Perceptions Of Information And Communications Technology (Ict) For Instructional Delivery At A University: From Technophobic To Technologically Savvy, Desmond Wesley Govender Dr, Lockias Chitanana Mr

The African Journal of Information Systems

Changing academics’ perceptions of information and communications technology (ICT) in developing countries has always been a challenge. A university in Zimbawe has witnessed an about-turn in lecturers’ perceptions and beliefs about technology, from being negative (technophobic) to positive (technologically savvy) users of technology. This paper reports on the interplay of factors that resulted in lecturers’ buy-in to the use of e-learning as a mode of instructional delivery. The study employed actor network theory (ANT) as both a methodological and analytical framework to trace the trajectory of the e-learning programme at this university. The conspicuous actors were followed using questionnaires, participant …

A Research Framework For Collaborative Elearning In An End User Training Context, Saurabh Gupta, Robert P. Bostrom

Saurabh Gupta

The growth in the application of information technology to end-user training (EUT) underscores a fundamental need to understand how these e-learning technologies improve the learning process. Results from the limited EUT studies provide an inconsistent picture of the effects of e-learning technologies. Also, collaborative learning has become one of the most used techniques in American education, yet, we could find only one EUT study on collaborative learning. This paper applies adaptive structuration theory (AST) to the specific area of technology-mediated end-user training. The main focus is on understanding learning, collaboration and technology structures involved, their interactions and appropriation, and their …

Achieving End-User Training Effectiveness Through Web-Based Training Systems: An Empirical Study, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom

Saurabh Gupta

The growth in the application of information technology to learning/training underscores the need to understand the impact of these technologies. This paper reports the results of a multi-period quasi-experiment focusing on two e-learning methods: contemporary web-based and video-based training methods. Drawing on the two foundational disciplines of Information Systems and Education, this study presents a theoretical model, based on Adaptive Structuration Theory, which focuses on the learning process involved in technology-mediated learning. The model describes the effect of learning methods as well as the important role of faithful appropriation of learning methods on learning outcomes. Results of the study show …

Would Students Benefit From Using Ebook Ereaders In Academic Programs?, Saurabh Gupta, Charlene Gullett Scaggs

Saurabh Gupta

As eBook eReaders become more popular for personal use why are they not seen more in academia? In particular, would students benefit from using eBook eReaders in academic program? This paper means to investigate the current academic use of eBooks and eReaders including PC/laptops/netbooks as eReaders. As part of the investigation we conducted a small pilot study of graduate students enrolled in an eBusiness strategy course and reviewed existing research. However, current research is very limited in the area of eBook devices (eReader). This paper proposes a framework to classify and evaluate eBook eReaders, reviews the limited existing research then …

Rapid Development Of Multimedia Instructional Modules For Information Technology Education, Nanda Ganesan Jan 2009

Rapid Development Of Multimedia Instructional Modules For Information Technology Education, Nanda Ganesan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A multifaceted learning model was developed for implementing e-learning in a largely commuter campus. The primary objective of the model was to build a flexible learning environment that combined the learning effectiveness of in-class learning with the flexibility and accessibility of online learning. One of the components of the model was the multimedia instructional modules produced to teach various Information Technology courses. Several different types of modules were produced representing chalk-and-talk type of lectures, PowerPoint presentations and software tutorials. The chalk-and-talk type of lecture modules and the software tutorials that emulated the in-class learning experience contributed positively towards enhancing the …

Detailed Online Quizzes: Facilitating Holistic, Integrated Learning Experience In Operations Management, Rahul Kale, Saurabh Gupta, Paul Fadil

Saurabh Gupta

Curriculum research in business schools points out that operations management (OM) is one of the more challenging courses to teach. Instructors have always struggled to enhance the student learning experience in OM courses. This article illustrates the development and utilisation of detailed online quizzes in a core OM undergraduate course and demonstrates its potential to achieve higher levels of student learning by mapping the quiz questions to the Bloom's taxonomy. The authors' argue that such quizzes lead to enhanced student performance and a more fulfilling course experience. To substantiate this position, the results of a quasi-experiment which test student perceptions …

The Influence Of Culture And Demography On Classroom Participation: Integrating Technology Into The Pedagogical Paradigm, Saurabh Gupta, Paul Fadil, Rahul Kale

Saurabh Gupta

This paper explores how technology can overcome the negative influences of cultural and demographical differences on classroom participation. The authors propose a theoretically-based, pedagogical paradigm which illustrates how barriers erected by cultural and demographic differences in the classroom can be overcome by utilizing advanced information technology. Finally the influences of classroom participation on various learning objectives are reviewed, propositions are derived from the model, and future research directions are discussed.

Examining The Influence Of Strategic Online Content Delivery, Paul Fadil, Saurabh Gupta, Rahul Kale

Saurabh Gupta

This article describes the development and strategic application of online quizzes to enhance student performance and overall course experience. Although research has increased in the field of technological delivery of educational content, there is yet a dearth of studies when compared to the quantity of activity in practice. The experimental situation that this study presents is generalizable to any regional, public business school with no major in operations management. These schools tend to use operations management as an integral part of its core curriculum. Students are required to take only one required operations course in their program; thus, it becomes …
