The New Writing Series, Spring 2012, English & National Poetry Foundation

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

New Writing Series programming has always been guided the principles of innovation, collaboration, interdisciplinary, and diversity. From the start we have also worked hard to maximize the impact of real-time events within the rapidly-changing new media context. For example, the NWS blog has received more than 55,500 page views since its creation in fall2006 (up from 38,000 this time last year). Our Facebook group, created in the fall of 2007, has more than 140 members and reaches many more people with event and Series information. The Flickr page on which we document events has received roughly 44,700 views to date. …

ETSU Faculty Works

To the Editor. Recently, Dr. DiPiro published an article in the Journal1 that discussed several aspects pertinent to the process of faculty recruitment, emphasizing an individual's “fit” within the culture of the hiring institution. Considering The Shift In Lecturer Roles As Key Skills And Competencies Are Fostered In Higher Education Students Today, Frances Boylan, Muireann Okeeffe, Mary O'Rawe

Conference papers

The need to develop the skills in students for smooth progression from higher education into employment are even more important in today’s economic climate. Students need to be increasingly adaptable and entrepreneurial in their ability to locate and create employment opportunities. Consequently, efforts are afoot throughout the higher education sector to develop measures to ‘broaden the curriculum’ addressing the holistic development of the student. In an attempt to prepare these students to manage their work and learning throughout all stages of their lives, lecturers now recognise the importance of fostering key skills and competencies. However, supporting and implementing these measures …

Final Student Report Of The Campus Climate Focus Group Research Project, Fall 2011, Susan Murray

Faculty Publications, Sociology

The Campus Climate Focus Group Research Project was initiated at the request of the Campus Climate Committee (CCC), a Presidential advisory group composed of faculty, students, administrators, and staff. This study examines campus climate at SJSU based on data collected from thirteen focus groups composed of administrators, faculty, staff, and students. The initial impetus for this study came from findings of the 2006 Campus Climate Survey conducted by the CCC. As is common practice in social science research, this research project was designed as a “follow-up” study to offer a deeper understanding of the survey results (Morgan 1996). The primary …

Adding Value To Graduate Education: The Comprehensive Examination, John L. Lindquist, Samuel E. Wortman, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Virtually all graduate study requirements for MS or PhD degrees include a written comprehensive and an oral exam, the latter most often a presentation of thesis or dissertation results. The written exam takes many forms, but the goals are to test the candidate for technical competence and affirm that the prior program course work has been effective in bringing the candidate to an acceptable level of understanding of the discipline in which she or he has been immersed. Although long accepted as a useful hurdle on the path to a degree, for some exceptional students who have already demonstrated competence …

Using Clickers In Large College Psychology Classes: Academic Achievement And Perceptions, Selma Powell, Carrie Straub, Jacqueline Rodriguez, Barbara Vanhorn

School of Education Articles

This research study explored the effects of the use of clicker technology as a means of formative assessment in large, college introductory psychology courses. Academic achievement, as measured by performance on tests of knowledge, was compared between students who used clickers and students that did not use clickers. There was a significant difference between the two groups, although a small effect was noted. Students using the clickers responded to survey items created to solicit information regarding student perceptions of increased understanding, ability to self-identify content deficits, fun, and financial value of clickers. Data from the survey indicated that the majority …
