Office of Institutional Effectiveness

INTRODUCTION In fall of 1998, Western enrolled 2199 new freshmen; in the fall of 1999, 1725 of them returned, for a 78.4% retention rate. This study examine what influences freshman retention and also grade point average, the key indicator of academic adjustment and by far the most powerful predictor of retention. The orientation of this analysis, like all those performed by the Office of Institutional Research and Resource Planning, is toward policy. We seek to develop knowledge that may help Western serve its students and the public better-in this case by improving early academic adjustment and increasing retention. All Western …

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta Oct 2001

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Asking questions is central to intellectual effort; it is instrumental in bridging the gap between the known and the unknown. Questioning existed even before the time of Greek philosopher Socrates and still prevails in classrooms. Questioning is a major teaching and learning strategy for teachers in Pakistan. Unfortunately, teachers’ questioning overrules students’ questioning, leaving neither space nor time to create an interactive environment that promotes curiosity and meaningful learning. Using an innovative approach, we attempted to implement students’ questioning in an upper primary science classroom. The encouraging findings of our study and their implications are discussed in this article.

Scoring Occupational Categories For Social Research: A Review Of Current Practice, With Australian Examples, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan Aug 2001

Scoring Occupational Categories For Social Research: A Review Of Current Practice, With Australian Examples, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan

Julie McMillan

The scoring of occupational categories has a long history. After reviewing the historical background, we develop and discuss the properties of two new Australian scales based on current theorising in stratification research. The first is based on the operation of the labour market and scores occupations to reflect their central role in converting educational credentials into market income. The second is based on patterns of social interaction and scores occupations to reflect the choices that people make in marriage markets. While these two scales are not theoretically or empirically equivalent, they are closely related and provide equally valid, but alternative, …

Strategies To Ease The Negative Effects Of Mobility On Academic Achievement., D.Kaye Reed Thomas Aug 2001

Strategies To Ease The Negative Effects Of Mobility On Academic Achievement., D.Kaye Reed Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mobility, the movement of students from school to school, affects students, classrooms, schools, and systems. Extensive research has been conducted on the relationship between mobility and student academics. Although the research has not determined mobility is the cause of lower academic scores, it is certainly a contributing factor. Most students with high mobility rates also have difficulty in math, reading, or language. Teachers of classrooms with these students tend to "flatten" the curriculum by reviewing more than usual. Long-range planning for these students can be difficult. Schools and systems may plan programs for students who have moved on by the …

Effects Of Software Use On The Preparation Of The Individualized Education Programs (Iep’S), Nancy Ann Beukema Aug 2001

Effects Of Software Use On The Preparation Of The Individualized Education Programs (Iep’S), Nancy Ann Beukema

Dissertations

Special educators are required to process paperwork mandated by federal regulations for students with special needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1997 (IDEA ’97, Public Law 105-17) requires the evaluation of students with special needs occur as frequently as their non-disabled peers. An annual review is also mandated for each student’s individualized educational program (IEP), in order to reevaluate the future goals and objectives of the IEPs. A student identified as needing special education services is one who needs specially designed instruction and this instruction must meet the specific individual needs of that student. IDEA ‘97 mandates the need …

Reading In Year 12: A Retrospective Review., Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers (1941-2018)

This presentation is focused on the requirements for English in the final year of schooling in Victoria over the past 50 years. For at least the last half-century, the subject "English" has held a significant place in the final year of secondary education in Victoria. From 1950 — 2001 English has been a compulsory requirement for the completion of the Year 12 certificate, in the various forms that certificate has taken, from Matriculation in the 1950s, to the current Victorian Certificate of Education. In the context of a national conference on the teaching of English, an historical case study contextualised …

Latino Students In Boston: An Educational Profile, Miren Uriarte

Gastón Institute Publications

Having an impact on public policy requires that groups and communities be able to understand and manage information. But it is often the case that data and information that can be useful to community action is not accessible or understandable. Since 1992, when the 1990 census data became available, the Gastón Institute has developed data profiles of each city and town with significant Latino population in an effort to bridge this important aspect of the information gap facing Latino communities in the state. The feedback from community leaders and organizations about these data profiles led us to use a similar …

Factors That Effect The Course/Subject Selection Process Of High School Students Of African Descent, Denise-Bonnette Jones Jul 2001

Factors That Effect The Course/Subject Selection Process Of High School Students Of African Descent, Denise-Bonnette Jones

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Advanced societies require technologically literate citizens who can solve problems, manage complexities, find and use resources, and learn and apply evolving technologies (Owen, 1997). Today's rapidly changing economy is defined by constantly evolving technologies and falling behind is a recipe for disaster (Augustine, 1997). At the forefront is a reality that for most people, particularly the youth, the period during and beyond high school is marked by important career decision-making tasks. Determining what to do next in their lives remains an important but arduous developmental task for the youth leaving secondary school. As the world of work becomes more complex …

Options In Learning Management Systems Software. Approaches To Research: Recognising What People Can Do That Computers Can’T, Kathryn Moyle Jun 2001

Options In Learning Management Systems Software. Approaches To Research: Recognising What People Can Do That Computers Can’T, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle (consultant)

Research is a fundamental part of education. Researching online learning environments is informing the work of schools and school education jurisdictions. It is argued here that using approaches to research that recognise the place people hold in school education and technology research helps inform the methods of the research conducted. Technological determinism has tended to imbue the language of school education technology policies. This has seen the power and control humans can exercise over approaches to school education research and policy-making, removed. As there has been considerable work already conducted on the technical aspects of learning management systems software, this …
