Access To Educational Opportunities For Latino Students In Four Massachusetts School Districts, Carole C. Upshur, Rodolfo R. Vega, Natalie Carithers, Charles Jones, Dale Lucy-Allen, Tatjana Meschede, Charles Ndungu
Gastón Institute Publications
This report was prompted by the pressing concerns over the high failure rates of Latino students on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) exam. While 27% of White students failed the English portion of the MCAS test and 38% failed the Mathematics portion in 2000, the corresponding rates for Latino students were 66% and 79% respectively (Massachusetts Department of Education, 2000a). There is a great urgency to understand why Latino students score substantially behind students from other racial/ethnic groups. This urgency stems from the reality that students currently enrolled in the 10th grade will be required to pass this exam …

Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. Details …
Classroom And School Factors Affecting Mathematics Achievement: A Comparative Study Of The Us And Australia Using Timss, Stephen Lamb, Sue Fullarton
Classroom And School Factors Affecting Mathematics Achievement: A Comparative Study Of The Us And Australia Using Timss, Stephen Lamb, Sue Fullarton
TIMSS Australia Monograph Series
Recent work on differences in mathematics achievement has highlighted the importance of classroom, teacher and school factors. The present study used data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to look at student, classroom and school factors influencing mathematics achievement in the United States (US) and Australia. It found that classroom differences account for about one-third of the variation in student achievement in the United States and over 0ne-quarter in Australia. Much of the classroom variation was due to compositional and organisational factors. This has important implications for policy regarding the improvement of mathematics achievement in schools.

An Examination Of Student Achievement In Michigan Charter Schools, Randall W. Eberts, Kevin M. Hollenbeck
An Examination Of Student Achievement In Michigan Charter Schools, Randall W. Eberts, Kevin M. Hollenbeck
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Since their inception in 1991, the number of and the student enrollment in charter school have burgeoned. However, little attention has been paid to their effects on student achievement. Proponents hypothesize direct and indirect positive impacts of charter schools on student achievement. The direct effect is through the restructuring of teaching and learning processes. The indirect effect operates through peer effects on learning and through the market forces of competition. This paper focuses on student achievement in charter schools in Michigan. The analyses presented here suggest that students attending charter schools in Michigan are not reaching the same levels of …
