Will Blockchain Really Impact Your Business Model? Empirical Evidence From Slovenian Smes, Horst Treiblmaier, Žan Špan

Economic and Business Review

In this paper, we use the widely popular business model canvas, which was previously adapted for the blockchain environment, to assess the experiences and perceptions of Slovenian small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) pertaining to blockchain technologies. The results reveal that SMEs expect applications built on blockchain technologies to have a highly positive effect on numerous aspects of their business model. This positive evaluation is even stronger among companies that already have experience with blockchain technologies.

The Next Frontier: The Arbitrability Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Daniel Hofilena Jun 2022

The Next Frontier: The Arbitrability Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Daniel Hofilena

Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation

Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are private rights and are only as strong as the means to enforce them. In this light, arbitration has been an increasingly attractive alternative for parties to resolve their disputes due to its efficiency, specialty, confidentiality, and deference to party autonomy. Arbitral awards can likewise be enforced across jurisdictions that are signatories to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. However, the capability of parties to submit IPR matters to arbitration is sometimes limited by the State under its laws. This study will explore possible solutions to the arbitrability of …

A Sound Vote: Integrity, Music Copyright, And Politics In The Philippines, Mark Robert Dy Jun 2022

A Sound Vote: Integrity, Music Copyright, And Politics In The Philippines, Mark Robert Dy

Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation

This research aims to determine whether the moral right of integrity may be invoked by composers or performers to prevent the use of their music for political campaigning. Protecting the integrity of a work does not only mean keeping a work unchanged but also includes preventing its use in an undesirable context. Under ordinary circumstances, a license from the music publisher or agent would be enough permission to play or perform music publicly. However, political campaigns are uniquely complicated situations because permitting the use of one’s music might be perceived as support for a political candidate, party, or ideology. The …

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about numerous consequences upon the global community, whether socially or economically. The education sector has not been isolated from the effects of the pandemic, having to largely suspend face-to-face classes, its traditional approach to learning, in favor of alternative modalities in teaching. To ensure learning continuity despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the Department of Education - Philippines promulgated a series of DepEd Orders directing public and private schools to adopt alternative methods of learning such as online distance learning and the preparation of Self Learning Modules. The resort to the different learning modalities …

Business And/Or Ethics? A Framework For Resolving Multicriteria Decision Dilemmas, E. Susanna Cahn May 2022

Business And/Or Ethics? A Framework For Resolving Multicriteria Decision Dilemmas, E. Susanna Cahn

Communications of the IIMA

Corporate leadership is often in the unenviable position of balancing ethical choices and profit. Business decisions consider alternatives and make choices to further strategic business goals. Measures of business success are likely to be financial, including profit, revenue, sales, market share, cost of production, quality of products, innovative product development. Ethical decisions are choices among right and wrong outcomes or processes. Assessment of ethical choices may or may not be easily quantified, including consideration of positive and negative consequences, moral principles, and fair process. Inevitably, then, the inherent nature of business-ethics decisions will involve multiple decision criteria, including both business …

Fintech And Anti-Money Laundering Regulation: Implementing An International Regulatory Hierarchy Premised On Financial Innovation, Nicholas A Roide

Texas A&M Law Review

Innovations in financial technology (“fintech”) have rippling effects across global markets. Fintech firms utilizing virtual assets and disintermediating blockchain technology continue to rapidly grow in strength and number. As systemic risk mounts due to the inter-jurisdictional nature of fintech, antimony laundering (“AML”) regulators must search for an international answer to maintain global financial stability and protect consumers against illicit activities. A variety of solutions have appeared within local AML regulatory frameworks. These frameworks tend to function as a hierarchy with three ordered objectives: market integrity, rule clarity, and innovation. However, frameworks often place too much emphasis on market integrity and …

Evaluation Approach For An Effective Blockchain Implementation In An Accounting Environment, Angel R. Otero, Ryan P. Fink

Communications of the IIMA

Blockchain has the potential to revolutionize accounting transactions in the same way the Internet revolutionized the collection and dissemination of information. Nonetheless, like the Internet, blockchain technology is a double-edged sword offering tremendous benefits but also drawbacks. The literature points to inadequacies in blockchain implementations, particularly when evaluating and selecting controls to help ensure an effective blockchain implementation in organizations. This research develops an approach that not only addresses the inadequacies identified in the literature, but also prompts organizations to a more precise evaluation and selection of controls to achieve effective blockchain implementation. The approach uses Desirability Functions to quantify …

Emerging Technology Trends In Hospitality And Tourism, Harry Costin, Antonio Eslava Feb 2022

Emerging Technology Trends In Hospitality And Tourism, Harry Costin, Antonio Eslava

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

This chapter explores how technology has radically reshaped the tourism industry in the last few decades. In particular, IT applications such as the internet since the 1990s, and more recently smartphone Apps, have contributed to that change. Today, travelers and tourists use the internet to explore the many options available to them in terms of transport, lodging and entertainment at popular tourist destinations. Therefore, many local brick and mortar agencies have disappeared and have been replaced by large, platform-based players such as Expedia, AirBnB or Booking.com. The many pictures they upload constantly while traveling, and the feedback collected immediately after …

Experimental Study To Assess The Impact Of Timers On User Susceptibility To Phishing Attacks, Amy E. Antonucci, Yair Levy, Laurie P. Dringus, Martha Snyder

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Social engineering costs organizations billions of dollars. It exploits the weakest link of information systems security, the users. It is well-documented in literature that users continue to click on phishing emails costing them and their employers significant monetary resources and data loss. Training does not appear to mitigate the effects of phishing much; other solutions are warranted. Kahneman introduced the concepts of System-One and System-Two thinking. System-One is a quick, instinctual decision-making process, while System-Two is a process by which humans use a slow, logical, and is easily disrupted. The key aim of our experimental field study was to investigate …

Subject Matter Experts’ Feedback On Experimental Procedures To Measure User’S Judgment Errors In Social Engineering Attacks, Tommy Pollock, Yair Levy, Wei Li, Ajoy Kumar

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Distracted users can fail to correctly distinguish the differences between legitimate and malicious emails or search engine results. Mobile phone users can have a more challenging time identifying malicious content due to the smaller screen size and the limited security features in mobile phone applications. Thus, the main goal of this research study was to design, develop, and validate a set of field experiments to assess user’s judgment when exposed to two types of simulated social engineering attacks: phishing and Potentially Malicious Search Engine Results (PMSER), based on the interaction of the environment (distracting vs. non-distracting) and type of device …

The 2020 Twitter Hack – So Many Lessons To Be Learned, Paul D. Witman, Scott Mackelprang

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

In mid-July 2020, the social media site Twitter had over 100 of its most prominent user accounts start to tweet requests to send Bitcoin to specified Bitcoin wallets. The requests promised that the Bitcoin senders would receive their money back doubled, as a gesture of charity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The attack appears to have been carried out by a small group of hackers, leveraging social engineering to get access to internal Twitter support tools. These tools allowed the hackers to gain full control of the high-profile user accounts and post messages on their behalf. The attack provides many paths …

Redefining Banking Through Defi: A New Proposal For Free Banking Based On Blockchain Technology And Defi 2.0 Model, Francesco Spinoglio

Journal of New Finance

This article aims to offer a new free banking proposal with a 100% cash ratio that uses the DeFi 2.0 model. The current monetary system, based on Central Banking with fractional reserve, has created a huge debt spiral and has distorted the entire production system, which produces deep recurring socioeconomic crises that increasingly impoverish citizens. This paper presents an innovative proposal that aims to take advantage of blockchain technology using the Defi 2.0 model. It would be a first attempt to merge centralized finance with the DeFi world, laying the foundation for a fairer and more decentralized monetary society.

Pandemic As Panacea: The Positive Long-Term Impact Of Forced Innovation In The Legal Industry, J. Mark Phillips

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Despite the untold disruption the COVID-19 pandemic continues to inflict upon the legal industry, several positive outcomes may ultimately emerge. These unexpected gains may not only improve the practice of law but also address long-standing weaknesses in the industry. In this article, I utilize Roger’s Innovation Diffusion model to shed preliminary light on the unprecedented phenomenon of forced, comprehensive, and immediate adoption of new technology throughout the legal industry. While doing so, I highlight the way this sudden adoption will likely change perceptions regarding perennial areas of tension, such as mental health and work-life balance. Finally, I argue that the …
