An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon Jul 1989

An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon

Management And Labor Relations

Tests two major prescriptions of Staw and Ross about the management of escalation behavior in organizations. Since these prescriptions are primarily based on research using students in controlled settings, the efficacy of the prescriptions was tested in the context of a real, functioning organization. The results provide conditional support for separating initial decision responsibility from subsequent responsibility as a means of reducing escalation behavior. However, the findings did not support a reduction of project failure risk as a means of minimizing escalation of commitment to a failing course of action.

Competitive Groups As Cognitive Communities: The Case Of The Scottish Knitwear Manufacturers, Joseph F. Porac, Howard Thomas, Charles Baden-Fuller

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article explores how the mental models of organizational strategists determine perceptions of competing organizations and responses to competitive conditions. We first outline a cognitive perspective for discussing competitive strategy, and then use this framework to analyse the particular case of the Scottish knitwear industry. We show how the structure of that industry both determines and is determined by managerial perceptions of the environment. We conclude by drawing out a few general implications of our framework for research and theory on competitive strategy.

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell Jan 1989

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The contemporary American peace movement is a mixture of many small and a few large organizations pursuing a wide range of goals. There has been almost no organizational research focused on these peace movement organizations (PMOs) or detailed studies of the goals, values, and activities of a large sample of PMOs.

The activity of these varied PMOs has had limited impact on public policy. Some authors cite the strength of external forces or the conservative American political culture as the key factors in this relative lack of success. There are few facts with which to evaluate these or …

Interactive Effects Of Evaluation Style And Organizational Structure Characteristics Of Autonomy And Interdependence On Subunit Managerial Performance, H. Y. Teoh, R. Lam Jan 1989

Interactive Effects Of Evaluation Style And Organizational Structure Characteristics Of Autonomy And Interdependence On Subunit Managerial Performance, H. Y. Teoh, R. Lam

Faculty of Business - Accounting & Finance Working Papers

This study was designed to provide empirical evidence that subunit managerial performance is an interactive function of evaluation style and organization characteristics of autonomy and interdependence. Both autonomy and interdependence are believed crucial to the design of evaluation systems because the accounting literature has suggested that accounting performance measurement is more suitable for independent and autonomous organizational subunits. Subjects were division managers of profit centers and investment centers from large manufacturing companies within the Metropolitan Sydney and Wollongong areas. Collection of data was based on interviews and pretested questionnaire. The statistical analysis involved formulation of two regression equations in which …

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer Jan 1989

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer

Dissertations and Theses

Boyatzis has stated that "true" management competencies are characteristics of a manager which differentiate superior from average and below average performance. Boyatzis, however, treats a manager's self-image (self-concept) as a "threshold" rather than a "real" competency. Lafferty's research, which has measured relationships between several lifestyle (self-concept) variables and corresponding organizational behavior, has found that performance differences between average and high performing managers are associated with differences in self-concept construction. The researcher proposes to treat variations in self-concept measurements from managers as indications of their relative management competency. Thisresearch investigates seventeen hypotheses relating to the self-concepts of high performing, mid-level technical …

Voting Behaviour In Singapore: A Preliminary Investigation From A Multi-Attribute Attitudinal Perspective, S. M. Leong, Chin Tiong Tan, K. C. Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The multi-attribute attitude model is employed to study voter behaviour in Singapore. Specifically, a set of beliefs of the personal attributes of political candidates considered important to voters was examined. Results indicated that such beliefs did predict voters' affective evaluation and intention to vote for a typical political candidate reasonably well. Implications of the findings are discussed and suggestions for future research provided.

Umberto Eco And The "Habit" Of Family Communion, Vaughan S. Roberts

Vaughan S Roberts

This paper was written before the introduction of Common Worship by the Church of England and explores the effects of earlier liturgical changes upon that Church, in particular the move from non-Eucharist forms of worship (such as Mattins and Evensong) to more Eucharistically centred liturgy and argues for affirmation and encouragement of diversity in parish worship.
