An Organization's Responsibility To Its Employees, Susan R. Madsen Dec 2000

An Organization's Responsibility To Its Employees, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Defining and deciding the responsibility of business organizations to provide and assist employees with work-family programs and initiatives is a current critical issue that has ignited controversy during the past decade. The author argues that work-family programs should be a part of every organization and should be linked to benefits to the employer. She argues that training and educating business leaders about work-family options and benefits is a better solution than continual legislation. Discussions include organizational responsibility, the increased need for these programs, work-family programs and services, benefits and suggestions for the employer, and finding a solution through shared responsibility.

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper focuses on a radical change, in which organizations abandon an institutionalized template for arranging their core activities, that is likely to occur in organizational fields that have strong, local market forces and strong but heterogeneous institutional forces. We examine the role of market forces and heterogeneous institutional elements in promoting divergent change in core activities among all U.S. rural hospitals from 1984 to 1991. Results support the view that divergent change depends on both market forces (proximity to competitors, disadvantages in service mix) and institutional forces (state regulation, ownership and governance norms, and mimicry of models of divergent …

Privatization In Emerging Economies: An Agency Theory Perspective, Bavi Dharwadkar, Gerard George, Pamela Brandes Jul 2000

Privatization In Emerging Economies: An Agency Theory Perspective, Bavi Dharwadkar, Gerard George, Pamela Brandes

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ineffectiveness of several privatized firms within emerging economies underscores the importance of agency theory issues and their impact on the privatization-performance relationship. The authors argue that weak governance and limited protection of minority shareholders intensify traditional principal-agent problems (perquisite consumption and entrenchment) and create unique agency problems (expropriation). The authors suggest that postprivatization performance can be enhanced by using appropriate ownership, management, and corporate structures that mitigate agency problems in the context of weak governance, and they highlight avenues for research.

A Model Of Relational Leadership: The Integration Of Trust And Leader-Member Exchange, Holly H. Brower, F. David Schoorman, Hwee Hoon Tan Jun 2000

A Model Of Relational Leadership: The Integration Of Trust And Leader-Member Exchange, Holly H. Brower, F. David Schoorman, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article presents a model of relational leadership based on a review of leader-member exchange (LMX) and interpersonal trust. This model asserts that the LMX relationship is built through interpersonal exchanges in which parties to the relationship evaluate the ability, benevolence, and integrity of each other. These perceptions, in turn, influence the behaviors predicted by LMX researchers. This integrated model of relational leadership provides insights into the dynamics of leader-subordinate relationships and resolves some of the inconsistencies in the LMX research without losing the richness and uniqueness of the exchange theory. A number of propositions for future research in relational …

Toward The Differentiation Of Trust In Supervisor And Trust In Organization, Hwee Hoon Tan, Christy S. F. Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Trust in supervisor and trust in organization are argued to be distinct but related constructs, each with its own set of antecedents and outcomes. Empirical field results supported the proposition. Although trust in supervisor and trust in organization were positively and significantly correlated, trust in supervisor was more strongly associated with proximal variables (ability, benevolence, and integrity of supervisor), whereas trust in organization was more strongly correlated with global variables (perceived organizational support and justice). This conclusion held despite the inclusion of proximal variables in the regression on trust in organization and the inclusion of global variables in the regression …

An Assessment Of The Links Between International Diversification, Product Diversification, Performance And Risk Within Service Corporations, Sally Ann Sledge

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Services currently account for the dominant share of the workforce in all developed nations and are the fastest growing sector of employment in most developing nations. Services comprise approximately two-thirds of the GDP (gross domestic product) or total domestic output of final goods and services in highly industrialized nations from the OECD (Organization for Cooperation and Development). They make up almost half of the GDP in developing nations. All economic forecasts predict that services will continue to grow and account for the vast majority of future economic expansion throughout the world. Despite these facts, services have been studied infrequently among …

The factors were also analyzed to determine how influential the significant factors were in predicting perceptions of the ethical climate of the …

Application Of The Deming Philosophy To Higher Education, Aaron W. Hughey

Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications

A brief overview of the historical significance of the work of W Edwards Deming, one of the originators of Total Quality Management (TOM), is provided. The essence of the Deming philosophy is that quality must be the pre-eminent consideration in any strategy aimed at long-term success. Within this context, the idea of what constitutes true quality in higher education is discussed followed by an explanation of how Deming's famous '14 points' are as applicable to colleges and universities as they are to business and industry. The author then explains how the '14 points' can be used as a framework for …

Sources Of Work-Family Conflict: A Sino-U.S. Comparison Of The Effects Of Work And Family Demands, Nini Yang, Chao C. Chen, Jaepil Choi, Yimin Zou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Given differences in values about work and family time, it is hypothesized that Americans will experience greater family demand, which will have greater impact on work-family conflict, whereas the Chinese will experience greater work demand, which will have the greater impact on work-family conflict. The results of a survey of working men and women in the 2 countries generally support the hypotheses; however, work demand did not differ significantly between the 2 countries and did not have a greater effect than family demand on work-family conflict in China.

Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor Jan 2000

Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor

Norma Mansor

Leadership behavior significantly influences the performance of companies and the motivation of people. However, much of our knowledge regarding the characteristics of effective leaders is based on research carried out in Western countries. To redress this imbalance, the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Program was set up in the early 1990s to investigate leadership behaviors in over 60 countries around the world, including Malaysia. Much cross-cultural research focuses on identifying differences between cultures. In contrast, the results of the GLOBE research indicate that a number of attributes associated with charismatic/transformational leadership are universally endorsed by all cultures …

Increasingly managers need to distinguish between those oftheir activities and practices that can be successfully transferred acrossnational boundaries and those that will require modification in view ofdivergences between national settings. This can be determined by initiallyidentifying those features of managing organizations that remain similar acrossnational boundaries and those that are different, and then ascertaining thestrength of the forces for convergence or divergence. This article describes anexploratory attempt to conduct a polycentric (in the terms described below)research study of conceptions of human resource management in seven Europeancountries. A Body Of Consensus: The Church As Embodied Organization, Vaughan S. Roberts Dec 1999

A Body Of Consensus: The Church As Embodied Organization, Vaughan S. Roberts

Vaughan S Roberts

This chapter examines how thinking about the nature of embodiment might inform an understanding of how this metaphor is used to describe the Church. It begins by looking at two important metaphorical uses of the body in the New Testament (the Last Supper and the Church as the Body of Christ) and then employs ideas from the writings of Mark Johnson, John O’Neil, Philip A. Mellor and Chris Shilling to see how they could inform theological notions of embodied unity, diversity, contingency and dialectic. It concludes by arguing that the Church is an embodiment of consensus and conflict.
