The doctoral experiences of women and men are distinguishable and different. Studies of these differences have not considered the relationship of gender to the content of the curriculum. Learning to conduct scientific research is central to doctoral study. Widely held notions of what constitutes legitimate science are challenged by those who study the relationship between gender and science. They suggest that the predominant view of science is based on a set of ontological and epistemological assumptions which are incompatible with women's experiences. In this study an analysis was conducted of the ways in which selected cognitive and demographic factors predicted whether black students were academically successful at a predominantly white (a) two year private business college, (b) two year public community college, and (c) public undergraduate/graduate university. The academic achievement of 266 black students enrolled between the fall terms of 1983-84 and 1984-85 were analyzed using analysis of variance techniques. While much research has been conducted on learning style in the United States, no known empirical study has been done to compare the learning styles of Asian and Caucasian students on Seventh-day Adventist campuses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in learning-style preferences between a group of Asian students at Southeast Asia Union College in Singapore and Caucasian students at Andrews University in Michigan.

The four Seventh-day Adventist senior colleges in Inter-America aim at training Christian professionals who will serve the church either directly on its payroll or indirectly as devoted Christian professional laymen. The colleges are doubly challenged to maintain academic excellence while providing spiritual nourishment and commitment. The Bible class is central to this approach to education. Adventist leaders and educators, however, have not given serious study to the questions arising from this practice. No guidelines exist for determining an adequate amount of Bible classes. Problem. Research on James Marcia's identity statuses has been directed toward the overall problem of identity, but not toward the specific area of occupational identity. The major purpose of this study was to develop and validate an instrument to assess Marcia1s Identity Statuses (Achievement, Moratorium, Foreclosure, and Diffusion) for the occupational area. In addition, the relationships of selected variables to these statuses were investigated.

Evangelical seminaries in Canada enroll more students than those of mainline denominations, yet they lack recognition and acceptance. This problem may be due to insufficient information, inaccurate understanding of evangelicals, or the fact that most of them were founded since 1970. No study has attempted to describe them or to analyse their distinctives and growth.

The study was designed around an occupational-distribution model developed by Milner (1979) and adapted for the present study to include the factors: (a) years of schooling, (b) quality of education, (c) job experience, (d) information about openings and promotions, (e) geographical regions, and (f) deliberate discrimination. Twenty-five hypotheses, thought to be related to the adapted model, were developed and tested. A particular goal was to examine possible screening factors that may limit women and members of racial minority groups in securing higher education presidencies.

There is no written history of West Indies College (WIC). What little is cited in periodicals, magazines, Palm Leaves, and other sources about this institution is insignificant, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. For over half a century, WIC has been preparing workers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Until 1984, however, no comprehensive history was written on the development of this important institution of higher learning.

The first Seventh-day Adventist training school established in Indonesia was the Netherlands East Indies Training School (Indonesia Union College after 1962) founded in 1929. The school has since grown considerably and achieved university status, but no comprehensive history of it has been written. This lack points to a need for a systematic examination of the development of Seventh-day Adventist higher education in Indonesia. This study reconstructs the history of this institution from 1929 to 1970.

Problem. The Republic of Rwanda granted the request of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to establish and operate a private university. Rwanda agreed to provide land and recognize degrees and diplomas. The church agreed to have its programs approved by the Ministry of Higher Education. This study was to identify and determine the potential goals of higher education in Rwanda that could serve as guidelines for the Adventist University of Central Africa.

In this study the ability, achievement, demographic, and social interaction characteristics of three groups of baccalaureate nursing students were investigated. The three groups of students studied were dropouts, marginals, and high achievers. The purpose of the study was to identify predominant characteristics of dropout and marginal students that would act to direct the development of programs in nursing education.

The population studied consisted of the Nazareth College 1981-1982 freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students. In addition, the 1976-1980 graduating nursing classes were studied, including the freshman through senior year data for these classes.

As higher education administrators examine the applicability of management principles to education, the management of innovation comes into focus. This study was concentrated on the relationship between concern for innovation and other variables, namely: "Institutional Esprit," "Meeting Local Needs," "Self-Study and Planning," "Democratic Governance," and organization size. Purpose. This descriptive study examined the effect of administrative budgetary decisions for selected institutional services and personnel upon certain perceptions of continuing education students attending Grand Rapids Junior College.

Procedure. The researcher designed an assessment process and instrument to measure students' perceptions of accessibility toward selected institutional services and personnel. The assessment was conducted in the spring of 1981. The instrument was distributed to 4,459 students, 1,804 (40.5%) assessment instruments were returned, and 1,791 were determined to be usable. The purpose of this study was to determine which variables (alumni characteristics) may influence the giving pattern of alumni to their alma mater. With American colleges facing a continuing need for funds, a clear understanding of factors which may influence alumni giving is vital.

A questionnaire was mailed to all of the alumni of Los Angeles Baptist College. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between alumni donor characteristics and self-esteem and altruism with the assumption that donor self-esteem and altruism are related to alumni giving behavior. Eight donor characteristics perceived to represent a cross-section of donor characteristics having a direct or indirect relationship to either self-esteem, altruism, or both, in regard to philanthropy, were selected for study. Self-esteem and altruism were selected because they are perceived to represent factors that are paramount in motivation for giving.

This study investigated a relationship suggested in the literature between the level of service which academic departments in former teachers' colleges render to the teacher-training function and the local or cosmopolitan role orientation of their faculties. Localism and cosmopolitanism are polar sets of role expectations toward which professors and other professionals might orient. Dimensions of the local-cosmopolitan concept are: level of loyalty to the employing organization, commitment to professional role skills, and the use of an inner or outer reference group.
