This study examined how different types of dialogues promoted knowledge construction in an online course. Findings show that instructor designed the online discussion questions which balanced the grounding dialogue, critical dialogue and reflective dialogues. Three types of dialogues were interwoven together to help students understand the topics from various dimensions. Giving students freedom to select readings and discussion questions, creating a safe environment, and providing practical and controversial materials give space for different types of dialogues to flourish, and are crucial for stimulating the active and proactive knowledge sharing and creation.

This study explored priorities for online instructional behavior in post-traditional programs at Private Christian University (PCU). No prior study had been identified that compared the online instructional priorities among four groups: administrators (n = 25), full-time faculty (n = 73), adjunct faculty (n = 69), and students (n = 321). Faculty workload calculations are complex and an institution’s mission directs the level of faculty participation in each teaching, scholarship and service. The University of Saint Joseph (USJ; West Hartford, Connecticut) transitioned from a college to a university, necessitating reexamination of faculty workload policy. The review was conducted collaboratively between senior administration and key faculty to understand best practices in calculating teaching workload. A review of best practice, evaluation of workload policies at a defined set of peer institutions, and an internal investigation of the types of course offered by USJ faculty was examined.
