A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison Dec 2010

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …

To Share Or Not To Share: Cancer And What Teachers Should Tell Students About It, Robert A. Eckhart Dec 2010

To Share Or Not To Share: Cancer And What Teachers Should Tell Students About It, Robert A. Eckhart

Robert A. Eckhart

How much personal information to disclose to students is a fundamental question teachers have been asking themselves for decades. How much should teachers tell their students – a lot or a little? How should they tell them –in class, or face-to-face? Should the teacher only tell their students in a limited manner and then not answer questions, or should they be prepared to answer any and all questions the students might have? These are difficult questions, but if the teacher approaches the disclosure in the right way – avoiding irrelevant, overly negative, or offensive disclosures – it can be a …

Analyzing And Evaluating The Phases Of Addie, Tonia A. Dousay, Regene D. Logan

Tonia A. Dousay

Even after decades of authors creating their new models of instructional design, ADDIE remains one of the most commonly taught processes to instructional systems students. The ADDIE phases showcase the most important steps taken when designing and implementing instruction. Many scholars focus on the importance of employing a systematic approach to identify a performance gap and prescribe an instructional intervention. This approach includes the concept of evaluation and the process of formatively correcting issues along the way while also providing summative feedback to the stakeholders. Yet, as the field of instructional systems continues to grow, ADDIE is continually attacked with …

A Teacher's Checklist For Evaluating Treatment Intrusiveness, Stacy L. Carter, Michael R. Mayton, John J. Wheeler Dec 2010

A Teacher's Checklist For Evaluating Treatment Intrusiveness, Stacy L. Carter, Michael R. Mayton, John J. Wheeler

John J. Wheeler

Teachers are frequently involved in developing and evaluating treatments for problematic behaviors. Along with other members of the interdisciplinary team, they must determine the level of intrusiveness that a treatment may have on a student. Several factors that influence the intrusiveness of treatment procedures are described. These factors were used to develop a checklist that could be used systematically by teachers to evaluate the intrusiveness of treatments recommended by treatment teams. After the checklist was administered to a group of preservice teachers, it was found to be capable of discriminating among several treatment options described in a series of case …

Technological Iatrogenesis: The Manifestation Of Inadequate Organizational Planning And The Integration Of Health Information Technology., Patrick Albert Palmieri Dec 2010

Technological Iatrogenesis: The Manifestation Of Inadequate Organizational Planning And The Integration Of Health Information Technology., Patrick Albert Palmieri

Patrick Albert Palmieri

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) views Health Information Technology (HIT) as an essential organizational prerequisite for the delivery of safe, reliable, and cost effective health services. However, HIT presents the proverbial double-edged sword in generating solutions to improve system performance while facilitating the genesis of novel iatrogenic problems. Incongruent organizational processes give rise to technological iatrogenesis or the unintended consequences to system integrity and the resulting organizational outcomes potentiated by incongruent organizational–technological interfaces. HIT is a disruptive innovation for health services organizations but remains an overlooked organizational development (OD) concern. Recognizing the technology–organizational misalignments that result from HIT adoption is …
