Hidden Subsidies And The Public Ownership Of Sports Facilities: The Case Of Levi’S Stadium In Santa Clara, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson, Debra O'Connor Aug 2017

Hidden Subsidies And The Public Ownership Of Sports Facilities: The Case Of Levi’S Stadium In Santa Clara, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson, Debra O'Connor

Economics Department Working Papers

Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California is an example of a private financing / public ownership arrangement. While the stadium’s construction resulted in no direct tax increases, this ownership arrangement allows the San Francisco 49ers to avoid many types of taxes on the income generated from Levi’s Stadium. We estimate the total tax savings to the 49ers at between $106 and $213 million over the first 20 years of Levi’s Stadium compared with a privately financed and owned option. We argue that tax savings inherent in private financing / public ownership arrangements represent indirect and hidden subsidies.

America's Tax System And How To Fix It, Brendan O. Smith Apr 2016

America's Tax System And How To Fix It, Brendan O. Smith

Senior Honors Theses

Abraham Lincoln signed into law the first national income tax on August 5, 1861. Since 1913, the content of the Internal Revenue Code has increased from the 27-page tax law of that year to over 5000 pages today. As time has passed and the length of this document has increased, so has the expense and complexity of abiding by its statutes. The inefficiencies of the current system indicate that something must be done about the United States tax system, but no one has agreed on what to do. Many proposals to correct the problem have been brought forward over the …

Sub S Valuation: To Tax Effect, Or Not To Tax Effect, Is Not Really The Question, Glen M. Vogel Jan 2012

Sub S Valuation: To Tax Effect, Or Not To Tax Effect, Is Not Really The Question, Glen M. Vogel

Glen M Vogel

There were approximately 4 million Subchapter S corporations in 2008, with around 7 million shareholders. Because these companies are not publicly traded, their valuation in estate tax matters, divorces, shareholder disputes and other cases can present difficult issues for courts. In particular, the impact on the valuation of these companies of their “pass-through” tax status has been controversial since 1999, with different courts adopting different solutions. This article explains the nature of the issue, and presents a financial model for understanding the differential impact of taxes on the values of S and C corporations. The paper analyzes key court decisions …

Pcaob Inspections: Perceptions Of Triennial Firms With No-Deficiency Inspections, Bernard H. Newman, Mary Ellen Oliverio Aug 2009

Pcaob Inspections: Perceptions Of Triennial Firms With No-Deficiency Inspections, Bernard H. Newman, Mary Ellen Oliverio

Faculty Working Papers

The drive to enhance audit quality after the cascade of audit failures in the final decades of the last century and first two years of the new century resulted in a new structure for the oversight of public accounting firms. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) was established with the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This Board was given the authority to inspect all public accounting firms who provide audits to publicly-owned companies reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Such public accounting firms were required to register with the PCAOB. Accounting firms who audit more than …

Early Evidence Of The Volatility Of Comprehensive Income And Its Components, Timothy L. Mccoy, James H. Thompson, Margaret A. Hoskins

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

The Financial Accounting Standards Board issued Statement of Financial Accounting Standard (SFAS) No. 130 Reporting Comprehensive Income, in June 1997, effective for fiscal periods beginning after December 15, 1997. Early trends in reporting comprehensive income and its components for the Fortune 500 reveal an overwhelming preference for disclosure in the statement of changes in stockholders' equity, despite the FASB's recommendation of utilizing a combined statement of income/comprehensive income or a separate statement of comprehensive income. This disclosure tends to downplay the importance of other comprehensive income items and focus readers' attention on the traditional net income figure rather than comprehensive …

An Analysis Of Restatements Due To Errors And Auditor Changes By Fortune 500 Companies, James H. Thompson, Timothy L. Mccoy

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Events leading to the breakup of Arthur Anderson and Co. included the failure of Enron and other evidence of financial reporting irregularities. Many of these irregularities involved restatement of financial statements due to error. During the last several years, numerous articles in the accounting literature and accounting press have chronicled such restatements and the often associated change in auditor. This paper analyzes restatements due to error and auditor changes made by Fortune 500 companies during 2001 and 2002 in order to assess whether restatements due to error lowered or raised income and whether companies with income-decreasing errors showed a greater …
