International Perspectives On Student Behavior: What We Can Learn, Charles J. Russo, Izak Oosthuizen, Charl C. Wolhuter
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The second volume of companion books on comparative student discipline identifies the best practices in dealing with student misconduct, on six continents, in a legally sound manner. It is essential for educators to examine national as well as international practices addressing student misconduct in schools because learner misbehavior often has a detrimental effect on the quality of teaching and learning in elementary and secondary schools. The countries covered are Brazil, China, Malaysia, Turkey and South Africa.

The Disconnect Between Policy And Research: Examining The Research Into Full-Time K-12 Online Learning, Michael K. Barbour
The Disconnect Between Policy And Research: Examining The Research Into Full-Time K-12 Online Learning, Michael K. Barbour
Education Faculty Publications
While there has been some improvement in what is known about supplemental K-12 online learning, there continues to be a lack of evidence to guide the practice of full-time K-12 online learning. This paper concludes that despite considerable enthusiasm for full-time virtual education in some quarters, there is little high quality research to support the practice or call for expanding this form of virtual schools.

Students' Experiences With Different Course Delivery Modalities: On Campus, Online, And Satellite, Mark C. Rehfuss, Andrea Kirk-Jenkins, Tammi F. Dice
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
In an effort to adapt to the technological advances of this century, the training of human services professionals has grown from traditional classrooms and satellite programs to online education. Many human services programs are under pressure from their universities and students to expand into online education. This study examined 252 students’ experiences and perceptions of their Bachelors of Science program as it transitioned to offering courses online in addition to on campus and satellite sites. Students’ narrative responses reflected 4 themes: convenience, interactions, learning preference, and technology. These themes and their implications for educators and students are discussed.
Technical Adequacy And Acceptability Of Curriculum-Based Measurement And The Measures Of Academic Progress, Stacy-Ann A. January, Scott P. Ardoin
Technical Adequacy And Acceptability Of Curriculum-Based Measurement And The Measures Of Academic Progress, Stacy-Ann A. January, Scott P. Ardoin
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Curriculum-based measurement in reading (CBM-R) and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) are assessment tools widely employed for universal screening in schools. Although a large body of research supports the validity of CBM-R, limited empirical evidence exists supporting the technical adequacy of MAP or the acceptability of either measure for universal screening. Purposes of the current study were to replicate and extend prior research by (a) examining the extent to which CBM-R performance measures more than word reading skills, (b) evaluating the concurrent validity of MAP with CBM-R, (c) determining the potential benefit of administering MAP with CBM-R for universal …
Vocabulary Word Instruction For Students Who Read Braille, Mackenzie E. Savaiano, Donald L. Compton, Deborah D. Hatton, Blair P. Lloyd
Vocabulary Word Instruction For Students Who Read Braille, Mackenzie E. Savaiano, Donald L. Compton, Deborah D. Hatton, Blair P. Lloyd
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
The association made between the meaning, spelling, and pronunciation of a word has been shown to help children remember the meanings of words. The present study addressed whether the presence of a target word in braille during instruction facilitated vocabulary learning more efficiently than an auditory-only instructional condition. The authors used an adapted alternating treatments single-case experimental design with three students with visual impairments who read braille, collecting data on definition recall and spelling during each session. Data on definition recall were used to determine mastery. The results of this study are not consistent with previous findings with students who …

A Historical Review And Resource Guide To The Scholarship Of Teaching And Training In Psychology And Law And Forensic Psychology, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Bette L. Bottoms, Margaret C. Stevenson, Jennifer C. Veilleux
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
The field of psychology and law, including forensic psychology, is an exciting concentration of research activity and student training and has grown rapidly, but to what extent have teaching and training efforts in the field been systematically catalogued and evaluated? We conducted a historical review and content analysis of the American and Canadian literature on the scholarship of teaching and training in the field. This review catalogs (a) information related to the development of training and teaching, (b) descriptions of programs and courses at various levels, and (c) articles on teaching resources or techniques in this field. We hope it …
Educational Infrastructure And Resources For Sustainable Access To Schooling And Outcomes: The Case Of Early Literacy Development In Southern Tanzania, Marriote Ngwaru, Mary Oluga
Educational Infrastructure And Resources For Sustainable Access To Schooling And Outcomes: The Case Of Early Literacy Development In Southern Tanzania, Marriote Ngwaru, Mary Oluga
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Following on the 1990 and 2000 World Conferences on Education for All, African governments increased their focus on access to schooling (but not necessarily on outcomes) by providing more facilities for increased enrollments. The learning outcomes that had been neglected led to a call to focus on more sustainable access – re-examining the quality of some of those facilities against the anticipated quality of educational outcomes. Studies in Southern and Eastern Africa, including the one under discussion here, indicate that the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will not rely only on school-based factors but also on the careful …
The Current State Of Evidence-Based Practices With Classroom Management, Peter Ross, Bruce Sliger
The Current State Of Evidence-Based Practices With Classroom Management, Peter Ross, Bruce Sliger
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Education has been calling for evidence-based practices to help validate it as a bona fide profession (Gable, Tonelson, Sheth, Wilson, & Park, 2012). Lack of evidence-based practices presents an unusual irony in education since the literature has been addressing this research-to-practice gap for years. In particular, evidence based practices in classroom management and discipline have been nearly absent. Skinner noted as far back as 1968 (Skinner, 1968) that most teachers simply incorporate personal experiences into classroom practices rather than embracing science-based methods.
Motivation And Career-Development Training Programs: Use Of Regulatory Focus To Determine Program Effectiveness, Peter J. Anthony
Motivation And Career-Development Training Programs: Use Of Regulatory Focus To Determine Program Effectiveness, Peter J. Anthony
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
The purpose of this study was to focus on the relationship between career-development training programs and the motivation of employees. The study used a qualitative method and a phenomenological design using semistructured interviews conducted with a script of open-ended questions. Two main components of the research design were the modified van Kaam method for exploration of experiences and the purposive selection of the participants. The 20 participants in the sample were project managers and consultants from south-central Texas, all of whom had experience with governmental projects. Based on interview responses, the findings of this study highlighted a concern from the …
An Effective School Improvement Framework: Using The National School Improvement Tool, Deborah Seifert, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
An Effective School Improvement Framework: Using The National School Improvement Tool, Deborah Seifert, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
School and system improvement
This occasional paper of the Centre for Education Policy and Practice outlines how the National School Improvement Tool, developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER ) in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment is being used in Australian schools. The Tool is grounded in international research, and its nine domains focus schools on whole school improvement in teaching and learning. ACER’s school improvement team conducts reviews and training for reviewers across Australia, and report on several themes or success factors which emerge from the consultants’ reflections.

Review Of Children's Rights 0-8: Promoting Participation In Education And Care By M. Kanyal, Lori Imasiku
Review Of Children's Rights 0-8: Promoting Participation In Education And Care By M. Kanyal, Lori Imasiku
Faculty Publications
The book Children’s Right’s 0-8 discusses the right to participate in education and decision making for young children. The title itself was somewhat unclear as the book limited the discussion of children’s rights to participation and one must only assume that the 0- 8 is in reference to the age of children. Though the title itself is unclear, the contents of the book are well developed and can be a useful tool for those who work with young children as caregivers or educators. The theoretical development of child participation makes this a book suitable resource for researchers and scholars.

Within-Level Group Factorial Invariance With Multilevel Data: Multilevel Factor Mixture And Multilevel Mimic Models, Eun Sook Kim, Myeongsun Yoon, Yao Wen, Wen Luo, Oi-Man Kwok
Educational Measurement and Research Faculty Publications
This study suggests two approaches to factorial invariance testing with multilevel data when the groups are at the within level: multilevel factor mixture model for known classes (ML FMM) and multilevel multiple indicators multiple causes model (ML MIMIC). The adequacy of the proposed approaches was investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Additionally, the performance of different types of model selection criteria for determining factorial invariance or in detecting item noninvariance was examined. Generally, both ML FMM and ML MIMIC demonstrated acceptable performance with high true positive and low false positive rates, but the performance depended on the fit statistics used for …

At Issue: A Comprehensive Review And Synthesis Of The Literature On Late Registration, Patrick Tompkins, Mitchell Williams
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Using a literature review taxonomy described by Cooper and Hedges (2009), an analysis of 32 publicly available studies of late registrations was conducted to provide researchers and policymakers with an assessment of the extent, quality, and major findings of the studies. The reviewer asserted that few high-quality studies have been conducted on late registration, and the research does not provide strong evidence that late registration is associated with poor student outcomes. The review provided answers to the following questions: What does the body of research on late registration indicate about the advisability of retaining it as an option for students? …
