Methods For Retaining And Monetizing Local Audiences Of An Online-Only News Organization, Lauren Rabaino

Journalism

Newspapers are at a crossroads in their existence. Traditionally, the printed giants were able to hold monopolies in their respective municipalities because the barrier to entry for printing was high and the operating costs were expensive. A study published in 1978 – a decade before the Internet came to fruition – reported that local newspaper monopolies existed in more than 97 percent of U.S. cities . But with the Web, that dynamic has vastly shifted. Widely accessible and affordable Web platforms eliminate both the barrier to entry and operating costs required to publish to a mass audience. As a result, …

What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher

Technical Services Department Faculty Publications

In the final vision session of the 2009 NASIG Annual Conference, Geoffrey Bilder from CrossRef discussed the problem of how to identify trustworthy scholarly information on the Internet. This problem is exacerbated by readers’ growing distrust of intermediaries such as publishers and librarians, by the fact that the Internet lacks the traditions that have developed in scholarly communication to ensure trust, and by the sheer amount of information now readily available. Paratext is understood as anything outside of a text that sets expectations about that text. In the past, paratext, for example a publisher logo, provided important clues as to …

Business Plan For Sleep Center, Mohammed Al Ghamdi

Boise State Graduate Student Projects

A sleep disorder is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person, and it is serious enough to affect normal physical, mental, and emotional function. Most sleep disorders can be diagnosed in a sleep center through the use of a common test known as the polysomnogram. The wide need of sleep medicine and the severe shortage of centers and technologists impact our understanding of sleep disorders, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Currently, several health service organizations have started to focus on the need to study the function of sleep, to understand and develop better treatments for …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One of the most important components of any business is the ability to effectively market the organization. Marketing is critical in shaping the public's knowledge of services offered and how an organization distinguishes itself from other organizations within a community. This type of recognition ultimately affects an organization's sustainability. To effectively conduct outreach and create an effective marketing strategy nonprofit organizations are increasingly becoming reliant on volunteers to meet these missions. With nonprofit organizations taking on larger caseloads with limited staff, organizations are becoming more reliant on volunteers, which include the Board of Directors, to assist in marketing and fundraising. …

College of Business Faculty Publications

As important sources that shape institutional structures in an economy, professional and trade associations play significant roles in bringing and legitimating institutional changes. This paper examines the roles of professional and trade associations' impacts on institutions associated with a nascent and formative sector of a developing economy. In empirical terms, the paper offers an in-depth case study of India's National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) on institutional changes related to the offshoring industry. The NASSCOM case shows that under appropriate conditions, professional and trade associations represent an alternative to the state in shaping the industry landscape.

The Financial Performance Of Two Singapore Boutique Hotels: A Comparative Analysis, Kah Seng Fong Jun 2009

The Financial Performance Of Two Singapore Boutique Hotels: A Comparative Analysis, Kah Seng Fong

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

During the decades when business and international travel expanded, the leading hotels began to set typical formats for their room layouts and décor, their restaurants, and their related services. For example, everyone recognizes that successive corporate decision-makers in hotels like Starwood, Hyatt, and Marriott converted their individual properties so each looked and acted like the others. Part of the motivation toward standardization was intended to comfort the traveler who then could depend on the expected quality no matter where the hotel was located.

Assessing The Effectiveness Of E-Recruitment Efforts In State Government, Joseph Orenstein

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This study provides an evaluative framework for state e-recruitment efforts. Challenged bv the impending retirement of the baby boomer generation, public employers are implementing innovative hiring practices to aid in the recruitment of a new, talented workforce. Web-based recruitment offers an opportunity for state recruiters to reach a broader pool of job seeker talent. An effective framework for assessing the adequacy of state hiring websites would establish a set of criteria to aid in the development and implementation of state e-recruitment efforts. The framework is based on a literature review of relevant recruitment strategies in the public and private sector, …

Ultra Lightweight Web Applications: A Single-Page Wiki Employing A Partial Ajax Solution, Michael J. Rees

The overloaded term Web 2.0 web site usually connotes an interactive web application that offers features normally associated with free-standing applications running directly under the control of an operating system. Such an interactive web applications, also known as a rich internet application (RIA), run within web browsers and must download XHTML and client-side scripts to control user interactivity. Via a variety of technologies the web server must provide a storage mechanism to support the RIA and the presentation of dynamic data in the browser interface. Such storage may be of large volume and bring concomitant bandwidth, response and server storage …

Although I had been accepted into the doctoral programs at several universities, including UCLA and the University of Washington, I chose MSU because of its strong reputation in International Marketing, and its emphasis on managerial applications. Tamer Cavusgil had recently joined the MSU faculty and had just initiated the Center for International Business Education and Research. I wanted to learn from him as my mentor and dissertation chair, and was encouraged by the potential resources available through the CIBER to do international research. This …

The Impact Of A Computer Proficiency Exam On Business Students' Admission To And Performance In A Higher-Level It Course, Patrick Rondeau, Li Xiaolin

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Many colleges of business now assume incoming freshmen arrive on campus possessing high levels of computer skill and ability. Students are frequently offered the opportunity to take and pass a computer proficiency exam (CPE) in lieu of a freshman information technology (IT) course. While promoted as an efficient alternative, our analysis of the implementation of a CPE as a replacement for the freshman IT course at a small, Midwestern university revealed mixed results. As expected, we found those students who took and passed the CPE generally scored higher in their follow-on, sophomore IT course than those who passed the prerequisite, …
