The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.
For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …

Human Genomics Of Biotechnology, Brian Bluelake, Bob Wang, Serin Hudson, Fatih Ersan, Aaron Freier
Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects
Biotechnology is the term for the techniques of managing biological systems for human benefit. A biological system can range from a single cell organism to different types of plants, animals, and to the very complicated human being. Biotechnology includes a great range of scientific and technological disciplines and has a great variety of important applications in biology, medicine, agriculture, and various industries. In our report, we shall only focus on one of the most active frontiers of today's biotechnology-human genomics.
Internet Radio: Identifying Administrative And Regulatory Gaps In A Cyberspace World Without Borders, Linda-Marie Sundstrom
Internet Radio: Identifying Administrative And Regulatory Gaps In A Cyberspace World Without Borders, Linda-Marie Sundstrom
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this paper is to identify gaps in regulatory policies resulting from the emergence of Internet radio. To accomplish this purpose, the paper seeks to: 1) provide insights into agencies that may have direct involvement in potentially regulating Internet radio; 2) explore the concepts of jurisdiction in cyberspace; and 3) address the regulatory challenges that exist when traditional country borders no longer apply.

Proposal For A Centralized And Integrated Registry For Security Interests In Intellectual Property, William J. Murphy
Proposal For A Centralized And Integrated Registry For Security Interests In Intellectual Property, William J. Murphy
Law Faculty Scholarship
As the world economy enters the twenty-first century, job and wealth creation is increasingly based on innovation and creativity that, in turn, can give rise to important intellectual property rights. For many companies and individuals these intellectual property rights may represent their most valuable assets, or in some cases, their only valuable assets. As a result, intellectual property rights increasingly play a critical the role in financing.
Unlocking the job and wealth creating potential of intellectual property assets requires putting these assets into use, and that often requires a capital investment. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs and innovators lack the capital necessary …
An Empirical Analysis Of Electronic Data Interchange (Edi) Implementation Benefits In Kentucky Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises: Some Implications For New It Implementation, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
This paper reports that the benefits accrued from implementing and integrating Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be conceptualized into two factors. First, firms derive operational/tactical benefits by predominantly focusing on increasing internal utility of this technology. Second, firms derive strategic benefits from EDI in the form of better external relationships and alliances with trading partners and an enhanced ability to compete in their market. Among other significant findings, there are clear indications from the correlation statistics reported here that experience with EDI, industrial category of a firm and the level of ED! integral ton …

Characterization Of Internet Traffic And User Classification: Foundations For The Next Generation Of Network Emulation, Rigoberto Chinchilla, John Hoag, David Koonce, Hans Kruse, Shawn Osterman, Yufei Wang
Rigoberto Chinchilla
Rigorous experimentation is emerging as the preferred method for validating the benefits of protocols, especially those affecting quality of service. The emulation of traffic generators provides a compact and efficient method for testing protocols and techniques in a realistic context. Models of user behavior serve as the basis for the trafgen traffic emulator and are subject to refinement as our knowledge expands. The project in this study uses a layered approach to study different Internet applications and protocols including the hypertext transfer protocol, http.

Reconsidering Estoppel: Patent Administration And The Failure Of Festo, R. Polk Wagner
Reconsidering Estoppel: Patent Administration And The Failure Of Festo, R. Polk Wagner
All Faculty Scholarship
Last Term, in Festo Corporation v. Shoketsu Kinzoku Kogyo Kabashuki Co., the United States Supreme Court missed perhaps the most important opportunity for patent law reform in two decades. At the core of the failure to grasp the implications of "prosecution history estoppel" - a judicially-crafted principle limiting the enforceable scope of patents based on acts occurring during their application process - is the heretofore universal (but ultimately unsupportable) view of the doctrine as an arbitrary ex post limitation on patent scope. This Article demonstrates the serious flaws in this traditionalist approach, and develops a new theory of prosecution history …
Scaling Up Information Services For Development: A Framework Of Increasing Returns For Telecenters, Ted Tschang, Mathurot Chuladul, Thuy Thu Le
Scaling Up Information Services For Development: A Framework Of Increasing Returns For Telecenters, Ted Tschang, Mathurot Chuladul, Thuy Thu Le
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Telecentres are an important type of information and communication technology (ICT) system particularly assisting rural and urban communities in developing countries, but the focus is often put on social development, sometimes on static economic returns, and rarely on dynamic economic aspects. This paper develops a basis for understanding the factors behind financial success in a dynamic setting based on the concept of increasing returns. This is applied to telecentres according to the stage of maturity of their information services. The framework is illustrated with literature- and interview-based cases, and will help an understanding of ways in which telecentres can scale-up …
Towards An Integrated Theory Of Intellectual Property, Gideon Parchomovsky, Peter Siegelman
Towards An Integrated Theory Of Intellectual Property, Gideon Parchomovsky, Peter Siegelman
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses a curious gap in the theory of intellectual property. One of the central dogmas in both the legal and economic literatures is that patents, copyrights and trademarks constitute separate forms of protection, each serving different purposes and designed to operate independently of the others. By challenging this dogma, however, this Article shows that certain combinations of intellectual property protection give rise to important synergies. When a patentee can develop brand loyalty among its customers, the existence of trademark protection allows her to extend its protection even after her patent expires, and thereby earn higher profits than would …

Employment Effects Of Product And Process Innovations In Europe, Mario Pianta, Tommaso Antonucci
Employment Effects Of Product And Process Innovations In Europe, Mario Pianta, Tommaso Antonucci
Mario Pianta
This paper develops a model of the employment impact of innovation considering, on the one hand, the interactions with demand and labour costs and, on the other, the variety of patterns of technological change. Different technological strategies are considered. First, a search for technological competitiveness is based on product innovation and productivity rooted in quality advantages; second a strategy of active price competitiveness has productivity growth rooted in process innovation-based restructuring; third a passive price competitiveness strategy is pursued by noninnovators relying on cost-cutting. The new European innovation database drawn from the Community Innovation Survey 1994-96, merged with structural and …
