Scaffolding Facilitates Inter-School Collaborative Learning: A Case Study In China, Xiaoying Feng Jun 2012

Scaffolding Facilitates Inter-School Collaborative Learning: A Case Study In China, Xiaoying Feng

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Inter-school collaborative learning (ICL) has significant meaning for bridging the educational gap between urban and rural schools. This study examines the effectiveness of three scaffolding conditions on learning outcomes in an ICL environment. One urban primary school and one rural school were selected to participate in the inter-school collaboration. Three 6th grade classes in each school were randomly assigned to one of three scaffolding conditions: lowest-coercion scaffolding (class A), highest-coercion scaffolding (class B), or adaptive scaffolding (class C). Detailed scaffolds were designed and developed to support ICL from 8 dimensions, including 18 strategies and 27 scaffolding tools. Both process data …

The Impact Of Outcome Intentions On Reading And Multitasking Performances, Lin Lin, Adrian Robertson, Jennifer Lee

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

This study investigated undergraduate students’ reading comprehension between two outcome intentions and three media multitasking conditions. The two outcome intentions were for accuracy and completion. The three multitasking conditions included silence, video background, and video test conditions. One hundred thirty university students participated in the study. Every participant completed two sets of reading, with two different intentions and in two different conditions. Results showed that the participants performed better in reading (a) when they strived for completion than for accuracy, (b) that the addition of an unobtrusive video (video background) did not inhibit the processing of the primary reading task, …

Better Learning Though Augmented Reality: Ar In The Classroom, Alex Manning, Russell Powers, Xan Pedisich

Anthós

This paper reports on the development of an augmented reality (AR) game that immerses students virtually and in their physical environment to view PSU in different ways. Players learn historical information, interact with contributions from previous players, and use language to describe what they see, discovering new and rediscovering old hotspots. By producing knowledge through activity and learning through action, students are engaged in and shape their own education in real scenarios instead of through book work alone. Player experience and dynamics are recorded and assessed with a view toward creating more powerful learning environments.
