Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work
This study investigates the challenges and opportunities pertaining to transportation policies that may arise as a result of emerging autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. AV technologies can decrease the transportation cost and increase accessibility to low-income households and persons with mobility issues. This emerging technology also has far-reaching applications and implications beyond all current expectations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the relevant literature and explores a broad spectrum of issues from safety to machine ethics. An indispensable part of a prospective AV development is communication over cars and infrastructure (connected vehicles). A major knowledge gap exists in AV technology …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the pervasive use of recommender systems and web/mobile applications such as TripAdvisor and Booking.com, an emerging interest is to generate personalized tourist routes based on a tourist’s preferences and time budget constraints, often in real-time. The problem is generally known as the Tourist Trip Design Problem (TTDP) which is a route-planning problem on multiple Points of Interest (POIs). TTDP can be considered as an extension of the classical problem of Team Orienteering Problem with Time Windows (TOPTW). The objective of the TOPTW is to determine a fixed number of routes that maximize the total collected score. The TOPTW also …

Applicability And Usefulness Of The Stakeholder Strategy Matrix For Festival Management, Mathilda Van Niekerk
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article examines the applicability and usefulness of the stakeholder strategy matrix in the context of festival management. An extensive literature review gave rise to the development of an online survey. Data for the study were collected from festival managers in the US. This empirical study indicated that internal and external festival stakeholders differ from each other in significant ways, and that different management strategies should be used to manage them. The stakeholder strategy matrix appears to be more effective for the management of internal festival stakeholders and the least effective for managing external festival stakeholders. Based on the results …

Perceptions Of Pre- And Post-Event Impacts Of Pei 2014 Year-Long Celebrations, Dongkoo Yun, Melissa James-Maceachern
TTRA Canada 2016 Conference
This study examines Canadian perceptions of pre- and post-event impacts of the PEI 2014 Celebrations using the 2013 and 2015 surveys of PEI residents and other Canadians conducted by the Centre for Tourism Research. Overall, results indicate that Canadians’ awareness of, knowledge about, and attitudes toward the 1864 Charlottetown Conference and the PEI 2014 Celebrations increased and positively changed over time. The research also suggests that event organizers and/or destination tourism managers need to put greater emphasis on the “socio-cultural aspects” of the event such as community participation and cultural identity, and make an effort to increase tourism volume and …

TTRA Canada 2016 Conference
Introduction: The decision making process for individuals who are considering traveling to a particular destination can be influenced by several different factors. Among those factors is the influence that travel professionals such as tour operators and travel agents play in recommending, or not, a destination. This study was conducted to gain further insight into the role that travel intermediaries have in shaping and influencing their customer’s decision to visit a country. More specifically, the study investigates how Canadian travel agents perceive Colombia as a travel destination. Colombia as a country has developed a negative reputation, and has become associated …

Improving Service Experiences With Mobile Ethnography: The Case Of Two Attractions In Toronto, Frederic Dimanche, Chris Gibbs

Introduction: Tourism destination competitiveness has been one of the main areas of research in the past twenty years (e.g., Dwyer & Kim, 2003; Enright & Newton, 2004; Ritchie & Crouch, 2003). The competitiveness of any destination relies, in part, on the quality of the customer experience that is delivered in its tourist attractions. More specifically, tourist satisfaction is based on visitors’ assessment of an experience as compared to their expectations. It is therefore essential for attractions to not only monitor visitor satisfaction, but also to continuously improve the design of the services and experiences that are provided. The purpose …

The effects of age and gender on mobile device use were examined and revealed that there were no significant differences between male and female with regards to use but that age is significantly related to use. Specifically, younger attendees were more likely to use …

Las Vegas is in the middle of a period of generational transformation. The visitor profile has changed greatly since 2007, however the behavior and attitudes of this new visitor are very different that of previous generations of visitors. By undertaking a survey of this group we identify several key trends that make this group unique. This paper analyses the next generation of visitor, and suggests methods …
