Law Review Story, Lisa Pruitt Dec 1996

Law Review Story, Lisa Pruitt

Lisa R Pruitt

This essay is the story of the author’s election as editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Law Review and of her tenure in that role. The story implicates a range of legal issues including hate speech, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It is also the tale of the author’s feminist epiphany and of the law school’s failure to respond to the harassment. It was published in the 50th anniversary issue of the Arkansas Law Review.

Some Dilemmas Confronting The Educational Theatre, Jared Brown Dec 1996

Some Dilemmas Confronting The Educational Theatre, Jared Brown

Jared Brown

"Educational theatre": the term itself implies a dichotomy, or perhaps an amalgam of two quite different phenomena. A tension between the demands of education and the demands of the theatre does indeed exist, and it is the job of the teacher-artist to maintain a harmonious balance between them.

Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald Dec 1995

Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald

Dr. Ronald Macdonald

Coming out of the closet is a decision that all young gay men consider, however there has been little recent research undertaken which investigates this phenomenon.

The purpose of this qualitative study is to provide an account of young men’s experiences in the process of coming out and a critical analysis of the influences of cultural, political and social factors which impinge on the process. A phenomenological method (utilising Colaizzi’s procedural steps) will be employed to collect data and to extrapolate common themes and meanings. A purposeful sample of seven young gay men were interviewed. Data was collected from taped …

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill Dec 1994

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill

Chamkaur Gill

Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.

Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn Oct 1993

Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

While admissions at the undergraduate level are experiencing a surge of students over 30 years of age, the pool of traditionally aged students is declining. These phenomena indicate that older (over age 30) students will also be enrolling in graduate programs in increasing numbers. This paper addresses the issue of retention as it pertains to older female graduate students. Data are examined from a fall 1991 survey and its 1992 followup at a large Midwestern research university. The study evaluated such potential obstacles to female graduation as concern family issues, relationships with faculty and fellow students, difficulty of the coursework, …

Female Doctoral Students: How Age Differentiates Institutional Choice, Retention Enhancement, And Scholarly Accomplishments, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Susan K. Doyle

Linda Serra Hagedorn

This study, conducted at an urban research university, attempted to identify those conditions valuable in recruiting and subsequently retaining older (over 35 years of age) female doctoral students. The study used data from a Spring 1991 survey of all graduate students which solicited information about experiences, accomplishments, and growth attributable to the graduate experience. Seventy-nine percent of female doctoral students participated in the survey. Sample size for statistical tests varied from 257 to 309. The analysis compared the responses of women under 35 to those of women 35 and over in institutional choice, retention enhancement, and professional accomplishments. Findings indicated …

The Uses Of Binary Thinking, Peter Elbow Dec 1992

The Uses Of Binary Thinking, Peter Elbow

Peter Elbow

When thinkers encounter a contradiction they have traditionally tended to take one of three courses: to try to figure out which side is right; to figure out which side should be seen as hierarchially dominant; or to figure out or how to use a dialectic process synthesize them into a higher concept. In this essay I argue for the value of trying to learn to affirm both sides in all their contrariness.

Looking out at the faces in philosophy lecture hall, I often detect widespread bewilderment. Some look forlorn, others worried. Mostly I spot the grimace worn by those who have unwillingly entered some twilight zone of experience. It says: How in God's name did I get in here? It is often accompanied by an equally expressive look: How do I get out?" ~ from the chapter
