Service businesses record the number of visitors as a measure of the performance of their business. However, summarized observations such as the total number of visits per month provide little insight on individual-level visiting behavior. In addition, behavior may change over time, especially in a swiftly changing environment induced by mobile promotions. This paper presents an individual level model for shop visiting behavior based on data of a beauty salon. Within this paper we consider our results of using the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) over a period of 18 months to distribute our working papers to the research community. Our experiences have been quite positive, with SSRN serving as a platform both to inform our colleagues about our research as well as inform us about related research (through email and telephoned conversations of colleagues who discovered our paper on SSRN). Towards Self-Organizing, Smart Business Networks: Let’S Create ‘Life’ From Inert Information, David Bray, Benn Konsynski

We review three different theories that can inform how researchers can determine the performance of smart business networks, to include: (1) the Theory of Evolution, (2) the Knowledge-Based Theory of the Firm, and (3) research insights into computers and cognition. We suggest that each of these theories demonstrate that to be generally perceived as smart, an organism needs to be self-organizing, communicative, and tool-making. Consequentially, to determine the performance of a smart business network, we suggest that researchers need to determine the degree to which it is self-organizing, communicative, and tool-making. This chapter introduces the role of the knowledge gatekeeper as a mechanism by which knowledge is created and transferred in a networked environment. Knowledge creation and transfer are essential for building a knowledge based economy. The chapter considers obstacles that inhibit this process and argues that leading firms create a shared socio-cultural context that enables the condivision of tacit meanings and codification of knowledge. RFID-, Sensor- und Lokalisierungstechnologien werden die Abläufe im Facility Management künftig stark verändern. Angesichts der hohen Kosten des Vorort-Einsatzes eines Mitarbeiters und der verteilten Standorte von Immobilien bieten diese Technologien Immobilienbetreibern die Chance, ihre Kostenstrukturen durch hoch integrierte Abläufe zu optimieren und sich im Wettbewerb durch Zusatzleistungen zu differenzieren. Die Integration mobiler und ubiquitärer Technologien in bestehende Systemlandschaften erfordert jedoch die Implementierung zusätzlicher Infrastrukturkomponenten und Schnittstellen. The lack of an agreed upon definition of information system is one of many obstacles troubling the academic information systems discipline. After listing a number of definitions of IS, this paper defines information system as a special case of work system as defined in Alter (1999a). This definition has many desirable characteristics: It is easy to understand; differentiates IS from IT; covers totally manual, partially automated, and totally automated information systems; links to a life cycle model that generates many insights about development and implementation problems; provides a simple guideline that helps in interpreting common IS/IT jargon; and has other …

Service systems produce all services of significance and scope, yet the concept of service system is not well articulated in the service literature. This paper presents three interrelated frameworks as a first cut at the fundamentals of service systems. These frameworks identify basic building blocks and organize important attributes and change processes that apply across all service systems. Although relevant regardless of whether a service system uses IT, the frameworks are also potentially useful in visualizing the realities of moving toward automated service architectures. This paper describes a new knowledge acquisition method using a generic design environment where context-sensitive knowledge is used to build specific DSS for rural business. Although standard knowledge acquisition methods have been applied in rural business applications, uptake remains low and familiar weaknesses such as obsolescence and brittleness apply. Abgestimmte Produktstammdaten bilden die Grundlage elektronischer Geschäftsbeziehungen zwischen Handels- und Industrieunternehmen. Obwohl Handel und Industrie sich schon vergleichsweise lange mit dem elektronischen Austausch von Produktdaten beschäftigen, konnten sich weder der EDI-basierte, bilaterale Stammdatenaustausch noch der multilaterale Ansatz über Datenpools durchsetzen. Seit Mitte 2004 verfolgt das Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) einen neuen Lösungsansatz, mit dem Ziel, einen m:n-fähigen elektronischen Produktstammdatenaustausch zu etablieren. Die Ankündigungen von führenden Handelsunternehmen wie WALMART, AHOLD oder TESCO sowie Konsumgüterherstellern wie NESTLÉ, PROCTER GAMBLE oder KRAFT FOODS schüren ebenso wiedie aktuelle Konsolidierung unter den Stammdatenpools die Erwartungen. This paper explores how assigning software developers the identity of “engineers” metes out specific assumptions about IT projects. To this end, the paper describes an alternative metaphor of programming as art, which is commonly used by the programmers interviewed. In addition, the discussion draws conclusions from the discrepancies between the two views as well as from the proposed metaphor, explaining organizational reluctance to aesthetical vocabulary. This paper discusses occupational identity—emphasizing the identity of programmers—using qualitative research methods. As such, it enriches the literature currently available on this profession.

This paper describes and analyses clinicians’ assessments of workplace privacy and security (PaS) training in the context of contemporary health information system (HIS) practice. The PaS training underpins national e-health frameworks. The paper draws on findings from a forthcoming dissertation. The ‘questerview’ technique was applied to this case study of 26 clinicians in three Victorian (Australia) public hospitals. The technique relies on data collection that applies standardised questions and questionnaires during interviews. Respondents were recorded while they completed the standardised questions and questionnaires and were encouraged to discuss their responses to items in detail. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zwięzłe opisanie metody Action Research w teorii organizacji i zarządzania. Poprzez przybliżenie założeń, aksjomatów, celów i his-torii AR, tekst umożliwia zrozumienie filozofii tego podejścia. AR jest pokazane jako metoda umożliwiająca połączenie dwóch pozornie rozłącznych sposobów uprawiania pracy naukowej: podejścia praktycznego, nastawionego na rozwią-zywanie realnych problemów świata (czasami uznawanego za nienaukowe i nad-miernie przyziemne) z podejściem teoretycznym, nastawionym przede wszyst-kim na tworzenie abstrakcyjnych modeli i analiz umożliwiających generalizacje (czasami uznawanym za niepraktyczne i nadmiernie oderwane od realiów). Na podstawie akademickiego i biznesowego doświadczenia autorów AR jest przedsta-wiony jako atrakcyjny, spójny sposób uprawiania pracy badawczej i konsultingu.
