Learning In Action: Implementing A Facilitated Learning Programme For Tourism Micro-Firms, Dr. Felicity Kelliher, Dr. Leana Reinl
Irish Business Journal
This paper presents findings from research associated with a tourism micro-firm facilitated learning programme, carried out over a four-year period. Considering traditional educational interventions have had limited impact on micro-firm activities; the researchers propose an alternative approach to meeting the learning needs of micro-firms which encompass local and self-developed knowledge and the successful completion of learning cycles. Using a behavioural lens, the researchers’ consider the experiential learning impact of facilitated learning programmes on observed micro-firm owner-managers. Adopting an action learning (AL) approach, the researchers explore the design, development, implementation and impact of this programme and contemplate the observed micro-firms’ focus …

Systematic Observations Of The Availability And Use Of Instructional Technology In Urban Middle School Classrooms, Hersh C. Waxman, Russell T. Evans, Anna W. Boriack, Emin Kilinc
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The present study uses systematic observations to investigate the availability and use of instructional technology in 64 middle school classrooms serving predominantly minority students from economically disadvantaged families. The T3 Overall Classroom Observation Measure, a high-inference walk-through instrument, was developed to examine: (a) types and use of technology present in the classroom, (b) teachers’ technology usage, (c) students’ technology usage, (d) teachers’ general instructional behaviors, and (e) students’ general behaviors. The results revealed that instructional technology was widely available in the classrooms, but most teachers and students were only using it to “some extent.”

Using Podcasting For Blended Learning, Sherry Robinson, Hans-Anton Stubberud, Carsten Blom-Ruud
Using Podcasting For Blended Learning, Sherry Robinson, Hans-Anton Stubberud, Carsten Blom-Ruud
International Journal for Business Education
Blended learning is a hybrid learning format combining some of the best features of distance learning and traditional face-to-face classes. Through the use of online course management sites and other media, students can access material at their convenience and attend a reduced number of classes that then emphasize interaction. This educational opportunity is especially valuable for working adults who cannot attend traditional classes. However, the lack of lectures can be a challenge for students who learn best by hearing. Podcasting, which involves the creation and distribution of audio and/or video files, is one tool that can help students to learn …

Learning Spaces In A Second Life, Eric Kisling, Elizabeth Hodge, Sharon Kibbe
Learning Spaces In A Second Life, Eric Kisling, Elizabeth Hodge, Sharon Kibbe
International Journal for Business Education
Pedagogy in virtual worlds is a new phenomenon that is evolving into something very different from the traditional classroom. Learning spaces are currently considered physical spaces, but with virtual worlds, learning spaces can now be designed in multiple ways for any given course. No longer is one constrained to location. A teacher can take their class to see international sites without the costs associated with a physical visit to the same location. As teachers begin to think about their methods of instruction and how best to enable their students to learn fully and completely, the pedagogy that is employed in …

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of technology usage in public schools having high minority student enrollment and in public schools having low minority student enrollment. Specifically, our interest was in determining the extent to which technology usage differed by region of the country for minority enrollment. Three statistical differences were reported for percent minority and region in computer use to read, write, and spell, to learn math, and for science concepts. Computer use to read, write, and spell had the highest frequency among schools having 50% or more minority student enrollment, but less than 75% …
The Continuing Challenges Of Technology Integration For Teachers, Pamela Morehead, Barbara Labeau
The Continuing Challenges Of Technology Integration For Teachers, Pamela Morehead, Barbara Labeau
Essays in Education
Technology development in the beginning of 21st century has changed not only the way classrooms appear, but also necessitates a change in how students in the classrooms learn. However, a problem continues to exist related to teachers using technology in meaningful ways for instruction. . In this article, we suggest that school districts use a curriculum mapping process to help teachers initially understand their curriculum more deeply. We posit that once teachers have an understanding of curriculum and learning processes, technology integration is possible. Once linkages form between what students need to know and teachers’ knowledge of how technology is …
Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif
Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif
Essays in Education
The ideas put forward here, although supported by empirical studies on the work of teachers and their profession (Mukamurera, 1998, 1999; Lessard and Tardif, 1996; Tardif and Lessard, 1999), examine, mostly from a philosophical and sociological perspective, the foundations of educational communication with respect to the role and meaning of ICTs in education. This article presents a critical reflection, wholly theoretical and non-objectifying, on the relation between ICTs and teaching. Because it is critical in nature, this reflection is not neutral. It is based on suppositions concerning the nature of teaching, and, in broader terms, on human communication and the …

Is Your Selection Of Content Delivery Vehicles Closely Aligned With Your Pedagogical Goals?, David N. Yearwood
Essays in Education
The instructional techniques utilized by educators are largely influenced by their knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning theories and also by their own experiences as a student. Modern classroom technologies have added another dimension to teaching and learning by virtue of its potential for explanatory and exploratory understanding of course content. However, determining how to effectively utilize such tools in one’s practice may elude educators who lack an understanding of electronic pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning with technology. This paper will examine factors guiding classroom practices, the need for educators to have more than a cursory …

To understand better the process by which P-12 teachers come to integrate technology into their instructional practices, the researcher undertook a yearlong investigation into technology use at two different school sites in northern Louisiana. Teachers’ stages of concern about technology, levels of technology use, perceptions about coursework impact on technology use and integration, and practices and perceptions about teaching and learning with technology were analyzed. Although all teachers perceived the coursework to be effective in facilitating their utilization and integration of technology, they perceived no single best way to integrate technology. Each teacher identified, designed and developed, and implemented his …
It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell
It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell
Essays in Education
Increasing use of computers in schools has led to a mis-alignment between the way some students develop skill and knowledge and how they are tested. This paper reviews past research that demonstrates that paper-based tests that require students to produce written responses underestimate the achievement of students who are accustomed to writing on computer. The paper then explores how learning that occurs through other instructional uses of computers is not adequately captured by current testing practices. The paper argues that new approaches should be explored to better measure student learning.

The New Course At Muresk Agricultural College, D K. Bartels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE original aim of all the agricultural colleges in Australia was to train young men to be farmers.
Over the years, and particularly in recent years, the colleges in the Eastern States found that less and less of their students were coming from the farming community, and a diminishing number were returning to farming.
