Management Style Of Chinese Business Owners In The Chiang Rai Province Of Thailand, John Walsh, Sittichai Anantarangsi

The South East Asian Journal of Management

New challenges face Thailand's economy as it exits the factory age and struggles towards higher value-added economic activities. One important component of new economic development will be encouraging more foreign investment, particularly in the provinces of the country away from Bangkok. China is becoming an increasingly important investment and trade partner for Thailand and the creation of an industrial estate in the northern province of Chiang Rai is in part intended to encourage additional Chinese investment in the country. However, providing space alone is insufficient to understand the need of investors, including their current and future demand for skilled labour. …

The Typology Of Conflict Management Style, Julian Ming-Sung Cheng, Bayu Sutikno

The South East Asian Journal of Management

This paper proposes a triple model of typology of conflict management style, which incorporates three factors: (1) interaction concerns (cooperation versus competitiveness), (2) individualistic versus collectivistic cultures, and (3) environmental uncertainty (stable versus dynamic). The objectives are achieved by reviewing literature on the typology of conflict management style from the working of Blake and Mouton's (1964) model to Freeman and Browne's (2004) model. The findings highlight the triple model of typology of the conflict management style. It is based on an internal factor (interaction concerns between actors, cooperation versus competitiveness) and two external factors, such as cultural dimension (individualism-collectivism) and …

Industrial Diversification And Shareholders' Value In China: The Case Of Shanghai Listed Manucfaturing Firms, Henk Von Eije, Jiong Jin Apr 2009

Industrial Diversification And Shareholders' Value In China: The Case Of Shanghai Listed Manucfaturing Firms, Henk Von Eije, Jiong Jin

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The fast growing economy and institutional and economic reforms made the Chinese equity markets the third largest in Asia. This leads to strategies of industrial diversification within Chinese firms. Financial theory suggests that industrial diversification may have advantages in emerging markets, because conglomerates are better able to cope with market imperfections than focused firms. Moreover, diversification through investing in many shares may be costly in imperfect markets. Negative effects of diversification can be found if hubris generates too large take-over premiums or if managers consume perks related to company size. Also, tunneling and propping may reduce company value. We show …

Machine Translation In A Multilingual Electronic Meeting, Milam Aiken, Mina Park Jan 2009

Machine Translation In A Multilingual Electronic Meeting, Milam Aiken, Mina Park

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Electronic meetings can be more efficient and effective than traditional, oral discussions, but until only recently, groups with no common language could not benefit from machine translation. Although it is possible for linguists or other staff members using machines to translate comments during a multilingual discussion, the research presented here shows that this is not feasible for large groups speaking many languages. As a solution, we propose a fully automated multilingual meeting system, and an example of its use in a meeting with Chinese, Korean, and English comments shows its potential to reduce multinational communication barriers.

Usability Investigation Of E-Business Web-Based Forms, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan, Betsy Page Sigman Jan 2009

Usability Investigation Of E-Business Web-Based Forms, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan, Betsy Page Sigman

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Usability on Web sites is critical because almost no training is provided for users on commercial sites. Instead, Web design relies on standards and consistency across sites. Traditional usability results indicated that computer forms should follow paper-based forms. Yet, Web paradigms have evolved that are quite different from paper-based forms. Specifically, this study reveals that users commit fewer errors and prefer simple forms limited to a single concept per screen. This conclusion significantly alters the recommendations for designing business forms.

The Moderating Effects Of Technology On Career Success: Can Social Networks Shatter The Glass Ceiling?, Paul Fadil, Cindi Smatt, Sharon L. Segrest, Crystal Owen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper reviews the demographic predictors of career success and proposes that technology plays a critical role in alleviating career success barriers for various demographic groups who have historically encountered barriers. Specifically we propose that technology can act as a moderator allowing minority groups greater participation and acceptance in networks. And, ultimately the greater participation and acceptance in networks will lead to greater career success for groups who have typically encountered “glass ceilings” based on demographic variables such as gender, age, race and ethnicity.

Inference-Guiding On Bayesian Knowledge-Based Systems, Jinchang Wang Jan 2009

Inference-Guiding On Bayesian Knowledge-Based Systems, Jinchang Wang

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Bayesian network is a robust structure for representing knowledge containing uncertainties in a knowledge-based system. In applications of expert systems and knowledge-based systems, it often happens that initial data are not sufficient to derive a conclusion of high enough certainty. Inference-guiding is in that case to identify the missing information, pursue its value, and lead inference to a conclusion. This paper presents and characterizes a criterion for effectively selecting key missing information, and thereby develops a “smart” inference approach with the inference-guiding function based on the newly developed criterion for uncertain inference in a Bayesian knowledge-based system.

Using Computer Resources For Personal Activities At Work: Employee Perceptions Of Acceptable Behavior, Troy J. Strader, Lou Ann Simpson, Suzanne R. Clayton Jan 2009

Using Computer Resources For Personal Activities At Work: Employee Perceptions Of Acceptable Behavior, Troy J. Strader, Lou Ann Simpson, Suzanne R. Clayton

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Employees use computer resources at work for personal activities and the implementation of countermeasures has not reduced this behavior. In this study we investigate the extent to which an employee’s ethical orientation and supervisory role have an impact on their perceptions regarding these behaviors. We find that employees assess acceptability using a utilitarian orientation. The more money and time involved in an activity, the more employees perceive them to be unacceptable. We also find that supervisors view these activities as less acceptable than do non-supervisor employees. Demographics have little to do with explaining perceptions. Research and managerial implications are discussed.
