Attraction And Machine Learning: Evaluating Msm Attraction Preferences Using Random Forest, Darin Challacombe Mar 2024

Attraction And Machine Learning: Evaluating Msm Attraction Preferences Using Random Forest, Darin Challacombe

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Recent advances in machine learning (broadly) and random forest analysis (specifically) have allowed researchers to examine variables and datasets in previously unknown or unexplored ways. Following a recommendation by Fife and D’Onofrio (2022) to utilize machine learning in the social sciences, I used previously reported attraction data (Challacombe and Perdomo, 2021) on males who have sex with other males (MSM) and applied a random forest analysis against the variables. I also utilized two different programming languages—R and Python—to study the data. While both programming languages provided different data points, the general results were similar. In both studies, the importance of …

Differences In Drinking Patterns In Graduate Students Based On Degree Type, Faith Shank Mar 2024

Differences In Drinking Patterns In Graduate Students Based On Degree Type, Faith Shank

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

Graduate school is accompanied by high levels of stress, as students are faced with various responsibilities (El-Ghoroury et al., 2012; Offstein et al., 2004). However, many graduate students have barriers to mental health services, resulting in the use of maladaptive coping mechanisms, specifically alcohol use (Ayala et al., 2017). Related, professional doctoral students (e.g., MD, OD, JD) tend to engage in problematic drinking, with a range of 33-50% drinking heavily (Organ et al., 2016; Waring et al., 1984). There is limited research examining the drinking patterns of students enrolled in different types of programs. We aimed to examine differences in …

Vigilance And Foraging Behaviors Of Two Sciurid Species Between College Campuses And Urban Environments, Patrick Geyer, Zoe Buffington, Lorelei E. Patrick Mar 2024

Vigilance And Foraging Behaviors Of Two Sciurid Species Between College Campuses And Urban Environments, Patrick Geyer, Zoe Buffington, Lorelei E. Patrick

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

A comparison between the extent that sciurid specimens display vigilance and foraging behaviors on college campuses against specimens within urban environments. Observations of fox squirrels and western gray squirrels were taken from the Squirrel-Net behavioral database used for this project. We found there was a significant difference between the percent vigilance behaviors and foraging behaviors on college campuses compared to urban environments. This suggests that squirrels residing on college campuses are more desensitized to pedestrian activity and foot traffic compared to squirrels that inhabit urban areas.

Opportunities For Maximizing The Dietary Quality Of Fad Diets, Jessica M. Phelan, Jill Joyce, Katherine Bode, Sara K. Rosenkranz Mar 2024

Opportunities For Maximizing The Dietary Quality Of Fad Diets, Jessica M. Phelan, Jill Joyce, Katherine Bode, Sara K. Rosenkranz

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

The quality of American diets, measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), has remained stable and low since 2005. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025 call for research analyzing dietary patterns to determine how guidelines might be altered to increase healthy eating. The present paper seeks to determine the dietary quality of popular fad dietary patterns among Americans. A definition of “fad diet” was created, and Google Trends© was searched for popular diets to determine popular dietary patterns based on the fad diet definition. Finally, eight dietary patterns were identified for inclusion. One-week sample menus were created for each dietary …

The Potential To Be The Most Historic Higher Education Reform Effort Of Our Time: Implementation Of Ab705, Kristina Martinez

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

The Potential to Be the Most Historic Higher Education Reform Effort of Our Time: Implementation of AB705 As a result of California Assembly Bill 705(AB705, 2017) and California Assembly Bill 1705 (AB1705, 2021), most 1st-year students will enroll directly into transfer level math and/or English courses (Baca, 2021; Lopez, 2022; Melguizo et al., 2022; Sims, 2020). Students once placed into remedial coursework before enrolling in transfer level coursework may need more student support services to ensure course completion and retention (Atkins & Beggs, 2017; Baca, 2021; Cook, 2016; Lopez, 2022; Melguizo et al., 2022; Sims, 2020). The recent implementation of …

From Affordable To Equitable: An Analysis Of Affordable Housing As A Solution In A National Shortage, Machelle Cooper Mar 2024

From Affordable To Equitable: An Analysis Of Affordable Housing As A Solution In A National Shortage, Machelle Cooper

Honors Theses

Amid a national shortage of housing, the United States needs housing solutions that both remedy infrastructural concerns imposed by outdated standards of urban development and address a widespread lack of equity across several urban areas. Conventional approaches to public housing have proven ineffective in promoting equitable change within underdeveloped contexts. These areas desire innovative, intentional interventions that adequately address all aspects of their social, economic, and environmental needs that existing patterns of development have neglected for decades. Public and state sentiments regarding areas of concentrated poverty and segregation in urban space must change for a future of equitable housing to …

Pharmacological Interventions Versus Non-Pharmacological Interventions On Pain In Chronic Pain Patients, Harley Page, Olivia Mcswain

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

The study is a comparison experiment that looks at the different types of interventions to treat chronic pain. This study is set at Haysmed Rehabilitation to gather data on adult patients with chronic pain. When studying the interventions used for chronic pain, we found numerous ways of treatment. They are categorized as pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. During the study we found, that an understanding of what is causing the pain and the use of both interventions is the best way to go about treating/managing chronic pain.

Use Of An Electronic Health Record System In The Nursing Education Lab & Simulation Setting, Easlyn Koch Mar 2024

Use Of An Electronic Health Record System In The Nursing Education Lab & Simulation Setting, Easlyn Koch

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Simulation has become a significant component of nursing education in recent years, especially with the increasing demand for high-fidelity simulations. However, nursing education struggles to keep up with the ever-changing healthcare technology, specifically electronic health records (EHR). Integrating EHRs into nursing education in areas such as the lab or simulation settings has the potential to impact overall patient safety, familiarity with similar technology, critical thinking skills, and practice readiness of student nurses. A review of the literature was performed, and it was found that the implementation and integration of an EHR in nursing education has overwhelming effects on overall student …

A Pragmatic Approach To Investigating The Digital Existence Of Food Bank Users, Yaprak Dalat Ward Dr., James Ward Dr., Li-Jen Lester Dr.

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

This study investigated the digital existence of the food bank users in a university town in Texas, and subsequently, aligned with the research's pragmatic focus, the researchers designed a training model for these food bank users. Two research questions guided the study: 1) What are the digital existence levels of the food bank users; and 2) what training model would best serve these food bank users? Data were collected by means of a survey from 230 individual food bank users representing households. Additional data included observations and conversations with food bank staff, and documents and materials from the site which …
