How Technology Has Affected The English Language Learning Classroom, Natalie Bursztynsky
Technology Essay Contest Winners
English language learners are a growing percentage of students in today’s classrooms. These students’ educational needs will continue to grow, but so will technology. Multiple technologies today can be incorporated into the classroom, and teachers can be comforted in the fact that there will always be something to keep them one step ahead in the English language learning classroom.

Student Perceptions Of Digital Textbooks In A College Nursing Program, Alan D. Eno
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
The purpose of this research was to study the use of digital textbooks in a small liberal arts college. The research was a mixed methods descriptive study using a pre and post survey to determine student perceptions of the technology. Findings indicated that students needed training in the installation and use of digital textbooks. Findings also indicated the need for further research into what students understand about using digital textbooks. Recommendations are for the college to institute training sessions to teach students how to use the digital textbooks.
Technology Use In A First-Year Composition Program, Estee Natee Beck
Technology Use In A First-Year Composition Program, Estee Natee Beck
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study examines how instructors view and work with technology in a firstyear composition program at a four-year, public university in central Appalachia. Six interview questions were developed for this study as a means to explore the instructor’s definition of technology, level of use (functional, critical, and or rhetorical), difficulties using technology, pedagogy, and socioeconomics of the student population. Using qualitative methods to find patterns in the data, correlations were present among participant responses with functional uses, access, and socioeconomics. Educators primarily use technology functionally for the purpose of creating linear-based essays; have broad access to technology, but do not …

Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Publications & Research
Regrettably, most American students experience STEM learning as an exclusive, individual, theoretical and “formulaic” enterprise. By decoupling STEM education from the human experience, we have distorted the essential nature of the scientific enterprise and advanced instrumentalist and utilitarian rationales for pursuing STEM careers—global economic superiority and technological competition.

(b) What are the perceived levels of abilities of the middle school principal in regard to computer and keyboarding skills? (c) To what extent do differences exist in the skill levels of principals in demographic groupings? (d) To what extent are applications and programs used by middle school principals? (e) Is there a difference in …

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations
This session from the 2009 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) identifies technologies for next generation online writing centers, describing customized solutions for online tutoring and the potential for making these into open-source technologies for other centers. Presenters will discuss new OWL technologies, definitions for changing technologies, and OWL pedagogy and praxis, as well as usability, development, and sharing/open-sourcing of online tutoring technologies. The issues raised in this panel are the result of an OWL Technology Summit held in 2007 where representatives from eleven institutions met to explore trends in online tutoring technology development. This panel brings forward key …

Cornerstone 1 Reports : Expansion and Enhancements of the Thinkfinity Platform
The Pace Computer Learning Center has been involved in helping teachers learn to integrate technology using Internet resources since 1997, when, under a grant from the then Bell Atlantic Corporation, over 900 teachers were trained over a three year period.
Since that initial project, PCLC has continued this work with New York City and Westchester private and public schools. Most recently, funding has come from the Facilitator Center, an organization serving non-public schools in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
This pilot project was conceived as a way in which PCLC could use its experience and expertise to present …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adult education technology program at a chartered alternative adult education center in Florida. The adult education center had a low rate of students passing the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). This study examined the impact of the use of computer technology in an effort to improve student learning in mathematics, reading, and science. Computers at the institution were used by all students for tutorials to prepare them for the FCAT and to obtain a high school diploma. The research questions for this study were as follows: 1. Computer-supported coordinated care uses technology to aid the network of people who support an elder living at home. The authors conducted interviews with people involved in the care of elders to identify their needs and subsequently conducted an in situ evaluation of a technology probe to study how a CSCC system might help satisfy these needs. The authors used these results to identify challenges faced by people caring for elders and offer guidelines for designers of coordinated care technologies.

Video Tape Recording: What It Is And How It Can Be Used In The Schools, Donald Bryant Frankhauser
Graduate Student Research Papers
I feel the video tape recorder will have a very definite place in the schools. It will be one of our audiovisual aids, just as television, the 16mm. projector and others. It is a tool with unlimited possibilities and a great deal of flexibility. It is a device that can and will be used by teachers at all levels of teaching. It is not an instrument to take the place of the teacher, but, like all audiovisual equipment, is a tool to help the teacher do a more effective job.
