A Process Flow Based Framework For Nurse Demand Estimation To Address Nurse Shortage., Jomon Paul, Leo Macdonald May 2014

A Process Flow Based Framework For Nurse Demand Estimation To Address Nurse Shortage., Jomon Paul, Leo Macdonald

Leo MacDonald

The nursing shortage in the United States poses a serious problem to hospitals, given that nurses provide an indispensable service within the healthcare system. This issue is expected to worsen, especially given the aging population of baby-boomers, which includes those that are part of the nurse workforce. This has resulted in a wide variety of problems, including patient safety issues, inability to detect complications, and potential patient mortality rate increases. Nurse shortage implications go beyond healthcare quality, extending to health economics as well. Inaccurate estimates of the nursing resources required to satisfy patient demand in a hospital environment could make …

Enhanced Adaptive Management: Integrating Decision Analysis, Scenario Analysis And Environmental Modeling For The Everglades, Matteo Convertino, Christy Foran, Jeffrey Keisler, Lynn Scarlett, Andrew Loschiavo, Greg Kiker, Igor Linkov Sep 2013

Enhanced Adaptive Management: Integrating Decision Analysis, Scenario Analysis And Environmental Modeling For The Everglades, Matteo Convertino, Christy Foran, Jeffrey Keisler, Lynn Scarlett, Andrew Loschiavo, Greg Kiker, Igor Linkov

Jeffrey Keisler

We propose to enhance existing adaptive management efforts with a decision-analytical approach that can
guide the initial selection of robust restoration alternative plans and inform the need to adjust these
alternatives in the course of action based on continuously acquired monitoring information and changing
stakeholder values. We demonstrate an application of enhanced adaptive management for a wetland
restoration case study inspired by the Florida Everglades restoration effort. We find that alternatives
designed to reconstruct the pre-drainage flow may have a positive ecological impact, but may also have high
operational costs and only marginally contribute to meeting other objectives such as …

Does The Leader Make A Difference? Relationship Between Executive Leader Personality And Entrepreneurial Firm Performance, Theresa M. Welbourne, Marcie A. Cavanaugh , Timothy A. Judge Sep 2013

Does The Leader Make A Difference? Relationship Between Executive Leader Personality And Entrepreneurial Firm Performance, Theresa M. Welbourne, Marcie A. Cavanaugh , Timothy A. Judge

Theresa M. Welbourne, PhD

The purpose of this study was to expand research on personality and leadership by investigating the relationship between executive leader personality and firm performance. Drawing from research on the five-factor model of personality (the Big Five), executive leader emotional adjustment (low neuroticism) and conscientiousness were hypothesized to be positively related to firm performance. No specific hypotheses were offered for the relationships between the remaining Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience) and firm performance. Using a longitudinal sample of initial public offering (IPO) firms, results indicated that emotional adjustment and extraversion were related to measures of firm …

Gainsharing: A Critical Review And A Future Research Agenda, Theresa Welbourne, Luis Gomez Mejia

Theresa M. Welbourne, PhD

This paper provides a critical review of the extensive literature on gainsharing. It examines the reasons for the fast growth in these programs in recent years and the major prototypes used in the past. Different theoretical formulations making predictions about the behavioral consequences and conditions mediating the success of these programs are discussed and the supporting empirical evidence is examined. The large number of a theoretical case studies and practitioner reports or gainsharing are also summarized and integrated. The article concludes with a suggested research agenda for the future.

The Entrepreneurial Growth Ceiling: Using People And Innovation To Mitigate Risk And Break Through The Growth Ceiling In Initial Public Offerings, Theresa M. Wellbourne, Heidi Neck, G. Dale Meyer Sep 2013

The Entrepreneurial Growth Ceiling: Using People And Innovation To Mitigate Risk And Break Through The Growth Ceiling In Initial Public Offerings, Theresa M. Wellbourne, Heidi Neck, G. Dale Meyer

Theresa M. Welbourne, PhD

Purpose – In this paper the authors aim to introduce a concept that they call the “entrepreneurial growth ceiling” (EGC). They develop arguments that new venture IPOs hit the EGC prior to their IPO, and the ceiling is part of the impetus for going public. The paper argues that proceeds from the IPO will aid firms in breaking through the ceiling if the proceeds are strategically allocated. Design/methodology/approach – The study examines a cohort of firms that went public in the same year. The authors code data from the prospectuses of 366 organizations, including how proceeds were to be spent, …
