The Status Of The Elementary School Principalship In Utah, Sherman Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The aim of this study is to record the status of the elementary school principalship in the State of Utah during the 1951-1952 school year.

The problem arose from a situation in which the writer, as President of the Utah Elementary School Principal's Association, was continually asked questions pertaining to the status of this group, and because there was a scarcity of current information available upon which to base reliable answers to these requests.

This situation led to the formulation of the study herein presented--a survey of conditions as they existed in Utah during the 1951-1952 school year. It should …

An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse May 1953

An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study of approximately 50 early school drop-outs is an effort to find out why so many boys and girls leave school before they complete their high school course. We need to know the basic reasons that prompt their decisions, not the superficial excuses that appear on many school records. The study was undertaken in the belief that when the causes are understood, they can be remedied through measures to provide adequate programs of student aid. If it is because of lack of interest in school, this, too, can be remedied through changes in school programs to make them mean …

A significant phase of the modern high school curriculum is the program of specialized guidance services to pupils. The importance of providing personalized services as a means of aiding individuals to grow toward social and occupational adequacy is becoming more and more definitely recognized by educators today. Monroe (1), in discussing the literature in this field, gives the following definition of personnel services:

"As differentiated from instruction and the business affairs... student personnel work refers to all activities undertaken or sponsored by an educational institution, aside from curricular instruction, in which the student's personal development is the primary consideration. Student …

An Intensive Study Of The Practices Of Financing Extracurriculum Activities Discovered In Five Utah Secondary Schools, Irving B. Moore

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The evaluation of the effectiveness of the various aspects of our educational activity has long been practiced. Such evaluations have resulted in greater efficiency and widespread improvements in the educational fields. Continued appraisal of those aspects of our extracurricular programs that will result in greater efficiency is an ever present need; and the need for continual improvements in the field of extracurriculum finances assumes greater importance now, since in the addition to a greater tax burden for education, parents must contribute to the bulk of the funds for the extracurriculum program, in one way or another, through meeting the needs …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past few years revenue for the support and maintenance of public schools in Utah has become a subject of increasing concern and discussion. Considerable effort has been made on the state level in an attempt to equalize the financial programs among the school districts in the state. Much of this effort has placed its emphasis upon property tax as the major source of school revenue, both on the local level and the state level. Inflationary trends in the national economy have added to the aggravation of this problem. It has become increasingly necessary to seek additional revenue in …

A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris May 1952

A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the schools of Utah, as elsewhere in the nation, a situation has arisen which is of vital importance to the continuance of orchestral music. We find, on the basis of casual observation, that the string instruments are not being taught on an equal basis with the band instruments. It is generally assumed that band and orchestra instruction are equally desirable in an instrumental program. Unfortunately, many school authorities are not aware of the necessity of such equal opportunities for school children and as a result we may find string music relegated to an insecure position in our educational system.

Transcripts of credits from high school including specified subjects, the passing of the generally recognized College Entrance Board Examination, and the passing of entrance examinations set up by the individual colleges all have been used as evidence for admission to college. Our American culture and civilization depends in large measure upon the recruiting of the right kind of men and women to be teachers in our American schools and colleges. All professions depend on effective teaching for their life blood. Many educators and colleges during the past few years have become concerned with pre-service selection methods for improving the teaching personnel. This concern has become somewhat intensified at the present time, largely as a result of four factors. One factor is the large number of returning servicemen, who are turning to teaching as a career. The farmers of today are faced with many more and varied problems than were their grandfathers. This is in part due to the rapid mechanization of farming that has been developing during the past three decades. This movement for increased mechanization in farming presents a new challenge to farmers because of their responsibility in caring for farm machinery and maintaining it in an efficient operating condition. In effect, this means that the efficient farmer must devote an increasing amount of time and attention to the managerial and operative skills connected with mechanized farming. A Study Of Adult Reading In A Selected Rural County Of Utah, Lucy V. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most remarkable developments of the present age is the apparently large increase in the reading public. The vast output of reading materials being purchased would seem to be evidence that reading is playing an increasingly important part in the daily lives of most people. Magazines and other publications crowd our stores, our homes, our very tables; at first glance, one would think that reading matter usurps our attention, and that we have come to depend upon it. The modern reader glances at the label on a can to learn its contents and uses. He reads the weather …

It has been thought in the past that any person regardless of …

Some Changes In State Educational Administration In Utah In Terms Of The Recommendations Of The Utah Survey Of 1926, Verland L. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Inasmuch as this study is concerned primarily with state school administration and an educational survey concerned with administration, it appears proper to devote some attention to the evolution of these two things. The first consideration will be given to the development of state educational administration.

When grants were made by congress to the various states for educational purposes, the responsibilities of administration went to the states. The state administrative systems evolved as a natural process. Cubberley traces this development from the time the boards consisted of ex officio state officers entirely, through the time when school men were ex officio …
