The Road To Doctoral Success And Beyond, Veronica Castro, Elda E. Garcia, Javier Cavazos Vela, Alma Castro

Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the experiences of women that lead them to pursue a Ph.D in Counseling, as well a study of their experiences in their doctoral program. The goal of this study is to identify those factors related to women’s academic success. This study applies the resiliency and emotional intelligence (EI) framework to analyze the subjects' experiences. Another construct related to EI and resilience, Antonovsky’s (1987) theory of coherence, is employed to explain the way in which the subjects converted negative external factors into achievement motivation. A three and a half hour …

Unpacking Faculty Engagement: The Types Of Activities Faculty Members Report As Publicly Engaged Scholarship During Promotion And Tenure, Chris R. Glass, Diane M. Doberneck, John H. Schweitzer

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

While a growing body of scholarship has focused on the personal, professional, and organizational factors that influence faculty members’ involvement in publicly engaged scholarship, the nature and scope of faculty publicly engaged scholarship itself has remained largely unexplored. What types of activities are faculty members involved in as publicly engaged scholarship? How does their involvement vary by demographic, type of faculty appointment, or college grouping? To explore these questions, researchers conducted a quantitative content analysis of 173 promotion and tenure documents from a research-intensive, land-grant, Carnegie Classified Community Engagement university and found statistically significant differences for the variables age, number …

Examining Admission Factors In An Mpa Program, William M. Leavitt, John R. Lombard, John C. Morris Jan 2011

Examining Admission Factors In An Mpa Program, William M. Leavitt, John R. Lombard, John C. Morris

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

This article presents an in-depth examination of the validity of the admission factors employed by a NASPAA-accredited MPA program. Admission factors are examined to determine if particular factors, or a set of factors, are most indicative of an applicant’s potential achievement in the MPA program as measured by a student’s final grade point average (GPA) in the program. The study uses truncated regression techniques to analyze student records in order to determine the relative significance of a set of commonly collected admissions information. We find that the best predictor of success in the MPA program, as measured by final GPA …

Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges (Third Edition), Samuel Schuman Jan 2011

Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges (Third Edition), Samuel Schuman

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION The first edition of this monograph appeared in 1988, a year which, depending upon one’s perspective, was either just yesterday or eons ago. At the end of the ‘80s, I could still suggest, with a straight face, that a fully equipped honors office space should have “a computer or a typewriter,” a suggestion that today sounds more appropriate for a museum of antique office machinery than an up-to-date academic office. The handbook was revised in 1998, and that second edition has now had a lifetime of well over a decade. It, too, has come to …

Using Formative Feedback To Support A Blended Learning Programme, Noel Fitzpatrick, Bernadette Burns, Brian Fay Jan 2011

Using Formative Feedback To Support A Blended Learning Programme, Noel Fitzpatrick, Bernadette Burns, Brian Fay

Teaching Fellowships

Formative feedback has been well documented as a means of promoting and engaging learning. Indeed, for effective feedback the timely nature of feedback is essential. This project outlines the development of formative assessment as integral part of a blended learning programme. Using the existing BA Visual Art Programme (Sherkin Island), this project developed, used and evaluated innovative student feedback mechanisms. The project focused on the development of formative feedback for first year modules on the programme with special emphasis placed upon the written elements of the course. The BA in Visual Arts is a majority practice based programme in Fine …

The Correlation Between Attendence And Achievement, Adrian Davis Jan 2011

The Correlation Between Attendence And Achievement, Adrian Davis

Teaching Fellowships

In a global context it is generally accepted that the retention and associated completion rates for first year students is an area for concern in third level institutions. One are of particular interest is the low levels of completion on some degree programmes. Earlier studies of a similar nature have indicated that these students who attend at high levels not only pass examinations but also attain higher grades. Whilst attendance itself is not the cause of learning, even the most basic exposure to new material has a positive effect on learning.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the …

An Examination Of The Use Of Blended Learning To Support Improvement Of Engagement And Retention Of Part-Time Postgraduate Level Students Using Student Edited Podcasts, Deirdre Lawless, Damian Gordon Jan 2011

An Examination Of The Use Of Blended Learning To Support Improvement Of Engagement And Retention Of Part-Time Postgraduate Level Students Using Student Edited Podcasts, Deirdre Lawless, Damian Gordon

Teaching Fellowships

Part time students must content with a large number of logistical factors which may inhibit their ability to attend all required instruction sessions. The vast majority of part-time students are in full –time employment and due to either family or work pressure may be unable to attend all classes. This can have a significant impact on the student learning experience. Students can quickly fall behind, become de-motivated and can increasingly seek deferrals from with examinations or the programme itself. Given the current economic climate it is to be expected that the numbers of students interested in upskilling will be increased …

Developing A Pedagogic Approach To Enhance Student Learning Before, During And After International Work Placement: Teaching Fellowship 11, Frank Cullen Jan 2011

Developing A Pedagogic Approach To Enhance Student Learning Before, During And After International Work Placement: Teaching Fellowship 11, Frank Cullen

Teaching Fellowships

The report commences with a brief overview of the Fellowship research and provides insight into the benefits of mobility. Erasmus mobility is viewed as a means to promote the Department of Culinary Arts in the international culinary arena via the student’s skills and performance. It is clear from this research that the international internships provide exceptional opportunities for students to integrate and learn in different cultural environments. It is argued that this research addresses many of the unanswered issues related to internship before, during and after the experience: issues of knowledge, identity, integration and the student’s personal development. This research …

Get Smart! An Evaluation Of An Initiative In Personal And Professional Development Among First Year Undergraduates, Mary O'Rawe

Teaching Fellowships

The third level learning environment today is characterised by many demand and supply-led challenges. Problems of student engagement, motivation and ability to perform in a third level education environment are well documented, as are the opportunities and challenges posed by new modes of delivery. Knight and York highlight the importance of developing a strong set of personal skills, understandings and personal attributes that make graduates more likely to gain employment and to be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefit themselves, the community and the economy

In response to this complex relationship between the expectations of industry, student and academics …

Higher Education Professional Pilot Faculty Qualifications: Are The Stakes Rising?, David C. Ison Jan 2011

Higher Education Professional Pilot Faculty Qualifications: Are The Stakes Rising?, David C. Ison

Aeronautics, Graduate Studies - Worldwide

"Within the aviation research literature there have been numerous studies that have either included or focused upon the attributes of associated faculty. Although such studies provide compelling data about these individuals, trends or changes in requirements for faculty are not easily identified within the findings. Of particular concern is the fact that credentialization, the escalation of required educational attainment and certification, has been permeating throughout higher education in the United States. It is of interest to see if such pressures are also infiltrating the collegiate aviation environment. Further, data about trends can help future faculty prepare for possible employment, it …

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick Jan 2011

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Unlike current assessment protocols, which emphasize prediction and control—often at the expense of engagement with the unknown, emergent, and new—we explore here our experiences as professors opening to surprise, in pedagogical interactions that have unpredictable outcomes. We imagine and advocate for institutional structures that, rather than predetermining goals and measuring how well we have achieved them, necessitate surprise and strengthen us to respond creatively and liberally to it. Without room for surprise, we argue, education is denied, and distorted by the loss of, one of its central energies: the circulation of the gifts of chance and serendipity.
