Do agency theory-based “good corporate governance” principles indeed apply to China? A straightforward answer to this question is lacking, because evidence is inconclusive across studies. We endeavor to fill this gap by conducting the first meta-analysis on the China literature with two focuses. First, we assess the impact of (i) board independence, (ii) board leadership structure, and (iii) managerial incentives on firm performance, as these elements have been central to both agency theory as well as to Chinese corporate governance reforms. Comparative Empirical Analysis On Computer Software Piracy Behaviors Between China And The United States: An Exploratory Study, Xiang Fang, Sooun Lee

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Using the data collected from several universities in China and the United States, which have drastically different piracy rates, economic development stages, income levels, and national cultures, this study aims to identify which demographic factors affect software piracy significantly. Totally, the dataset includes 600 valid responses. Multivariate data analysis, supported by Multivariate Analysis of Variance and Turkey’s test, reveals that among various factors, country difference and gender most significantly influence software piracy. In addition, this study offers recommendations on how to curb software piracy effectively.

International assignment failures cost an organization roughly 3 to 4 times an expatriate's annual salary with the most expatriate failures cited for work assignments in China. Previous scholarly research identified cultural intelligence (CQ) as being influential to expatriate work outcomes. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationships among a subset of CQ predictor variables and work outcome related dependent variables. Quantitative analysis regarding the relationship between CQ and work outcomes for U.S. nationals working in China does not currently exist in the scholarly research. This study focuses on users' perspectives of m-commerce development in China. The development of m-commerce was measured by the extent of m-commerce businesses adopting business intelligence. This paper aims to investigate if the Chinese economic ties with Sub Saharan Africa serve as a substitute for this existing European-African relationship. Three types of economic activities are studied to determine a possible substitution effect: 1) trade (imports and exports) 2) foreign direct investment (FDI) flows; and 3) development aid from China and the European Union towards six African countries. Because natural resources, especially oil, appear to be a driver for Sino-African trade this study focuses on oil-importing and oil-exporting African countries. The fast growing economy and institutional and economic reforms made the Chinese equity markets the third largest in Asia. This leads to strategies of industrial diversification within Chinese firms. Financial theory suggests that industrial diversification may have advantages in emerging markets, because conglomerates are better able to cope with market imperfections than focused firms. Moreover, diversification through investing in many shares may be costly in imperfect markets. Negative effects of diversification can be found if hubris generates too large take-over premiums or if managers consume perks related to company size. Empirical research and theory development have traditionally focused on Western MNEs. The rise of multinational firms from the emerging markets, particularly MNEs from China has attracted limited empirical research attention. In the current research, I attempt to fill this gap by exploring the entry modes strategies, motivation and government interference when Chinese MNEs go abroad. Early international business theories suggested that firms invest abroad on the basis of possessing certain-firm specific competitive advantages. As China continues its unprecedented economic growth and emergence as a world power, new solutions must be forthcoming to meet the accompanying challenges. We propose a positive approach to Chinese HRM that recognizes, develops and manages the psychological capital (PsyCap) of workers. After providing a brief overview of hope, efficacy, optimism, resilience and overall PsyCap in today’s Chinese context, the results of a follow-up study provide further evidence that the PsyCap of Chinese workers is related to their performance.
