Horace Mann's Vision In Action: Bridgewater Normal School's Female Teachers, Casey Rekowski

Undergraduate Review

Through a close reading of Horace Mann’s archival material including official documents and speeches, this paper argues that Horace Mann expanded women’s social roles in the nineteenth century. Whether he intended such an outcome or not, Horace Mann’s agenda to improve common schools increased American women’s educational and professional opportunities. Drawing upon the popular ideology of the day, Mann articulated a detailed rationale for placing women, as “natural teachers” at the center of public education in Massachusetts when he became the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837. Series consists of letters received by James Carpenter during his tenure as director of the Training School at Western Kentucky University. The letters reflect his work with local school districts, the Kentucky Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa and colleagues at WKU. Mr. Carpenter filed these letters in reverse chronological order in notebooks. That order has been maintained. Also included is the 1966 report by Paz Ramos entitled "The Internship Program in College Administration at Western Kentucky State College."

The lived experiences of women higher education Chief Information Officers (CIOs) were investigated and documented in this qualitative study. Three women higher education CIOs provided their perspectives on the opportunities and obstacles encountered as they pursued and achieved their current positions. These women's stories were gathered under a conceptual framework focusing on the intersection of applicable elements from gendered organizational theory, feminist standpoint theory, and occupational jurisdiction. Methods of overcoming obstacles and facilitating opportunities were discussed in relation to their lived lives and experiences. A professional development program with built-in follow up support mechanism was offered during years 2004-06 in selected districts of Pakistan. The training reportedly had sustained impact on teachers’ attitude toward teaching.

This paper investigates the role of follow up support as an element of sustainable teacher development, and the part of teachers’ learning they could have implemented over the period after the end of project. Data was collected through classroom observations, interviews with these teachers and the head teachers of these schools, and analysis of lesson plans and reflective journals maintained by the teachers.

This study developed and validated a diagnostic health education achievement test for adult learners in Anambra State. Two research questions and a research hypothesis guided the study. The instrument was pretested. Following the result of the pilot test, a total of 96 multiple choice test items were administered to 1, 342 adult learners. The analysis of the data was carried out using item analysis. Kuder-Richardson formula ‘21’ was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. Finally, t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Based on the results, some recommendations were made.

Teaching practice is the core component of all pre-service teacher education programs. Through teaching practice, a novice teacher is assumed to have inculcated a supposedly viable pedagogic experience to transfer the core competency of the subject knowledge to students in real classroom situation.

Exploring Complexities Of Multiple Identities Of Lesbians In A Black College Environment, Lori Patton Davis, Symone Simmons

Experiences of first year female Black students who self-identified themselves as lesbian and attended a historically Black university are examined. A reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity and the Multidimensional Identity Model were used to establish the framework for this study. Overall the study provided a current identity status for participants which included race, gender, and sexual orientation. Results from semi-structured interviews revealed three themes related to how participants made sense of their identity internally and in relation to external expectations and influences.

The purpose of this article is to equip housing professionals at public colleges and universities to adequately handle the challenges related to the religious expression of residents and resident assistants living in the residence halls. To that end, case law and other legal principles are discussed to provide guidance related to the freedom of religious expression within residential environments at public institutions. Furthermore, the fear of offending students is addressed in an effort to encourage productive dialogue about religious differences.
