This children's play is one I wrote in English but translated into Haitian Kreyol with the help of Joel Theodat. It's about a rabbit who loves peas and steals them from a little girl's garden; that is, until she captures him! We did a script-in-hand reading of the play at the Creole Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in July, 2014.

Moving Physical Education Beyond The Gymnasium: Creating Activity Permissible Classrooms, John R. Kilbourne
Moving Physical Education Beyond The Gymnasium: Creating Activity Permissible Classrooms, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
As school leaders charged with promoting healthy and active lifestyles, physical education professionals can extend their expertise to school classrooms by helping to facilitate the creation of more active and engaging teaching and learning areas. These teaching and learning areas include such moving innovations as exercise stability balls as chairs, fixed-height stand-up desks, Steelcase Node chairs, and Steelcase buoy chairs.

Concerned about the rising rates of obesity and increasing health care costs in Japan, the government passed a law that requires local governments and companies to measure the waistlines of Japanese residents between the ages of 40 and 74 (56 million waistlines, 44% of the population of Japan). Those exceeding the government limits (Established by the Japanese International Diabetes Foundation), 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women, will be given diet and exercise advice. If, after three months of intervention residents fail to lose weight, they will be steered toward further re-education programs. Local governments and companies who …

Activity Permissible Classrooms: The Next Revolution In Teaching & Learning, John R. Kilbourne
Activity Permissible Classrooms: The Next Revolution In Teaching & Learning, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
For more than twenty years I have been teaching college and university lecture/discussion courses in the typical classroom setting. The classrooms have usually consisted of thirty to forty chairs with fixed attached desks organized in neat rows, all facing front. There was little opportunity to alter the configuration because of the confined space, time, and the other classes that preceded and followed mine. In the fall of 2008 this all changed when I began to restructure my teaching space to be a more activity permissible classroom.

What's to be done? Colleges can bridge the divide and promote more efficient use of people and resources by putting greater trust in faculty at the department or unit level. After all, these are the people who know the subjects and content best. Let's work to remove the unreality distortion field of higher education. If faculty have an idea on Friday, let them put it into effect on Monday.

While societal and cultural expectations bend towards positive schooling experiences, black boys are falling short in terms of graduating from high school—and for that matter—college!

As we work to promote physical activity and health, I think it is vitally important to extend ourselves beyond our schools and classrooms. This includes our faith communities.

Undergraduate research (UR) programs attract highly motivated students who often continue on to graduate/professional schools but may lack necessary information literacy skills. Collaboration with UR programs provides librarians new opportunities to help students develop these skills and work with specialized collections in the context of a research experience. In this webinar, librarians and UR administrators share their experiences in forging collaborations based on UR and library training resources, explain how information literacy skills programming has been embedded into UR, and demonstrate how this partnership has led to greater visibility of library services, collections and UR among all undergraduates.

What Does The Popularity Of The Hunger Games Say About Our Society?, John R. Kilbourne

Have we become part of a group that as Katniss’ friend Gale Hawthorne says in “The Hunger Games,” and Senator Gracchus from ancient Rome puts forward, “We want a good show, that’s all we want.”

Sharpening The Mind Through Movement: Stand-Up Desks, John R. Kilbourne

For nearly twenty years I have been teaching courses in sport studies in the typical college or university classroom setting. The classrooms usually consisted of thirty to forty chairs with attached desks organized in neat rows all facing front. There was little opportunity to alter the configuration because of the confined space, time, and the other classes that preceded and followed mine. In the fall of 2008 this all changed when I introduced table top desks and exercise stability balls as options for seats. Researching the effectiveness of the exercise ball on student attention and focus I discovered that 98% …

In Search Of The Meaning Of Games In Life: A Journey To The Arctic Of Norway, John Kilbourne
In Search Of The Meaning Of Games In Life: A Journey To The Arctic Of Norway, John Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
Throughout history the games we have played have been a testament about who we were, and are. From early Inuit bone and hunting games, to the gladiator contests of Ancient Rome, to the modern American game of baseball, the games we play have served as a statement of and a rehearsal for the life-world of that period and place. By reconnecting with and understanding the games of our past, we can build meaningful bridges between our past and present, and hopefully gain a better understanding of the meaning and importance of the modern games we play. The aforesaid are timely …
Catapulting The Walls Of Higher Education, John R. Kilbourne
Catapulting The Walls Of Higher Education, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
As we move further into the twenty-first century administrators and faculty members of colleges and universities must rethink their approach to valuing and sharing the research and scholarship that is created at their respective institutions. The fences and walls must not only be catapulted over, they must be removed. The fences and walls can be removed by valuing research and scholarship when it is presented via the popular press and, by teaching faculty members the steps they can take to move their research and scholarship to a wider audience. Our collective well-being can only be enhanced by such movement.

A student-run public relations firm can offer a variety of benefits for an undergraduate program in which there are limited resources for professional involvement by students. The article is a case study that profiles a student-run firm launched in conjunction with a capstone course in a journalism department. Specific learning and professional development goals were established for students, the department, and for clients served by the firm.
