changes during this volatile period in history, or how the role of the academic library as part of the university system evolved during this period. Through interviews with the library …

Data Informed Learning: A Next Phase Data Literacy Framework For Higher Education, Clarence Maybee, Lisa Zilinski Nov 2015

Data Informed Learning: A Next Phase Data Literacy Framework For Higher Education, Clarence Maybee, Lisa Zilinski

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This poster was presented at the Association for Information Science and Technology’s (ASIS&T) Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO on November 9, 2015. Accessing, using and managing data is increasingly recognized as an important learning outcome in higher education. Approaches to data literacy have typically been informed by information literacy. New approaches to information literacy have emerged that address how information is used in the different disciplinary contexts in which people learn and work. Successful approaches to data literacy will also need to address contextual concerns. Informed learning is an approach to information literacy that purposefully addresses contextual concerns by …

Co-Curricular Tools For Reflective Practice: Depaul's Strategies For Critical Reflection, Jennifer O'Brien, Lynn Copp, Lauri Dietz, Heather Jagman

Heather Jagman

Are you looking for new ways to encourage faculty, staff, and student employees to become more effective reflective practitioners? Inspired by theorists such as David Kolb who asserts that reflection is the bridge to learning being transferred from one context to another, we've learned at DePaul that creating a university-wide culture of reflection requires co-curricular collaboration. By learning from and reinforcing each other's reflective practices, our aim is to help maximize the transfer of learning across curricular and co- curricular contexts. Join us for an interactive session where the facilitators will model reflective activities that foster professional learning, growth, and …

“I Am More Productive In The Library Because It’S Quiet”: Commuter Students In The College Library, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale Nov 2015

“I Am More Productive In The Library Because It’S Quiet”: Commuter Students In The College Library, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale

Publications and Research

This article discusses commuter students’ experiences with the academic library, drawn from a qualitative study at the City University of New York. Undergraduates at six community and baccalaureate colleges were interviewed to explore how they fit schoolwork into their days, and the challenges and opportunities they encountered. Students identified physical and environmental features that informed their ability to successfully engage in academic work in the library. They valued the library as a distraction-free place for academic work, in contrast to the constraints they experienced in other places—including in their homes and on the commute.

Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection Of Resources, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Vicki Rosen Nov 2015

Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection Of Resources, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Vicki Rosen

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

In the Spring 2015 issue of Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal, Kimberly Connor described building an Ignatian Pedagogy Faculty Learning Community at the University of San Francisco. One outcome of the FLC was to gather and make easily available a collection of resources on Jesuit education and the IPP (Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm). In this issue, two USF Gleeson Library/Geschke Center librarians, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Digital Collections Librarian, and Vicki Rosen, Distance Learning Services Librarian, describe creating Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection of Resources, an openly accessible database available through the USF Library website, using the FLC resources …

Building Bridges For Student Success, Cindy Gruwell Nov 2015

Building Bridges For Student Success, Cindy Gruwell

Library Faculty Publications

This book chapter describes the collaborative efforts of an academic librarian and nursing faculty in the development of a robust health sciences-focused information literacy instruction workshop. After several years of “standard” IL sessions, both the librarian and faculty wanted to create a more dynamic, active learning environment for students enrolled in the nursing research and evidence-based practice course. In addition, the author reflects on the challenges and successes of working with faculty when a nursing department is undergoing programmatic and curriculum changes.
